  3. Thank you, this is full of interesting titles, not least the food volume "New York Burning" and the "Conspiracy of Pontiac" look particularly interesting
  4. Voila -North American history! You are correct of course. Not "The Americas"
  5. I am indeed , but it bears repeating, thank you! That site bears out a quote from HBO Rome (as regards "freedom to act") "The Romans were violent, but they were free". Also , I cant read too much on that site at one go as it makes me agree with Kafka, "just because im not paranoid, :bash: doesnt mean they arent out to get me"
  6. Not to worry ,we will get together sooner or later!
  7. I'm not sure this would qualify in your interests on real social behavior, but its a fascinating insight into "frontier" culture. Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri: The Personal Narrative of Charles Larpenteur, 1833-1872 That is a very pertinent title. Thank you.
  8. Thank you Gentlemen, my interests would be 1.early colonisation and the role of the colonial powers 2. the political detail of the ACW. I have this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1862071...ay&v=glance and find it to be a rewarding and enlightening read.Similar items as regards "real" social behaviour would be interesting.
  9. May I ask what titles/resources my American Cousins suggest as essential , scholarly works on the history of their Nation?
  10. Pertinax, did the British version also cut the scene where Attia sends the Big Penis slave to her enemy as a peace offering? I heard he was played by a well known Italian *or* star. No the "sexual gift" was included. The British rather mysteriously were actually denied the better political scene setting interchanges, in the early episodes. I would add that I found the "incest" plot device to be the most unconvincing element in the whole story, was it included to make the series even more "sensational"?. I had heard that in Italy, the sexual content had been edited down. Having now re-watched the whole set , and being able to scrutinise the actors rather than attend to plot , I find the standard of the principles acting to be excellent-the voice coach is a genius , Hinds can easily hide his light Irish brogue but Kerry Condon is Miss Dublin 2006, and Kevin McKidd is impenetrably Scottish.Purefoy, Stevenson , Johnson, and Menzies speak as they are.
  11. Brixton/Clapham/Stockwell/Vauxhall- south of the Thames moving across Westminster Bridge .
  12. Given the history of "versus " threads , I will move this to the Hora Postillia for the sake of decorum.
  13. She was cut out of the British screen version, but is back in glorious chicken-colour in the box set.
  14. The armoury link is top notch Longbow, nice Saex article as well , I really like the look of the broken backed "mid sized" knives (the small 3 inch blades look a bit too "fat" , but the 7-10 inch weapons look very neat). Nowadays you would get a 440 gauge stainless as standard , that would be a serviceable item.
  15. Francis you need to be in this thread. Good hunting. An immediate general reply is -that as far as the the appearence of Rome , its physical setting , our knowledge of its life, street scenes, graffiti and moral codes go the setting is very accurate . The charachters themselves cannot help but be "modern" (to a degree) in attitude, demeanour and plot development.Huge effort (and money) was put in to achieve authentic appearence. If you take a little time to look through other threads related to individual questions .you will find useful answers.
  16. I think thats a bit of "creative " artistry , I am going to ask this chap if he can produce one -I have the bowie and the skinning knife , they are magnificent : http://www.shopping-emporium.co.uk/hunting...hing_knives.htm
  17. Apologies , once again light irony does not translate to the typed word!

    Toby

No no, Toby is all fluffy and sleepy, he just wants to bite the heads off a half dozen day old chicks and be stroked on his chin.
  19. did you perhaps stray to this link? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...in_page_id=1770

    Snake Eating Eagle

Not all, this fellow is an exception as are the Vultures- the latter being the most guileful and intelligent of all the birds, (but they need thermals to fly). To fly this particular bird the foremost requirement ,is a very strong arm!

    Cheese!

Well , I get my Mull (usually)from Loch Fyne ( I put a link in previously) , and it is flavoursome -the growing season is short but the grass is clean , hence the cows are wonderfully healthy and the cheese is testament to it.Here is Mr Mellis' link (the shop in question): http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mostof_s...h_cheeses.shtml The Mull is the splendidly coloured cheddar to the left extremity. I say to drink: a very clean Whiskey, (Tobermorey perhaps) , a dry champagne cocktail ( no sugar), or Oyster Stout. Port is a terrible social problem in Britain , it is appallingly infra dig to have stilton with/in port -a sort of ghastly lower middle class abomination BUT a glass of white port might be deemed civilised. A fine Calvados is not to be sneered at. Please define your terms as regards the English Keen.
  22. I assume that a poor pleb would have no room for a dog in his crowded insula, but that villa or farm dwellers would . Perhaps we have a modern example in Hong Kong, dogs are 1. to eat if bred for such a purpose (chubby, quick growing , tastey). 2. pets of the wealthy , who have space and time to pamper them ( small, fluffy) 3. nasty looking guard animals kept for that use alone (suspiciously like the Pompeian example).

    Cheese!

For the edification of Gaius Octavius ! Some saucey Scottiche cheeses. I chose Cachel Irish Blue , a hebridean sheeps cheese , an aged Kirkhams Lancashire and a very runny Brie. http://www.polsco.co.uk/acatalog/Smoked_Cheese.html

    Roman nails

I wondered why the Romans were so keen to take elaborate precautions to hide large amounts of un-used nails at Inchtuthil Fort when it was abandoned, the quantity of iron in these monsters is the obvious explanation. Until recently the best "rustic" shotgun barrels were made by the blacksmith from old nails , one could produce a handy number of edged weapons from a sizeable hoard of these. The exhibit is from the Museum of Scotland which has some excellent Roman artefacts but two problems, 1: appalling display lighting -I have a lot of exhibit shots but will be posting only a handful 2: a "Rome equals England" as external oppressors attitude , I actually felt that modern devolutionary politics had poisoned the scholarship of the museum. Very sad, I like the Scots enormously.
