  1. The 2 classical juggernaught languages, Latin and Ancient Greek, should be available at every school no exceptions and if I had my way Latin would be a required language.
  2. Oh i hope you are not blaming caesar for begining a nasty trend. The reformation of the roman army was one of many reforms that led to the fall of the roman republic, but also a necessary one. the old system of troop recruitment could no longer be used due to the way that some Roman councils and procouncils recklessly used Roman and Allied lives so that the soldier availability was not there, so the head count was the only option.
  3. Historian in training. Will have my BA in history and classics soon, then will move on to get my masters in same area, then will get my phd in Greek and Roman history.
  4. I am a second year Latin student who can translate a fair amount. Also a devotee to Martial and his infamous wit and sarcasism.
  5. can you talk about this in the after hours area, it is drifting away from my intention of this topic. Thanks
  6. With the death of Marcellus as a result of an infamous ambush by Hannibal, Rome lost their best general, outside of Fabius, so far in the war. What was the impact of this on the war, could the war have been won sooner, or was it for the most part unimportant in the speed and outcome of the war.
  7. Macedon for sure controlled Corinth as a part of Phillips conquests and one of the 3 splits in the empire after Alexander's death, after the battle of Pydnia in 168 BC(may be off a little on date) Rome conquered all of Greece, would have earlier perhaps, but this pesky Carthaginian general kept crushing their armies.
  8. I think there was a person named romulus, but he was most likely an migrant to the area, also this depends on your feelings towards Aeneas, which is most likely mythical. And divine twins are a recurring theme in Greek mythology as well. For example, Amphion and Zethus in one of the Theban founding stories.
  9. I got to go with PP here, where is Commodus, you dont end the line of the good emperors stretching from Augustus to Aurellius and not get on this list.
  10. I am stunned that not many have said Augustus, he is by far the best. give any arguments how he was not the best. I can find none.
  11. Hate to tell you this but that is kind of synomomous with ancient societies, escpecially greek. It is so embedded in their society that there are many examples of it in mythology.
  12. Looks like I am alone in my defense of the republic, even though I greatly admire Gaius.
  13. In an answer to Germanicus answer of my post since i am just too lazy to move my mouse up to the quote button. If Caesar truly was a believer in the republic he would have volunteered himself into exile, even though it would have been unfair. To save the republic that was the only option, though as we have talked about before it was not a feasible option with the massive territory Rome had gained.
  14. I do read with that in mind, Phyrrus, but as I chose to begin with Livy instead of Polybius that is the only view I have, but know that he was biased and you can easily see it in his work, as well as a mixture of mythology.
  15. Caesar went against Roman law and entered the sacred pomerium with the title of imperator and took control of the city and created his own senate loyal to him. He was not cruel on to his opponents, but instead showed clemency. However, a diplomatic solution could have been reached, Caesars dignitas would have been damaged, but sometimes yielding to others, or following others is the only way to lead. On the flip side, we do not know how crucial dignitas were other than reading ancient sources.
  16. If I remember correctly, the Goths are one of the only reasons romes culture survived, through Spain.
  17. The smiling thing on top means it was a shot at humor, sarcasim mostly.
  18. Anybody else seen the crazy movie "A strange thing happened to me on my way to the Forum" Such a weird, yet funny movie.
  19. tonight will be number 3 for me. some comparrisons to the roman republics fall I see too. Emperor Palpatine represents Julius Caesar, in a much harsher way, and darth vader Augustus. And if you notice yoda's speech, it is literal translation of latin with verb mostly last.
  20. well europeans and germanicus, I guess that we will never come to an understanding on sports, as our sports are way too advanced for your cultures.
  21. Well Livy usually corrects the numbers from previous sources, however his new numbers are still probably exageratted.
  22. Just to clear it up, Pompeius gave himself the cognem Magnus I believe, or a close friend did.
  23. The republic could not longer govern the mass amount of territory Rome owned, I prefer the republic, but the empire was the only option.
