I'm the youngest here then, I'm not even in high school, 8th grade is so lovely, and our high school has latin and the middle school does too. Unforuntely I am in a class of about...13 students. So lovely me, I don't have to work at all, ever, minus homework that is but that isn't really the same thing is it? Oh well, I feel bad for you...

What Would You Be In Roman Society....
Sextus Roscius replied to Sextus Roscius's topic in Imperium Romanorum
Personaly, I couldn't think of any thing more fun than sitting around all day reading and writing and discussing about the world, the ideas in it, and how it works. Drinking and feasts constantly just don't hold quite the same attraction to me, I'd get a stomach ache. Personaly I would want to be more laid back, and the role of philosipher fits my hobbies perfectly. Though I can see becoming a politician too...nahhh -
I thought some of my peers would enjoy the website: The Mutopia Project Its still growing, I happened to stumble across it in my search for motzart sheet music but it also has a good selection of recordings as well as sheet music, for free thank goodness. This website is one of a kind, or I haven't looked hard enough.

My topic seems to have grown since I last stoped in. This is most likely a over exageration, but I beleive that one of the worst punishments would have been one of Nero's concerts. He forced people to stay, if they left then the guards would kill them. It is rumoured that some people actually faked Dieing so that they could be released from the concert. Pretty lousy musician anyways, But not all who own a musical instrument are musicians. P.S. Can't resist to use a quote when i can

As Germanicus said, Publius Clodius (Cluadius Originaly) changed his name to change his status from patrician to pleblian. This was done so he could run for a specific office (once again I draw a blank on this) that was only avadiable to Pleblians. This also increased his poularity with the lower class since the records of him say he was some what of a Rabble Rouser. So yes it did happen, but I doubt very often.

Posting Ranks Explained
Sextus Roscius replied to Viggen's topic in Renuntiatio et Consilium Comitiorum
I like it alot better, and as a plebian, I can become a (what ever that office was. tribune I think?) instead of just being a plain old member. But I guess underneath the vanity, Its still the same lol. Oh yes, I see Viggen has taken advantage of the recent change and made him self "Imperator" All Hail! (or else I suppose but anyways) All hail! But what ever, I'm still having fun! :sniper: -
I now turn my thoughts of patricide as worse punishment, to this repugnant "feast?" if it can be called so. I must agree. "barren pig's womb" yuck!

What Would You Be In Roman Society....
Sextus Roscius replied to Sextus Roscius's topic in Imperium Romanorum
Interesting Ursus, personaly I wouldn't like to live as a Celtic Cheiftan. Not hygenic enough for me, and I like to live a life of gilded grandure (not to mention marble walls and mosiac floors) rather than large halls full of food and drink. -
Personaly, I have a corporate police state known as "the opressed peoples of the guys with the guns" its in the UNRV region. I think the game is very fun. Give me a little time to think about humourus, yet realistic situations on a daily basis. Try it out Here is a link to mine if it works The Opressed Peoples of The Guys With The Guns

I remember seeing it before and I think I played it once....or maybe not....oh well. I'll have to look into it now. Personaly for war/board games, I perfer Axis & Allies, thats another great game, but off subject.

Must be, it sorta scared me...

I apologize deeply for starting something.. I'll try to keep it more about Rome next time. And as for Favonius's remark I'll just keep my scilence as I should have before. My apologies, good night.

I'm sorry to say, but you must be living in a ulturnate reality to be able to say "what people do behind closed doors" It is no longer such in America, sexuality is massivly common place. I fear that our society will collapse because of it. We are breeding races of ignorant, arrogant, microteens... I'm not joking. My 6 year old sister goes around acting like she is 14, singing and listening to rap, and not to mention has already cursed. And it isn't just my sister, you can see it all the time. Its a horrible debasement to the United States. This is why radical Muslims hate us (some, but all mind you) becuase of the "obvious evils" of American soceity. Number one on the list is the amount of sexuality present, constantly. Roman culture was somewhat related to the United States in this sense but they didn't go around advertising themselves in the most revealing, yet legal, clothing possible. In America, many of our younger citizens (modern day teenagers in particualar) have chosen to use the quit part of ettiquit and is a large disgrace. Roman culture was much more moderated by social standards and If you were to go around as what some of the America citizens look like...then you would be shunned and most likely beat up or something. But the Idea of our world now becoming a puritan Theocracy is interesting, but aren't all the western countries governed by christians anyways. Personaly I think some of America's Political leaders make to many descisions based of religion, though most aren't likely to admit it. But as far as the world become a Oliver Cromwell style world....hard to see.

