  1. Not a bad trip to York , the winter sun doesnt help when trying to get panned shots of the walls so I think that will have to wait till spring. The Roman Bath's 'Museum" is in turmoil at present so no shots of that , however the Yorkshire Museum had an excellent array of items. The Walls were a bit tricky because of the lighting conditions so I concentrated on the Gatehouses. The wallls were in part original Roman built and constantly extended in medieval times. I was struck by the fact that the modern building lines of major new builds are directly influenced by the Roman street pattern -not the meandering Medieval layout.Stood on the top of the Minster you get an idea of the symmetry of the fortress and the related streets, ive posted a photo to illustrate this. The Minster is always impressive and I took a trip up to the roof of the main Tower ,hot work even on a cold day with a scarey traverse across a very low parapeted roof, medieval workmen were not 6 feet tall with largish feet is my surmise-I took a huge number of shots of the Wall but I think I will post just a few in case of battlement fatigue. Vindolanda next I think!
  2. English ,Italian to a fair standard and lousy French. Though in England about a couple of dozen mutually exclusive variants are spoken depending on age, location and social class, some would be considered a declaration of war if spoken at the wrong time. :2guns:
  3. this guy is a bit showy.

    The Central Tower

yes-thats what I climbed up, and its scarey -you have to cross a section of roof to change stairways

    Medieval Hall

The Merchanrt Adventurer's Hall- :pimp: a replacement of the original photo-this shows some alarmingly unsympathetic wireless masts in the background. Also note the traditional pink colour of the adjacent cottage , this is not Rose Madder dye but (originally) limewash mixed with cattle blood.
  6. a Legionarry dedication .

    Medieval Abbey

ruins adjacent to Bootham Bar and Multangular Tower. This construction of the Abbey undermined the nearby Norman Church ,( the weight of its construction causing subsidence ), it did not itself survive Henry The Eigth who needed the cash and wanted a quick divorce.

  10. Quite a few loopholes for projectile weapons. The North easterly facing gate, progressing clockwise from Bootham this is the next gate.
  11. The brightly lit street -running to the praetorian gate , I am stood at the top of the Central Tower of the Minster looking down to where the bulk of the Roman Fortress stood.Though oddlty enough my view is where the N E corner of the fortress would have been .

    Clifford's Tower

site of a bloody massacre in 1190.
  13. "of the Voltinian tribe of Vienne, Standard Bearer of the 9th Legion lies here" aged 28 years. Hmm-standard bearer of the Ninth Hispana eh? If you read "Minimus Secundus" we see Flavius preparing a memorial for the young soldier. Notice that he is wearing a woolen overgarment -a sort of poncho it would appear.

  19. This shot is a weld of two panned shots. The Tower was the corner of the defence system in Roman times, and built upon by later occupiers of the City.Note the definitive layer of Roman bricks -the red "tiles " running across the lower Tower.Above that layer we see constant accretions for each major period, terminating in the Medieval lancet ports. Described by Salway as (in the context of the rebuilt riverside defences of Eborascvm) one of Constantine's greatest works -notwithstanding Trier and Byzantium .

  20. Salve! Before I depart for Eboracvm -I would like to throw in a new thread : do members have information/links/observations on -the population of the Imperial period, its growth ,distribution, morbidity, ethnic make up?
  21. well thanks for the compliment! Off to Eboracvm now for a couple of days ,I hope some shots of the walls ,the Roman Multangular Tower , Baths and Clifford's Tower will result-but the weather is the key .
  22. my goodness that does look appetising.
  23. This is a shot to give an idea of what had to be faced to assault the northern face of Skipton Castle-and the walkway is a modern construction dividing the old river bed into a canalised section and a waterway
