  1. Luckily, I'm still around to bother with this thread: Haec lex in re publica conspecta esse debet ne magnum partem superantem imperium habeant. I might be wrong with the word order regarding the purpose clause. Oh to the darn with it, anyone can correct me if they can.
  2. I have no idea why, but its look an extremely realistic painting.
  3. Would you care to tell us what your new job is?
  4. It seems like you have a crush. Naw, just kidding. You know, you're not the only person. It's actually kind of common, well to me. I don't know about you, but perhaps I call this being teenagers. Girlfriends, friends, et alia. Anyways, at least you have a beautiful friend, I seem to hardly find anyone at all.
  5. ATHENS, Greece - British and Greek archaeologists are preparing a major excavation on a tiny Greek island to try to explain why it produced history's largest collection of Cycladic flat-faced marble figurines. Artwork from barren Keros inspired such artists as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore but also attracted ruthless looters. Now experts are seeking insight into the island's possible role as a major religious center of the enigmatic Cycladic civilization some 4,500 years ago. Excavations will run April through June. "Keros is one of the riddles of prehistoric archaeology," said Peggy Sotirakopoulou, curator of the Cycladic collection at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens... via Yahoo News
  6. Give Pantagathus a Personal Message. He's good at word origins and usage. Well the word familia doesn't necessarily comes with the slave aspect, it had that aspect because it can come to describe any families including slaves. But one thing I believe is that the word family certainly does not come famulus beacause famulus strictly mean servant or slave, now that in no way has to do with family. Its all about familia and I have no idea how famulus got into the piture, I mean you can't say 'famuly' from the stem of famulus, which is why familia is more probable because its stem allows it to evolve into 'family'.Other words I know of for family might be Sanguis, sanguinis- blood;family progenies, progeniei- race, family, progeny cognatio, cognationis-blood relationship;relatives/kinsmen origio, originis- origin, source;birth, family If I were you, I would always stick with familia because to a Roman, there really isn't much of a slave aspect. Note these are just simple words that might have any significance compared to that of familia,-ae.
  7. I do believe I've seen it. The beginning of the movie with Sulla was a bit well flimsy. But when it came to the Gallics, they portrayed him as extremely merciful. Ok movie though, just bad script.
  8. Again this is where heavy extremely disciplined infantry comes into play. If you can maneuver thousands of men or even better, they do it themselves, then you truly can put good tactics to use and flank the enemy.
  9. You're welcome. I also intend to review two other books called Pandora's Daughter(a book about the essential role of woman in society) and Roman blood, another of Steven Saylors book.
  10. I see that you sure love reading the Gallic Wars. But I not sure if this thread is appropriate since its another vs, perhaps you can restate the idea.
  11. Not good at this, but I think that any kind of community that follows the same rules and beliefs in religious terms is a monastic. Now with that definition, any form of monasticism could have existed anywhere and anytime.
  12. I would laugh a lot too, but the old man just got his burned down, which is not really a laughing matter if think deeper about it.
  13. I suppose I have to wait many more years to see if the consequences are true as stated.
  14. Even though any of us can disagree with the comments/opinions made, but you can't argue with the statistics that project that the European continent is 'committing demographic suicide' with the extremely low birth rate.
  15. I live in North Carolina and I'll have you know that we don't want to merge with South Carolina, but if you're going at it, why don't you make Virginia and West Virgina on state all together, and don't you think its annoying having those tiny annoying states like delaware and Maryland around to mess up the electoral college, not to mention the senatorial vote. Personaly if we merge Viginia and West Virginia, while we're at it we can throw in delaware and Maryland. And let me make the additional suggestion of taking those annoying North Eastern States, e.g. vermont, maine, new hampshire, and stick them together into Vermaineshire, good ideas eh? I'm pretty sure 90%+ of the people living in those states would think you're crazy, just kidding.
  16. Link to article Archaeologists have unveiled two Iron Age "bog bodies" which were found in the Republic of Ireland. The bodies, which are both male and have been dated to more than 2,000 years old, probably belong to the victims of a ritual sacrifice. In common with other bog bodies, they show signs of having been tortured before their deaths. Details of the finds are outlined in a BBC Timewatch documentary to be screened on 20 January...
  17. Well no, no one should be forced to believe in Jesus. But that we still need the presence of religion or some good morals in our lives so that we do not go astray and become a unmoral society. The effects of being extremely secular can be consequential in the long run. Just my mere opinion.
  18. Yes, I know. I was astounded too, by God, life is punishing and uncanny.
  19. Link to full article Now a European atheist might be happy to hear that Europing is turning into a post Christian era, but secularism has its unwonderful effects. Note this is not the full article but this is the main point of why religion is needed:
  20. Now Pertinax, please show your true self instead of tempting us with paintings that my resemble yourself.
  21. link to article A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire. Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it. "I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday. Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house. No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed. Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks. "I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."
  22. The Roman Family by Suzanne Dixon The Roman Family is a book from series called Ancient Society and History that compromises of about ten books so far. The author of this interesting novel is Suzanne Dixon is a senior lecturer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland, Australia and she also happens to be the author of The Roman Mother. Now obviously, the focus and that of the author
