    Nero The Movie

Has anyone seen or heard of this? http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP....LOHS296%3dSPDE# I hope the link works. I was in Blockbuster tonight just looking for a movie and saw this on new release shelfs, it was released on 9/2005 I never heard of it, is this a remake? is it worth renting? Thanks
  2. sorry about the bad link. that was odd i wonder what happened
  3. Archaeologists digging beneath the Roman Forum have discovered a 3,000-year-old tomb that pre-dates the birth of ancient Rome by several hundred years. State TV Thursday night showed an excavation team removing vases from the tomb, which resembled a deep well. Archaeologists were excavating under the level of the ancient forum, a popular tourist site, when they dug up the tomb, which they suspect is part of an entire necropolis, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.... [edited out bad link and added partial story text, PP]

    Cleopatra

Cleopatra I thought I would pass this info along I just ordered this book for $5.39 I think it is a superb deal. I really love Michael Grant's style of writing and trying to find as many as book as I can written by him, since many seem to be out of print. Has anyone read this? Just curious. I know this is not directly about Roman History but a part of it.
  7. Though this is similar to posting above I thought I post it in their FAQ they now have it listed to come back in 2007 and production is starting this March http://www.hbo.com/corpinfo/faq/romefaq.shtml One issue that I always felt hurt HBO is the timespan is usually very long especially for a TV show. It really has to have a superb following such as Sopranos to pull it off. Some complaints from friensds who watch other HBO series, say it so long they forget all about it or what happened and hard for them to get back in. I understand it takes a long itme to produce these shows but too bad they could not speed it up a bit. I do beleive though this season is a make it or break it...by third or fourth episode if it does not pick up to what they want, probbaly be last season, I hope not.
  8. Ursus, Can I ask where you purchased this book? I cannot find it anywhere in NYC? I did find a used copy from Amazon but was hoping for a brand new copy if possible. Thanks
  9. I have that book, first book I picked up. It is a very good book to get an overall history, I really like Michael grant's style of writing.
  10. I have not heard anything yet from any of the NY local papers, and they usually get this info really quick. I am pretty sure they already renewed, and doubt they can back out of it now, though I guess anything is possible.
  11. Wow that last episode I thought was brilliant on how they tied everything together in the end. How they got Vorenus away in time. I won't give too much info for those who have not seen it yet. When the show ended I did not move for like 10 minutes, I as kind of sad in a way becuase I knew it will be a longtime before I see it again.
  12. I saw this in the bookstores today The Closing of the Western Mind : The Rise of Faith and the Fall of Reason by Charles Freeman http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/140003380...=books&v=glance I was going to pick it up but wanted to find out more info before I did so. It looked interesting but wondering has anyone read it?

