  1. Michael Crawford (in particularly his popular titles) and H.H. Scullard are among my favourite authors. Their work is not particularly groundbreaking, but it is concise
  2. I think you might be a little uptight mate.... just relax a bit! Don't worry; I tend to keep these kinds of neuroses to myself. I used my above post as a means of channelling my anger away from the fact that I lost over half of my 2000 word project
  3. What time is everybody meeting on the Saturday? I can actually come now.
  4. Second-hand bookshops are brilliant; I was able to purchase much of Livy
  5. 1) Noisy eaters - slurping and swallowing are the most repellent noises in existence, as well as casual burping. 2) People whom I barley know - in a lot of instances they are normally people that I only spoke to once at a party - talking to me early in the morning, while on I am on my way to college/work, when I am listening to music. I don't know you, therefore your opinions are meaningless during the god-forsaken hours of the morning! 3) People whom I know speaking to me during the early hours of the morning. I know you, and, in all probability, like you, but this isn't the time for t
  6. During later years, many native Briton volunteered to join other auxillia regiments
  7. Bob Kilgore: I must point out that all of his music is performed on just one guitar.
  8. Boris Johnson - Member of Parliament for Henley, and all round god - BA Classics, Oxford. Hugh Laurie - actor (House, Blackadder, The Young Ones) - BA Archaeology & Anthropology, Cambridge.
  9. The Silures only attacked a detachment of a legion (maybe the XXVV) while they were building a vexillation fortress at Clyro in Powys; they did not 'defeat' an entire legion.
  10. Bah! It is just revisionism for the sake of finacial gain. When were the Silures ever as advanced as their southern brethrens? They did not possess a material culture! And when did the Welsh ever defeat 'a whole Roman legion'?
  11. I have been reading Rodger Syme's The Roman Revolution, and it got me thinking about the various issues raised. Although the principate was a definitive point in Roman History, and World History for that matter, and it changed nearly every aspect of political and social life, I am curious to know if there were any characteristics of the Roman establishment that was not changed by this so-called 'revolution'. Your thoughts?
  12. Bah! I just went back to the land of nod; although this time I was in a Christmas mood.
  13. This morning I got woken up by an ice-cream truck self-interestedly emitting the tune of 'We Wish you a Merry Christmas'
  14. One must keep in mind that British auxillia were a minority in the Roman army; however, there are still a few example of their presence in the military. During the early period of occupation, the evidence for British auxillia is scant. Most of what is known is based on assumption. In the Agricola, for example, Tacitus' Boudica complains about the hardships of the 'levy', and Tacitus himself mentions the 'levy and tribute' imposed on the ruling Britons; Tacitus also places similar woes into the mouth of the freedom fighter Calgacus. The only solid evidence we have for British auxillia during this early period
  15. My PC is not letting me download any images at present
  16. Ok, let's see if you can guess this one: (I am sorry that I could not find a smaller image.)
