spam carving-how very disturbing. Is it problem in the Bavarian community?
  3. What is opinion regarding maritime casualties? The posts seem to hint at a fairly catastrophic results if a unit was rammed , might we assume something similar to U boat crews-ie: survival of most of the crew /virtually total fatalities if defeated ,with little middle ground save perhaps injured marines rather than surviving oarsmen?
  4. The Klimt painting? Yes you wouldnt mess with that Lady .
  5. ok 8.20 AM in Brittania and no recurrence of spam on the "last 10 comments " gallery section. If members are passing by could they possibly just check and log times if anything does appear please?
  6. I am partial to the Caledonii infantry and the Bastaernae falxemen. On the other hand the Equites Alares are impressive.
  7. I think PP might be right on target with a "time activated " spambot so please log times if you see anything weird!
  8. The ongoing work at Vindolanda will probably take centuries to come to fruition, a sobering thought, our own words will be history by then. The blog title is the title of the book by Anthony Birley whose family have devoted themselves to the exploration of the site , he himself was born in the house adjacent to the fort and I was priveliged to meet him, very briefly, recently. The book is an excellent commentary on the Tablets and the great difficulties in retrieval, restoration and interpretation of the evidence. Its very specialised though easy to read, because Birley is totally absorbed in the Roman world and its interpretation. The extreme ordinariness is the great endearing factor of the tablets, the daily grind of provisioning and patrolling ;the flashes of contact between long dead writer and modern reader due to total , banal dullness of normal but wholly undestanderbale events-far more than reading about some deadly siege or warfare, senatorial intrigue or imperial madness . The Batavii are brought to life, Germanic people of fierce pride lead by their own aristocrats as crack Auxilliae, who need beer , bread , shoe repairs, new underwear, bacon, lard, and want loans repaying on time and no funny business from dimwit native trainees who'd better learn to use a pilum fast (or else). The deciphering of the texts is a near miracle exceeded only by their survival. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0...1608667-1014833 and apologies: the msn blog although holding bulk uploads of site visits is still very crude after I demolished it wholesale last year, Pantagathus' excellent TNOG site has my beer blogs http://www.thenectarofgods.com/index.asp read em and weep! and should recieve my herbal beer updates if spring ever arrives here, but my old photography blogs have been consigned to history. If I am able to upload some of my enormous video archive to a server I will certainly link to the Hadrian's Wall footage here. http://spaces.msn.com/Triclinium/PersonalSpace/ dont forget there are multiple romanophile galleries here-use the drop down menu!

  16. just go to -last 10 comments ...and the junk is there to see also, dont delete your pics folks as this just fires the spam onto another set of images-unless the Triumvirate order otherwise.
  17. Everyone please check again-ive just seen a recurrence of spam on the "last 10 comments" in the gallery! Looks like may be hitting the "last 10" regardless of content Pantagathus -some on your pics! and mine. edit: Im going to delete an image affected and see if that gets rid of the junk.. nope it just pushes the spam onto other images... Triumvir please help!
  18. This is very evident when looking at Tacitus on the Brigantes, one can discern grudging praise and terse sentences where an event not to his desired slant is recorded , grudging praise of other active ,high ranking combatants is at least visible. However I dont condem Tacitus -his work is essentialy a panygeric and was understood to be such.
  19. The great difference is the natural material used by our thoughtful ancestors-and a proper appreciation of a decent measure!
  20. I omitted to mention that it was Cartimandua who handed over Caractacus to the Romans, this added to her rather flighty personal life lead her (it is said by Tacitus) "to be hated by the Brigantes on account of her cruelty and lust". Venuntius' rebellion of course happened to occur at the apex of confusion in the Roman world-AD 69 , that of the Four Emperors.
  21. apologies PP , I had to sign off after last pm-I have no further "foreign objects " in my galleries but I urge other members to check "comments" -nothing particularly bad just pointless spam.
  22. I suspect theyd admire some of our technologies (railways, self propelled artillery) scorned others (WCs that have to be flushed) and derided our style (pre-mixed shots , unplucked nostrils, wine boxes). edit: I have come across a vindolanda entry relating to "bottom end " of the social scale in wine drinking , namely expenses for faex or wine-lees as I understand this to mean. These expenses for a cheap drink are included in the various costs of a journey through the province including costs for lodging and fixing damaged wagon axles en route.
  23. http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...&cmd=si&img=666 and here are some oyster picks recovered from Vindolanda-not the best of photos due to the reflective glass.

    Roman Oyster picks

from Vindolanda-perhaps Flavius Cerealis' very own as mentioned in the tablets. Now he had top quality(imported) wine with his seafood as is attested directly in the tablets. So: picks used by a Batavian aristocrat , who styled himself Roman, eating local seafood and wine from Italy very cosmopolitan. The Batavii were a tough outfit , being to a considerable degree responsible for the "up close and personal" gladius work at Mons Graupius.
