  1. Woah, as lost warrior said, I thought that was a PHOTO, what a great painter. Once I become rich (if I ever manage to) I will definatly decorate my halls with murals and mosiacs to that quality.
  2. Certainly Noble, but there are many perfectly good scholars with great ideas who quite frankly aren't good at writing long papers. I don't think it should be like appling for a job, people should be rewarded for overall good contributions, not a paper. It is impossible to take all of ones ideas and abilities and view them throught a paper. However I do agree that people wouldn't need free stuff. Part of the benefit is the honor being selected and knowning that you have contributed and help the people of these hallowed webpages.
  3. Oh, thank you for the correction P.P. My mind was else where when I wrote.
  4. Personal, I'd have to say either the Civil war after Caesar's death or the one after Caligula's.
  5. read my revised idea after editting my post and you might find that interesting. I do like the idea, but this will take a lot of refining.
  6. Then perhaps the members "senate" could give out honorary titles to people they beleive have made contributions. Those would be temorary. So a person gets a reward in some way with that title and has it for a month or so then the senate selects a new one. A good way to reward some one for a series of particularly idea sparking posts etc. Keep away fromt he Roman re-enactment idea. As for those taken to the members "senate" could be chosen by the admin or it could just simply be a particular class group. The unfortunate problem with that is that the patricians are very small and it wouldn't be as interesting, and the equestrians and patricians (or the equestrians themselves) are too large a group. I'll work on some ideas further, but I think this is a step towards a selection out of some of the more extreme ideas I put out in previous posts. After posting I've seen that is seems Clodius has brainstormed some already Your idea is a solution to my delema, but I think doing it off amount of posts would be rediculous. It would make anyone who cared to post alot ,without putting much content into it, and filtering all those posts for value would simply take forever. Perhaps the original senate would be selected by our Admin and then the senate (along with the admin) could begin to select its own members who were considered to be quality contributers. Thoughts?
  7. Certainly not Ursus, but I think it would keep the group of people who's ideas are certainly considered priority from getting stale. Our Admin is incredibly inteligent and I think this would allow a much easier way of seeing wether or not the populus agrees with their ideas. I'm just musing here, and I suppose I've gotten off on a bit of a tangent. All I'm saying is that Admin, while smart and wise, still may not think the most people on a subject, and that would be another way for people to be upgraded. Also, the Admin ultimatly would have control over who was and was not in the Senate so to speak. Sorry to have gotten a bit to far on the subject but I'm just putting ideas on the table and it could be decided how extreme to go or not to go at all. But while were speaking hypotheticaly I see no need to hold back ideas that come to my head on the matter.
  8. Constantinople could've been saved, but it would've taken a large combined effort of many nations and a good religious cause. If the catholics seriously considered saving the city then it could've been done. But no matter what happened the Turks were going to take it eventually no matter how many troops were poured into the defense. Eventually the western armies would get battle weary and give up.
  9. Indeed. But perhaps we should stick to the point. I must agree with pyro, literature is highly important becuase it tells us about the past. Think about how much harder it would be to elarn about some one if they didn't right it down. We could know wat the different things were for, but peicing the puzzle together would be an enigma.
  10. A valid point, but so few are patricians. While I think that your system is well justified, I think we could benefit from a broader range of ideas. It would mix the newer players with the older players. That way we can know what the site looks like to the different groups rather than a particular one. I think that way the people could have their say effectively without any more spartacus revolts. It would keep from the Idea of the government with infinite wisedom. While I have full confidence in the mods and Triumvirate, I think democracy is great, and websites shouldn't have exceptions.
  11. Ok, so here it is. A rather interesting one (by my standards) Three men go to a Hotel, they are sharing a large room for $30 total. To even the prices, they each pitch in $10. So they go to their room. Once they are in their room, the manager realizes he charged them too much. The room really only cost $25 and so he went to the men
  12. Hail! For the Senate and People of Rome! May fortuna guide you
  13. A very interesting prospect Clodius. Perhaps the senate could be made up of patrician and equestrian volunteers. We could have elections. What a lovely prospect. That way people could use the senate to vote on changes rather than the tres imperators deciding everything. But once again, just a tought. As my avatar suggests, I am in full support of this movement.
  14. No sorry, I said they came from eastern europe. When I pointed out that indo means india, I didn't mean that Aryans came from indo, but that they were related as one group. The hypen to me represent the connection rather than the Indo which has never been applied to anything not refering to India in my knowledge and so I assume (and am agreed with from many sources world-wide) that Indo means india. Thats the thing, if we english speaking folks stoped taking so many short cuts we wouldn't have these problems.
