The "Introduction to Roman Religion " would be my choice. :sp_ike: Dont kick the Baby PP !

This is quite a handy and straightforward link for those with a liking for pointy , dangerous things. I was just looking for any contemporary manufacturer of small ("pocket" ) saex's (saex/sax/seax/scramseax) and dropped into the link. Those of you with an interest in the more obscure Eastern (Burma, Indonesia etc)bladed weapon designs will find this a good starting point. http://www.youandwhosearmy.co.uk/youandwhosearmy/weapons.asp and yes I did find someone who makes them: http://www.jelldragon.com/specials/spec1161.htm and also the wonderfully named "saxonviolence" http://www.saxonviolence.co.uk/ (sings" brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favourite weapon systems" :tank:

The hot weather in Britain has caused the outlines of ancient enclosures to become visible : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...in_page_id=1770

Indeed they are now merged , NTP just scroll backwards and you will see plenty of debate.

Most street deaths in the UK are caused by clinical obesity.

I suspect GO had these items in mind.. http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...=si&img=958 I was tempted to say all the locals would be dead .

Most kind, the Lochiel is an almost psychedelic tartan close-up, but walk twenty paces into the heather and you are invisible, quite interesting for light purple cross hatched with pink and green. The straw was inserted by a foolish artisan, a great effeminacy! However as Ladies were present they were offered the beverage first before the foppish addition was thrown aside.

As an example one might have Greek speaking slaves from the former Spartan colony at Tarantum , perhaps some also from Syracuse or other Greek influenced settlements on Sicily. Greek colonisation was very widespread and was , perhaps , more a cultural identity than an idea of nationhood or "national belonging".The long range trade links were spread from the northern shores of the Black Sea to Sicily and through the many Greek Islands .By about 440 BC Athens had contact with dozens of widespread "Greek" colonies, though it matters not if Athens was top dog in terms of political weight , the Games were a potent symbol of identity and competitive cultural aspiration. Local poulations tended to become adapted to Greek as the "lingua Franca" but AD will know the depth and breadth of this influence far better than I.

No problems flavouring a stew or unblocking your bile ducts with the Bay ( leaf , berry or oil would all be acceptable as food additives). Strictly, the Bay should not now be called "Bay Laurel" by an ethnobotanist but could reasonably be called "The Roman Laurel" (confused? So am I!) , the "Laurel" is taken to mean the Cherry Laurel. You may be amused to know that the Bay was a prized remedy for "hysterical movement of the womb" in French folk medicine. The Kirsch adulteration is a (fairly) well known early to mid 20th C adulteration, probably well under control by the early eighties-just dont buy any "house kirsch" at cut price.Or you may produce Delphic utterances...

"The lawn is an ass"

It was served with rare Angus beef garnished with a garlic and thyme butter, Pommes Frites and a purely decorative salad in the restaurant of Harvey Nichols. It was also trialed with dressed crab and smoked trout. Both wildly diverse meals were improved by its presence. However its moment of triumph was with , Carne di Cinghiale/ crevettes/ mature stilton / best olives / rough highland oatcakes as a buffet accompaniment. The Pertimaxus was a hit with nearby Gentlemen , but deemed a little fiery for the Ladies.

I presume everyone is too commited to the Bank Holiday weekend ( already) to make the trek, to York, on monday or tuesday of that week ( just over a week hence)?

Here we see a prototype Pertimaxus on field trials , this is a "light-medium" model , a cocktail glass is inappropriate due to the bulky nature of this ferocious admixture . Here we see that Neuilly Prat (two parts) have melded with Plymouth Gin (one part) and Duchy Ginger Cordial (one part) - this was mid afternoon so a full "assault version" was avoided ( with extra ginger and Polish Bison Grass Vodka).I must stress that the best quality Ginger ( not sweetened) be used . The trial was a total success , the renowned combination of palatte cleansing sharpness and brain numbing intoxication were achieved with ease.Afficionados wil note the background is the Cameron of Lochiel (hunting ) tartan, worn in a rather daring tie and waistcoat combination . Trials will continue, the UK Forum meet might be a good experimental background for scientific ingestion. My original recipe: http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4341&st=75

Hold on, Pertinax: in that first sentence, which plant do you mean by laurel? So sorrry , I didnt see this entry until just now- firstly I will deal with The Laurel or rather the Bay Laurel( Laurus nobilis): this is a mediterranean native (contains cineole as the major component about 50% captured from the volatile oil from the leaves) , thujones and sesquiterpenes also-normally can be used to provoke bile and aid digestion if used sparingly. Not to be confused with : Myrcia ie: West Indian Bay (Pimenta racemosa) which you put on your hair and is not a med range plant. and definitely not to be mixed up with my suggestion for the Delphic plant: Cherry Laurel: (Prunus laurocerasus) a native of Asia Minor and a source of hydrocyanic acid: I paste a quote here- "The leaves yield a volatile oil in the proportion of 40.5 grains to 1 lb. of leaves. This resembles oil of bitter almonds, and in Europe is sometimes sold for it, as flavouring, but the glucoside decomposes more slowly than crystallized amygdalin, and is liable to hold hydrocyanic acid, when it becomes poisonous. This glucoside was called Laurocerasin, or Amorphous amygdalin, and now Prulaurasin". This is of course known to us all as a fraudulent substitute for the flavouring in Kirsch. not to be confused with: Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) the plant indigenous to our American cousins and I am pleased to tell you that whisky is deemed to be the best antidote to it if ingested. It is called "sheepkill" I believe. So Cherry Laurel is my sugestion for Delphi.Apologies again for overlooking your comment. NB Wikipedia is not bad on non-fatal dose "behaviour" , ie: its very "non-specific " and baffling to practitioners.

So how exactly was this poisoned honey used against enemies? Was there food poisened with it? or was it somehow used in battle? It would have to be ingested, and would probably be a "delerient/asthenic" type poison, ie: you would be debilitated ( dizinness, nausea, a general enteric inflammation) but not killed-a far easier feat than stabbing several thousand people with a poisoned blade :stretcher: or hurling large pots of flaming honey at them.Look at my "poisons" guide in my blog for an idea of possible side effects: http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?automo...&&st=30 I quite like these new icons.

Yeah, well, most people back then were in shape because they had to be. I look at the obesity epidemic in modern America, and I think the Judeo-Christian ban on nudity is one prohibition I can tolerate. ^_^ Tthe Islamic prohibition on the display of female flesh is becoming a most seemly thing for this very reason.

So, no trance, just poisoning. No wonder they had back-up Pythiae. Perhaps the explicit show of chewing the leaves ( which would be purgative rather than deadly) was to give a theatrical effect, a considerable number of alternative hallucogens and intoxicants would have been known and possibly ingested without "show" .