    The Roman Emperors

I picked up from Barnes and Noble The Roman Emperors: A Biographical Guide to the Rulers of Imperial Rome, 31 B.C. - A.D. 476 by Michael Grant I was actually surprised to find it B&N does not seem to carry many Grants books, but I found this on a section for last minute bargain gifts or something like that. I only started to read some, but I really enjoy how it is laid out. I really like Michael Grant's style of writing and wish I can find more of his books.
  14. I am reading this book as well right now. I will be perfectly honest there are at times that I am quite lost. I have never read this in school or not that I recall. For myself it is difficult reading. Though I am still enjoyig it overall.
  15. Some good news.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/4402772.stm Rome drama draws in 6.6m audience It is taking the highest slot...so between US and UK hopefully enough to keep the series going.
  16. I am still upset HBO cancelled Carnivale. I am hoping the same does not happen to ROME. Carnivale was given a second season as well and they were hoping to get more viewers. The worst part was Carnivale was cancelled before they got to finish the story and left us fans out to dry. Other HBO shows were given a chance to at least know it was their last season and finish up like 6 feet under, and sex and the city. Oh well.
  17. Thanks it was a very good book and enjoyed it. I now picked up Tacticus from Penguin. A bit harder reading for myself but taking it slowly
  18. They are certainly using creative license to get 'our two heros' involved in the integral part of the story, but I still think its somewhat credible. We might think that the Egyptian Queen would not sully herself with a lowborn soldier, but how do we really know. Though I'm sure Cleopatra would have 'people' around her to provide that sort of ummm, distraction, if she needed it, so I guess the notion could be a bit silly. At any rate it didn't bother me all that much. The boy ends up dead in less than a generation anyway I did enjoy seeing Caesar finally acting somewhat with a take charge 'I AM CAESAR' kind of attitude. The exchanges between he, Ptolemy and the Egyptian advisors was well done. Along with the scene between Antony, Cicero and Brutus (even if it was a bit too, how can I say this... contrived perhaps?) this episode provided some excellent political intrigue. As for skipping a week... it seems to me that they are just trying to get as many people to get on board from the beginning as possible. It might be unorthodox for HBO (I wouldn't know, this is the only HBO series I've ever watched) but skipping a week is certainly nothing abnormal for non-cable television network series'. I enjoyed this episode myself. In fact last two episodes are my favorite so far. I am curious why Vorenus did not want to have sex with her. Was it becuase he was married and thinking of his wife, or becuase he felt like he was being treated as a slave? I might have missed some dialogue because my wife ketp on interrupting me and talking to me while it was playing. The only thing that confused me was how they skipped an entire year. I almost missed it and did not realize until I saw the baby. I am not use to HBO doing that. I guess in order to tell the whole story they have to fast forward a lot, like how fast they get from one place to another. With regards to skipping a week, it is somewaht normal, though most times they usually do it, when it a big holiday weekend, or something else. It does appear they are trying to get more viewers to watch from beginning. I don't know if that is good or bad, I wonder how the ratings have been. I am hoping it is picking up, I know it got renewed for second season. EDIT: well I found an article that seems good, it seems ratings are picking up, and things are looking very good. Interesting the writer talks about similar issues and his thoughts about the series though he is enjoying it very much http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...TL&type=tvradio
  19. Thanks for the insight. So far I am more then halfway and enjoying the book.
  20. I enjoyed this episode very much so. I was a bit dissapointed that they did not show more of the battle scenes. My only guess the reason they cut it out was due to high costs of battle scenes. It is just a guess. Not entirely sure why the cut most of the scene between Servila and Octavia. HBO is definitely not afraid to show controversial sex scenes, for example in OZ showing male to male. I did notice the episode ran the entire 1 hour, and maybe thye decided to edit that part to save time.
  21. Thanks all. When you say dated in terms of accuracy how accurate is the info? Have we learnt much more since 1940 about the Roman empire and how they lived?
  22. I was in Barnes & noble and was looking for another book to pick up after I have finished History of Rome by Grant. I was looking for the one recommended Handbook to Life in Ancient Rome by Adkins and Adkins but they did not have it in. I saw this book here instead http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearc...300101864&itm=1 and picked it up. Has anyone read it? What are your thoughts? this barnes & noble I went to was one made for colleges with textbooks, so they had a huge section of Ancient History books, it took me a long time to go through all the books. I never realized how many different categories and authors have written about those times.
  23. I know this is an old thread but I been trying to catch up since new here. Band of Brothers has to be my favorite, and that one episode you mentioned really effected me deeply. Well every epsiode did but that one in particular was really heavy.
  24. Well I finished the book already, I just could not put it down. I found it very interesting what Micahel Grant's thoughts on the fall of Rome, and really there was no one particular reason, but a host of many which makes sense. I am going to pick up this book as well recommended above by Ursus "Handbook to Life in Ancient Rome" by Adkins and Adkins. I was looking for other MIchael Grant's books, but it seems many are really hard to get in the U.S. or out of print I did see "World of Rome" by Grant, but I was in a rush to catch train yesterday and was not able to look through it has anyone read that? Any thoughts? Thanks I have been reading through this as well and thanks for the link and a geat resource.
  25. Thanks for the info. I am more then halfway through up to where he describes Hadrian. The book really picks up especially since I can relate a lot easier since I have been watching the HBO series. In fact I have been having a hard time putting it down =) I can see though this book is great for an overview but I am sure I am missing many details. I was actually curious what book I should pick up next, there are so many. I will look into your recommendation. Thanks
