  1. Very useful plant..I use it nearly every day therapuetically.
  2. Looking toward the remote and austere site of the marching camp, a location with plentiful water supplies rouglymidway between Bremetenacum and Eboracum

    Salvia officianalis

Buhner (in Sacred Herbal and Healing Beers) has a lot to say about the universality of the Sages and their intimate relationship with Humans throughout all stages of historical development. The Celts would refrain from planting Sage directly, a friend must plant for you to avoid ill luck-I must try to find out how that came about. There is an old saying "why should a man die whilst he has sage in his garden?"
  4. Thank you , good to be back!
  5. Leslie indeed ! Ah thats more like it, hes from round the corner in Batley. Of course hed probably claim to be a "Northerner " as I would.
  6. Salvete Omnes! I am pleased to be able to return to the forum at last. I hope to have new photos from the Luguvallum area next week and from Alavanna (Watercrook) .The Tullie House museum and Carlisle Castle diggings are on my itinerary. edit: The Alavanna to which I refer is not Alavanna Carvetorium (Maryport) it is possibly related to the "lost port" of the Morecambe Estuary , namely that port used by II Adiutrix to combine with IX on its march north to deal with the Brigantine uprising in the southern Lake District,( possibly on the River Kent at Newby Bridge). Alavanna would be the next logical base along the river to secure an inland base with excellent natural defences, ie: surrounded by a wide ox-bow meander. The modern town of Kendal is nearby. It also seems that the slightly later Flavian imperative in this area was to "divide and conquer" keeping the tribes split and off balance , particularly also to keep the Carvetti from harm at the hands of the Brigantines. here is a pocket review of a useful text... http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3722 and.. http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?automo...owentry&eid=255 the alpha-numero Herbal index is undergoing tweaking.
  7. The tiny purpley-blue flowers are the plant in question, a growth of shadey woodland areas. The plant is rich in zinc Rich in flavinoids and rutin (hence the common name), and full of methyl salicylate hence its use for skin problems. more to follow on ancient usage
  8. But what of Olivier? He was from Dorking in Surrey -I think that counts as British
  9. Not the first wave of Celto -mania, the Victorians had a "new age" thing for the celtic fringe.
  10. Patrlineal:Dublin -Viking with a little Welsh ( Brythonic) and french, (but apparently no Irish ) , Matrilineal : Brythonic Brigantine- but perilously close to Marcus Aurelius' Sarmatian plantation at Bremetenacum ( be a nice exotic touch) . So , pick the bones out of that if you can. The simple answer is unassailably British. aside: it amuses me that the three major film stars of post war Britain considered to be the most identifiably British were , Ustinov (Russian /Ethiopian and others) Bogarde (Belgic) and Howard (Hungarian).
  11. now-what you need is the inner bark of the slippery elm (ulmus fulva), any Native American healer will tell you , mixed with a little salt and sugar. If you are feeling tough get some Golden Seal tincture-(Hydrastis Canadiensis), very bitter but a wonderful wild herb.Get well soon.

    Salvia officianalis

..and used by Greek and Roman as a medicinal gargle and if you are caught without deoderant use sage instead!..but I will have more to say.
  13. Sage-one of the many variants. Here we see some tender early growth , the downey softness of the leaves can be seen clearly. This is the herb that , in its variants and developments, has accompanied Man as he journeyed from neolithic to modern. This is Salvia salvatrix -sage the saviour as it was before its duller officianalis tag. Used as an antibacterial since the beginning of recorded history.Sage ale was a primary medieval bevarage and was noted as especially inebriating, not surprising as our old friend thujone is present.Buhner (1998) gives a number of recipes for ale, but be warned the wrong variety can taste dire.Spanish sage is thujone free and greek contains smallish amounts. Contra-indicated in pregnancy because it is an excellent emmemagouge.Strongly antimicrobial. Occurs worldwide but Med is posited as centre of dissemination.
  14. Rameses , this might give you a little background on the Wall in relation to the Flavian conquest http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?showto...t=0entry31368
  15. Post another photo if you can if leaf development improves-then we have another clue.
  16. they are Runuculiae- anemones! very widespread in Europe in many colours, the normally like well drained sandy soil but as long as the soil is well drained and not too sunny they will try to grow -many many species and colours, but yours are particularly vivid! What a wonderful common name you have given them in America.
  17. leaves look geranium like-I shall download and study assiduously.

I suspect some arcane ceremony to placate fierce and bloodthirsty deities of the dank and gloomy German forests
  21. 1. who would win in spambot versus killer cyborg ( apologies thread)?. Spambot vs Caesar is easy , Caesar has no laptop so he wins . 2. seriously: I was hoping to post some map images in the gallery , however as I am using an 8.4 mpix image I find that cut down to "regulation" size all that can be seen are nice lego effect blocks of colour. Is there any way around this at all or should I just stick to location shots?
