  1. Zeke I am not bashing your pagan beliefs, but archaelogical evidence has been found and analyzed by leading historians. There are parts of the myth that might be correct, but as far as the Roman people being descended from Aenas, a trojan prince, has been found to most likely be completly false. And a lot of Roman myth is copied from the Greeks and assimilated to meet their own needs. Most likely the original inhabitants of Rome were indo-european migraters who settled there and perhaps had a leader named Romulus. New evidence is found all the time, so the theory changes from time to time.
  2. thats complete myth. to get a good idea about where the romans come from read the beginnings of rome by T.J. Cornell
  3. May not be Irish, but I am part of the MacKay( alternate spelling McKay) clan from northern Scotland. Even got that bad temper.
  4. The Romans were in contact with the Greek culture throughout their founding( roughly 753 BCE) via Greek colonies in southern Italy. The Romans conquered Greece between the end of the Punic Wars and the Gracchus brothers assassinations, so in the late 2nd century BCE.
  5. Cincanattus's second dictator ship was also in Livy book 4.13- 16 in which he was appointed dictator to counter the threat of Maelius who was trying to become king, a big no no in Rome. Maelius was summonded to the dictator but was refused and consequently killed for refusing. For a little bit more accurate source you can also use Polybius.
  6. How can anyone look over Agrippa- Augustus' general.
  7. What really needs to be formed is an international historical artifact preservation society. I would be interested in helping out if one was formed.
  8. The crusaders however thought of the Byzantines as Greeks.
  9. Ok let me clear up my post a bit. I agree to restore it so it can be preserved, but not trying to imitate its former appearance during the days of the roman empire. Too many mistakes will be made and it takes away part of the fun with studying rome.
  10. If I recall correctly the Celts outside could not get in and Vercinigoritorex( or something around those lines) was forced to surrender.
  11. please do. I am very stubborn on my views and will argue them to the best of my knowledge.
  12. Now i recieve a lot of flak at times for my opinions on whether the Byzantine Empire was roman or not. My opinion is the Roman empire ended in 1054 with the great schism and that from then on the Byzantine empire was more greek- with mixture of arabic- than roman. post your thoughts.
  13. Your and my funeral games will be fused as we both will be assassinated by a leading aristocratic family
  14. I am totally against restoring anything in Rome. It ruins the integrety and rusticness of Rome as well as altering the Roman architecture.
  15. Back in the roman days it was not worth the effort. don't get me wrong I have a little family history from Ireland, but it would require extra troops where they could have been better used elsewhere, and Romans considered it a barbaric land and too far outside the reach of Rome.
  16. The Romans thought of beef to be barbaric food as well as too strong for their stomaches. Just think if you had been eating seafood and then changed to eating just red meat. Your stomache would not be able to handle it without a few rejections.
  17. Well first of all I would not be doing the cooking, instead my Gallic slave Bedoric would. And it would most likely consist of a moxture of seafood- like oysters, shrimp, various fish, lambs meat- as Romans hated beef-, and of course some olive bread with olive oil as well as some very strong wine from m vinard in Campania.
  18. Let me just say that I went to Rome last spring and it blew me away such a beautiful city. Everyone must make a trip there at least once and visit the forum ruins, palatine hill, and the trevi fountain.
  19. If you are only 15 and able to have discussions about Rome to the depth they are here you are one of two things: not being educated in America as our education system is slower than that of other countries or you are very intellegent.
  20. Alright then you think that the various Oblesiks in Rome need to be given back, even though they are artifacts of Roman victories.
  21. The thing that I admire most about rome is their architecture and their language, though I would not want to have to learn to speak it.
  22. I didn't take it until last semester, but it should definintly be offered at all schools as it also helps with english grammar. Even though it is a tough one to learn, it is also fun to learn. Each sentence is like a word problem.

    Herodotus

The thing about the ancient historians, with the exception of maybe Thucydides, have some great information, but don't believe eveything they say, Herodotus has stories about gold digging ants, but does provide a good base for the rise of Persia, however it is from a Greek, Ionian to be exact, so is a little biased. I would read it thinking it as literature rather than for history. Same with Livy.
