    The story of the ferryman is quite simple. When you decended to the underworld you needed to pay the ferryman to have him take you across the River Styx without the coin you were stuck on the wrong side of the river.

    I am surprised that more people have not said sewage system. After all it had a huge impact with assisting to keep plague risk down and its aqueducts can still be seen in France and many roman pipes are still used today in Rome.

    Silentium since you live in Rome I was curious what the Roman feeling towards dogs are, since when I was there they were roaming the streets and eating scraps on the ground.

    I could tell from the previews it would be aweful, even though it had nicholas cage in it. A friend of mine wanted me to go see it with him and I told him if I wanted to waste my money I would go buy the movie Alexander.

    I want to thank PP and Ursus for doing a great job in their elimination of certain threads that have been too heated or users who are just being blatant idiots at times. The recent thread about Illyrians is a great example, keep up the good work gents.

    If I had my pick, I would choose a nice strong Gaulic man, with a wife to produce many children for slaves, the Gauls were incredibly strong and for the most part loyal, and boy could they produce children. If the romans had their ability, then Rome would have never died.

    Even the great julius caesar supposedly had a cat he gave to his 2nd wife before he left for gaul. As long as you did not have a dog in roman society it would be all good. Seeing dogs at times were considered a very bad omen, especially when dealing with sacrifices.

    Hamlicar Indiana jones movies are based off of actuall supposed artifacts and legends and legends and myths are just as much a part of history as anything is. One of my favorite things to study about Rome is its founding, which would make a hell of an Indiana Jones Movie.

    What is your favorite historical film and/or series, doesn't have to be ancient origninated and don't feel that the movie must be really accurate, ones that have a historical attempt are good too. My favorite historical movie would be a Napoleon 2 part movie done by A&E a few years ago, and my favorite series would be band of brothers.

    What is your favorite movie/TV show that is not historical I will start a new thread for that. Mine is Zoolander, great movie with ben stiller and owen wilson, as far as TV show, mine is that 70's show. Look forward to your responces.

    Zeke I have to disagree with you here, the majority of the economic prosperity for rome came from the conquest of Spain and the east. Gauls importance is later on as it helped spread christianity throughout europe as well as roman laws and roads.

    Alright this is long overdue. Anyone know anything about the Pontic Empire, as it is very important as it comes into conflict with rome, as Mithrades finds out very quickly, a rome with sulla is not the place to attack.

    Spain by far, because of the resources it produced for Rome. Also don't overlook Greece as it gave the Romans a door to the east and not to mention the future seat of Roman power after constantine.