Worst General Or Politician In Roman History
Sextus Roscius replied to Sextus Roscius's topic in Imperium Romanorum
Point well said Platus... Also, Elagabalus is definatly a good choice for worst politician... Anymore or shall we leave this thread to Hades? -
I agree in part with both of you. While america's plitical system clearly is based off the Roman Republic, the actually history of America is more representative of that of Carthage. But if we truely follow the same path as the carthaginians then when will the moderen "Rome" so to speak destroy us. However our complexity of life is completely different to any of these powers and so I think it is impossible for The U.S. to really be completely related to them in terms of culture, though Rome's culture resembles ours very well in the sense of how people go about the daily lives and the government input, we follow a different moral code which has major impact. Though we may yet, as Rome did, see a dictator rise rather than be defeated by Rome's might. Which will happen? We may, just like the licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, never know...

As P.P. said it could be to increase the glory of Titus' achievement. Also, keep in mind that these legions where most likely not a full strength and some of the soldiers could've been quick recruits, armed with nothing more than a spear and a helmet.... So we don't mean 66,000 full equiped men, in perfect health, with all the nessacary supplies. Maybe the actually figures were more along the 40 or 50 thousand man line including calvary.

Mullet....doesn't sound pretty. You've really taken it into consideration eh sullafelix? BTW FLavius Valerius Constantinus, the instrument used for decimation was that the soilders who were chosen (one out of every ten randomly) were stoned to death while tied to a pole by the other soldiers who were not chosen..... Just to answer your question.

That one is definatly bad.... patricide is still the worst in my book but that one comes pretty close.... ummm....I didn't doo nothing...

Brainy Quote if that link worked right... Brainyquote.com is a great place for quotes of any age. Roman quotes have a good selection. Happy hunting

Got to agree with you on that one, ouch that has gotta hurt. But I'd still rather have that happen than the paracide punishment. Why didn't they just get things over with a slice their head off like the rench revolutionaries and Marie Antoniette. Sheesh, why did they have to be so fancy about it anyways lol...

I wanted to get people's opinions on the worst Roman punishment of the anceint world. Any time period is fine but I thought I might learn something new out of this and might make some people feel sympathetic for the criminals today he heh.... Personaly, I think the worst Roman punishment was the punishment for patricide or killing your father. This was considered a act of ultimate evil durring the pagan ages or Rome. The punishment was devised by the Priests of Jupiter rather than the roman politicians. My file name is actually the name fo some one accused of this crime and also the case where Cicero made himself famous The first thing that happened was that you were taken to the feild of Mars outside Rome. they would Then strip you of everything on you and have you put one foot on two pedestals placed a couple feet apart as to expose every part of your body. You were then wipped until there was no difference between flesh and blood on your body. The crowd was free to throw stones at you and about anything they wanted really. After you were completely whipped they took your naked body and but you in a sack with a snake, a chicken and a dog. This was to simbolize the reverse of being born. Thus un-born since you had taken the life of the one that gave life to you, it was seen as fit punishment. After you were in the bag with the other animals they would sow the bag shut and then chuck it in the Tiber. How gruesome I can only imagaine the poor person who had to do thins... :fish: P.S. not sure why I put the fish thing but I thought it was rather funny at the time...

You're a UNC alumni. Nice to meet you, but back to the subject. Virgil, when I said that the republic was over once Caesar crossed the rubicon, I meant that the republic was no longer the effective controling force. After that caesar and the empoers had to real power, the senate was no longer the deciding force. The empoers only had to maintain the senate to keep a sense of "freedom" in the public. Also the senate suggested things but the Empoer didn't have to do them. That is what I meant, rather than that there wasn't any Senate at all.
-
the republic was over when Caesar crossed the rubicon. There was not going to be more senators once that happened. Octavian played no role in whether or not there was going to be a series of Empoeres
-
Octavian would not have risen to be the same empeorer that he was if it had not been for caesars will. Infact, he wouldn't be much without caesar considering he was adopted heir rather than blood line. Perhaps at the end of the civil war then he would have still turned out on top but it is more likely that Antony would have become Empoerer. There is no telling what would've happened then. Perhaps for the better if Antony left Octavian as his heir and Octavian in turn left control of the Empire to germanicus rather than the obviously faulted Tiberius. But my answer remains the same. Octavian would not have been considered one fo the best Empoeres in history if he hadn't succeded Caesar to power. If Caesar hadn't left Octavian in his will in the first place then perhaps he would not have seemed as important and been more disregaurded. Ceasar's legions where very loyal to Caesar but once Caesar died they split apart to the different combatants. Perhaps some of Caesar's soldiers wouldn't have gone to Octavian had Caesar not designated him. There must have been some loyalty left to the legions.

Ancient Pagan Holidays
Sextus Roscius replied to Primus Pilus's topic in Templum Romae - Temple of Rome
Interesting, I didn't know that Haloween was of pagan origin. Thank you for the information, I'll have to look into it now. Good to know that the christians didn't change all the holidays. Do you know any good places to start on the subject? I'm not as well taught in Roman Holidays as I am in other areas. It would be most helpful. Once again, thanks. Now to google....
