Used as an antibacterial since the beginning of recorded history.Sage ale was a primary medieval bevarage and was noted as especially inebriating, not surprising as our old friend thujone is present.Buhner (1998) gives a number of recipes for ale, but be warned the wrong variety can taste dire.Spanish sage is thujone free and greek contains smallish amounts.
Contra-indicated in pregnancy because it is an excellent emmemagouge.Strongly antimicrobial.
