  1. The whole thing plus various commentaries and add ons http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rome-Complete-Firs...8&s=gateway
  2. A fleet of barges is the trick answer. Heres a recce photo of same-
  3. Do you know if its the BBC or HBO Version out of curiousity. I didn't know that there was any difference. BBC has more sex and less politics The truncated episodes being 1,2 , 11 and 12, each of these "pairs" being edited together as single episodes.
  4. Given the fate of Z force http://www.microworks.net/pacific/personal/pow_repulse.htm , I fail to see the logic of the argument in the "revised" history. No air cover and the mightiest of ships are in trouble.Clear the sky first and proceed against any capital vessels.
  5. WW, Primus Pilus did this work previously: http://www.unrv.com/empire/roman-population.php Note his comments on expansion.
  6. L Q Cinncinatus lived c520 BC, served as Consul (once) and Dictator (twice), deemed to be a model of Roman virtue and dignity, returning to his farm after defeating the Volscians without retaining his dictatorial powers. As a strict Catonian I would have thought Vorenus would be an admirer of his.
  7. To fight without full armor is to fight expedetii , allowing fast assault ahead of a main battle line , or to be a flexible javelin throwing aid to same.I understand that Tacitus mentions heavy troops fighting expeditii to increase manoeuvrability.
  8. Indeed. Although I have to say their interpretation of Cleopatra, and the waif who plays her, leaves me a bit cold. I wass thinking more of Charmains line "let me give you a hand" .

    ok silly stuff goes here
  12. Please do not be alarmed if some movement of images takes place, as you may notice a specific "Roman Gallery" option has appeared -so we can divide our images 'tween strict historic discussion and more "personal"" or lighthearted images and comments.
  13. I do know that the white Oregon Truffle grows in association with the Douglas Fir.... Yes , that is a specific to your ecosystem alone.
  14. A fast recce to the small local museum in Lancaster, to peruse the Roman exhibits. This is a small municipal museum with limited space but a friendly attitude. I hope to be able to go back very soon and photograph items not on public display for your edification . Perhaps the most striking finds here are the "Burrow Heads" a series of substantial 3rd C AD monumental carvings that appear to represent The Elements. It is said they were recovered about a mile away from the present city in 1794. It is not known if they are funeray or sacredotal images. One is weathered almost blank , the others I display .It is possible they originally come from Calacvm, further north. http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...si&img=1118 http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...si&img=1119 http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...si&img=1120 Calvnivum fort site lies beneath the "modern" Lancaster Castle and Priory , the site commands the River Lune to the foot of the nearby hill , and hence any progress inland from the Hibernian netherlands. The excellent "Togo" has the details for army units here: http://www.roman-britain.org/places/lancaster.htm http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...si&img=1121 The Castle is notorious as the site of the famous "Lancashire Witch Trials" : http://www.pendlewitches.co.uk/index.php http://www.pendlewitchproje The ruins of a bathhouse remain, soon to be re-restored , as they often serve as an unofficial picnic area for revellers. And over here we have a gallery of ephemeral objects not yet annotated... http://triclinium.spaces.live.com/PersonalSpace/

Nevertheless , a thing of beauty.
  21. According to Pliny there was! I also offer that the ancient Greek word for truffle was phoringes and they also had a word hudnophullon for 'herbs' that grew over and were indicative of a truffle bearing location Pliny is certainly right about the influence of the weather, as I hinted a bad wine vintage =good truffle year.I am very interested to know what grows near /over the truffle "chamber" -I doubt that that sort of information is freely bandied about though.
  22. After long reflection , I have to say what an excellent link this is.
  23. " I wish to draw all Aryan blood to our cause, so we will never quarrel again" Perhaps I misquote Hitler( or perhaps shift context from Scandinavia) , but I think Phil's later remark regarding admiration and jealousy is very apposite. The Nazi officer caste that was manufactured at Bad Tolz, mimicked not only Himmler's bizzare love of the Arthurian legend but took up "country pursuits" in emulation of the British (English) self assured , rural haughtiness. No wonder Hitler struggled with vegetarianism. Mrs Simpsons Husband would happily have paraded himself, and his excellent casual tailoring , as pro German monarch-I suppose his defence must be stupidity and veniality.
  24. Thank you , molto gentile. Whilst we await , with bated breath , word from AD on possible Greek or Roman usage of the divine truffle , I offer all civilised persons this tantalising image: http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?act=mo...si&img=1106 I feel I must have "une omelette aux fine herbs" at once.

    Civilised Eating

I dare to display these items for your perusal, quite aware that AD might smite me for inappropriate choice of viands. Note please the most flavoursome "Gocce Di Tartufo" oil of the white truffle .