  15. Not in are sense, but the surely did. It is impossible for a civilized culture to exist without music. They had fewer intsraments, sure, but they doesn't mean they didn't have music. It just wasn't written down E.G. Double Flute Lyre Drum Horn Bells The difference is that most music was to acompany an epic or story or play. But there was however music to not acompany things. Anyways, sorry to get off on that, I need to know how to say "where is she?" "off in the sun rise."
  16. A breif question. What Roman religion are we refering to? The Traditional Pantheon or Chrisitianity?
  17. The most definate proof that they are infinately related is the fact that there entire system is called INDO(india)-European! might that ring some bells. thats what the INDO part of indo-aryan, indo-iranian, and indo-china means. INDIA. Also, the fact that hindi is part of the INDO-European language group. I apologize for the annoyed feeling of my post.
  18. The spanish are famous for their guerullia tactics (Pompey in spain *cough*) becuase they knew they didn't have the ability to take eastern formations head on. This would explain why spain was juggled between the carthaginians, the romans, the romans against other romans, and then barbarians.
  19. Point well made, he is quite well fed. Fun job I would think, but you would have to make sure you only declaimed the postive ones or things could get quite nasty (as happened to many of the proclaimers in the French Revolution) But I must agree, I would rather like the pretty girl feeding my grapes at a lovely country villa in the Pompeian farmland (perferable I'd be on vacation from my lovely city home in the city) and you mustn't forget that we (depending on what time period) might have to abide by some code of ethics. So the villa would be quite the lovely retreat I would think.
  20. Among the frequent trials of my life, being the odd ball, the unpopular, the hated, the pessimistic, the nerd, the freak, and the history geek. I was plagued as any one would be with periods of time were I hated myself and all those around me. The turbulence of my early childhood, lookingback, seems to have been caused mostly by deaths of those in my family, who at the time were discarded in my mind becuase I didn't realize that their death affected me. As a young child I was racist, from which I have gone away from. I think the cause for that is not so much I hated people becuase of the color of their skin but what I hated about what I beleived (at the time) they represented and I made horribly mistaken biased opinions off those. I was also at a young age drawn to looking at the other side of things becuase of a friend of mine who was obsessed with learning about WWII and Nazi Germany in particular which gave me a different look at what they did than many others draw becuase I was exposed at the same time and in equal amounts the horrors they wreaked and the things they managed to achompish. I've had a interesting life far different from that of the average school kid, as can be seen considering I'm only in middle school and have earned a name for myself among scholars and teachers on this website and in other areas. But never, in all my years of living, have I seriously considered killing myself. It goes against my doctrine of life by all accounts. Since middle school started I've met multiple people who seriosuly thought about or had already tried to commit suicide. To some of which I held affection, to some I did not. The many people thinking of suicide is almost frightning. I suppose I am naive in thinking there wouldn't be so many, but the number is still disturbing. So I am left with that thought in the back of my mind now, and driven by it.
  21. My avatar is a bust of Cicero framed by a Golden Luarel Wreath. I've always admired Cicero's great rise from his humble beginnings and what a great Roman Advocate he was. I also greatly admire his devotion to democracy and traditional, stern Republican values and he resisted the debuachery and over-indulging life styles of the late Republic. All in all I see him very much as a symbol for democracy, tradition, and having high values that one wouldn't let quaver. The luarel wreath symbolizes greatness and power, somethign long sought after and the Luarel also represents the Empire that Cicero so valiantly fought to keep from happening.
  22. I was just pointing out that there was a connection. Since the Italic people are from people in central europe, and the Aryan people came from central/eastern europe the likelyhood is that the two cultures originated from the same group of people who settled in europe originaly and so would have a common ancestor, just incredibly far back. Also, I ask for your second paragraph that your try to reword. All the comas through me off and its made a hard time for me to understand it. I can't figure out what you are relating to what. Thank you.
  23. I'd have to say Roman literature/culture. Their instinct for writing everything down was a great benefit to us all. We also study the works of Roman philosphers. Not to mention the Romans developed a highly sophisticated social and cultural system that was unmatched in complexity for centuries. With so many customs, ways to advance, and the every day man's consistance intrest in politics and the arts they brought about a cultural revolution from the mainly tribal cultures of europe.
  24. Personaly, I think there should be a Blackadder style show about a roman merchant or the slave to a rich Roman. Perhaps a freedman? Ideas?
