  1. The purpose [of the stones] was "propitiation of the crop gods and sexual and alcoholic-psychedelic orgies" . So it wasnt all fun then?
  2. Aurelius, ive moved your query into this thread where I think it might be at home. Scroll back from this post and you will see quite a debate has been had .

    Barbarians

Given Mr Jones' predisposition to naturism, I am relieved to hear he was fully clothed during the signing.
  4. Well, the best summary would be...submerged. There has been some initial dig work but this has been backfilled , I was there again yesterday and the site makes good sense in relation to the nearby Iron age fort. However I have little else to add at present.
  5. Savigny les Beaune , bit of a contrast I know but...
  6. A useful and provocative post. Does it mean that the transfiguration of Isis into the cult of the Virgin (Star of the Sea) was a matter of the passage of time ( amongst mariners and fishermen), given a desire for a Holy Mother? or is Magna Mater in this equation? If the Lady Isis is profoundly cthonic, perhaps we can make some assumptions as regards the Mithraic cults ie: that the transmission of her worship by the soldiery is a logical concomitent of the Mithraic cult?
  7. just the interview? does the mp3 have any of the recitation?

    Centurion and Scutum

Id suggest that the scutum design would be a factory produced item, the suggestion is that scutii are disposable items , because they would take a fearsome pasting above all other pieces of kit-so not much chance of re-cycling.

dilapidated , but in use-you can only reach it by boat.
  10. Best to open a Beaujolais Villages (Jadot) and assume a relaxed position...I lead by example. Well done GO. I hope AD isnt smirking too much

Best to reply by telling you how II Avg and VIII Avg go about it: if you are a Legionary (AD 50-150) you are in Segmentata (though its actual name is not known) , if you are an auxiliary you are in Hamata. Your helmet might be new or 50 years old, so long as it was up to the job.I suspect if you have looted a dead enemy or his city you will have various knick knacks ( belt badges/ornaments) but your phalerae and amulets will be bestowed largesse. If you are on horseback you will be a bit flash and have a rather various selection of helmets and be wearing hamata.Scroll back to this shot: http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...=si&img=917
  12. (no comment) hehehe Pertinax is that bracelet he's wearing also a symbol of his rank? I understood the amulets were, like the phalerae , awarded as mementoes of particular bravery-the conspicuous rewarding of bravery being a fundamental tenent of Roman martial activity.
  13. Bit late in on this one chaps...in reverse order , I think your man here may be optio , the feather or plume sockets are visible, but out of view he also has a socket to fix a crest (on the dome of the helmet). Draco is handy for the archers and artillery to know which way the wind is blowing of course, that is his original nomad provenance for horse archers.
  14. "Insouciance" might be the defining word for Harrison, he carries it wittily and with verve. Hinds is good , im happily wading through HBO and he is no slouch. I think Purefoys "Antoninus" is near perfect , I like Burton in "Cleopatra" but I think its his voice that is mesmeric. Poor old Kenneth Williams , if hed played it with a straight bat (so to speak) he would probably have been a very good Caligula.
  15. How very interesting, in the light of recent reactions and overreactions . How does that square with traditional storytelling in rural Italy , do you have any ideas ? Also three nights for three-four hours, just right for a slap up dinner amongst the nobility.

    Conium maculatum

Of course not... At first I got stares from my girlfriend like "who cares?" (I though to myself, 'you would if I put it in your Nalgene' ) I only located one small Yarrow plant. The Queen Anne's Lace however was EVERYWHERE! It is quite feasible to find Hemlock, Q A Lace, Yarrow , Dead Mans Fingers, Anise, Hogweed and the lowly Pignut within 100 feet of each other (if running water is nearby) of these, four make a reasonable mixed salad and three will kill you .
  17. LW Yes it was Tacitus , from "The Annals", the mans brutality was one of the factors in the revolt of Germanicus' men,(also quite well done in "The Caesars" TV series weve chatted about before). Check the gallery for a second post of the Centurions gear. I was wondering about taking the stick into battle myself WW, British Officers still took their "swagger sticks" with them in the II WW ("Bridge too far" is a most notable real life re creation ) , thats a question for the next re-enactment I think!

    Centurion and Scutum

That is the Capricorn (half goat/fish) symbol of II Avgusta, certainly no shrimp. The next man over is actually a very well equipped auxilliary, who seems to have got hold of a cavalry shield and a very good quality helmet.
  22. Surely He has , John was a considerable speaker and gave an Oration prior to the Secvnda taking to the field, he was a master of Artillery, Artist , Architectus and flamboyant Auxilliary!
  23. 1. I admire your new avatar! 2. This Primus Pilus is keen on "Dignitas" and expects his men to represent Rome with decorum and gravity, I doubt that he has followed the example from Tacitus that you cite, but I understand he eschews levity. Note his rank markings on the scutum, and the Legions Capricorn standard.

Yea his wrath will be vast, surely there will be great smitings. And indigestion.
