The Roman Conquests were really a counter-reaction to the decades of Celtic-Druidic invasions. Savage people. The Roman World was never in domestic harmony itself, so as it pushed back these hordes of barbarian tribesmen , it did thus over time , in order to aid Rome in the establishment of Roman Law and order of the Celtic-Gauls , the conquered peoples of the Greek leagues ,the Macedonians the Eastern Kingdoms of Syria , Egypt and Carthage....all of these regions that then over centuries came under Roman Rule , they naturally had a vast number of peoples now accepted as into the Roman Order as .....Romans. No Political Unity at all. A Collective Unity Roman Unity Rome never had. The Internal struggles for power were as much to blame for the reversal of Roman ability as was the invading , and often revolting none Roman cultures, and above all the millions of Slaves brought into the Empire. Maintaining Order was difficult to say the least. Rome was generally, superior to the rest of the world in many ways, but never had it

History has Hannibal as an over-rated commander. To invade a power like Rome with 30,000 men , hoping to enlist the Gaullic tribes was foolish and weakened the valuable resources of Carthage. Vain Glory self-aggrandizing Hannibal. Thinking he was another Alexander.

Commodus , at the death of his father Aurelius, was actively engaged on the banks of the Danube; but growing weary of a military life; he concluded a hasty peace with the barbarians, and returning to Rome , abandoned the reins of government to Perennis , the head of the Praetorian guard, that he might better enjoy the luxuries of his station. His life was, however, soon endangered by the jealousy of his sister Lucilla. This plot was followed by another , in which the military chief endeavored to dethrone his master, but was detected and executed. The Freedman Cleander , a person of Thracian origin, being next promoted to the rank of favorite, carried his audacity almost to madness , inscribing newly manumitted slaves on the roll of the senate, and electing twenty-five consuls in a single year. He was put to death by Commodus to quiet a sedition of the populace. The mistrust of Commodus , and his ever growing cruelty gradually reached such an excess that he would be confidence in no one; and his chief delight was to descend armed into the public arena and contend with wild beast , or with gladiators whose only protection was a sword of lead( Not Wood how would that have appeared?) The people were so changed , that while the emperor declared by his edicts that his reign was the

<<<<<In AD192 the megalomania of Emperor Commodus was threatening to become murderous on a large scale, and those closest to him attempted to poison him in December of that year. This was unsuccessful so an athlete named Narcissus was sent in to strangle him.>>>> No... he was poisoned by his concubine Marcia , Eclectus his Chamberlain, and Laetus his Praetorian praefect , who alarmed by the fate of their companions and predecessors , resolved to prevent the destruction which every hour hung over their heads, either from the mad caprice of the tyrant , or the sudden indignation of the people. Marcia seized the occasion of presenting a draught of wine to her lover , after he had fatigued himself hunting wild beasts. Commodus retired to sleep; but while he was laboring with the effects of the poison and drunkenness , a robust youth, by profession a wrestler, entered his chamber , and strangled him without resistance.. ( December 31st AD 192. Commodus was Not a

What would have become of Octavian?
Segestan replied to Gaius Paulinus Maximus's topic in Res Publica
Caesar living until his natural death or even being murdered at a much latter date , this would only have altered the ways ,and the means of Octavion -
<<<<Me and a friend were debating this. I don't think so because he did so much for Rome. Expanded the empire, settled disputes. But my friend thinks he hurt Rome. He was becoming a dictator and the coins, statues and dictating style show it. What do you think? >>>> I think Caesar did Not deserve to be murdered. The Roman World that Julius Caesar conquered over was not the Old Roman Republic , but rather was an government of a tyrannical Oligarchy. A group of wealthy slave trading capitalist in Rome. Capitalist who used the ideas of Republican Patriotism to murder a true Patriot of the Roman world. The republic that the murderers said existed was in fact long ago faded away with the civil wars and the massive uses of slavery used throughout the Republic after the Punic Wars. The Greek and other internal influences of using slaves in collective farming and guilds was fundamental in destroying the republic while creating great wealth for the few land barons. 10,000 sold per-day. Julius Caesar only took from the treasonist oligarchy the peoples revenge.. he was a populist leader. The Oligarchy and it

Augustus installed a ..' Caesar's Tax ; his own personal tax revenue system. The people payed the state and also unto Caesar. His great public works deeds were not for the good of Rome but rather all payed for by the very persons whom he had, through state authority , had by default, placed as a dependent. His feeding of the masses with the great Grain of Egypt was nothing more than state sponsored ransom. As Christ is purported to have said: 'Pay unto Caesar that which is Caesars' and give unto God that which is his'. Only thing is : In Roman Imperial Religion of the Empire... of elitist .....Caesar WAS God. If I remember correctly: His restricting of freeing slaves was to protect a slave trading industry. A citizen had the right to free slaves. Many persons would come into the Empire willingly as Slaves that they could be latter freed by their Master and thus gain the priviledges of Citizenship. Most citizens never payed tax and could own land. The conquered Provinces were tax paying subjects.

The Blame for the Fall of the 'Roman Republic' should be placed in the hands of Slave trading capitalist. The Gracchi brothers merely tried to re-establish land laws that kept the farm in the hands of citizens. The Gracchi' were all murdered throw in the Tiber by the ruling elitist party. Human trafficing was BIG business. Whole towns would be enslaved by the payed-raiders looking for human merchandise. War was BIG business. Greed had everything to do with the social decay that is today defined as the Fall of the Roman Republic.

Hellenic culture was, generally from architecture , sciences etc, was a superior one compared to the world at large that was , generally speaking --uncivilized. THe world was Tribes struggling for order. That is to say the tribal cultures were less advanced than the city states in the ideas of Laws and Order , and with ones written of personal moral Justice as the foundation of that code. The Illuminated Cult at Samothrace was a very big influence on Hellenism. But it could also be said : The Hellens due to their ever constant conflicts of self-interest ; kept the Roman Republic from advancing to the next phase of Social evolution. It was the Greeks who brought much of the moral decay to Rome , it was the Greeks who sold the human masses into bondage at Delos , 10,000 souls per-day sold into bondage after Carthage. The Greeks were a huge reason slavery lasted as long as it did. Though clearly Not the Only reason. But to Give credits of such Granduer to the Hellens , without mention of the acts of terror and human bondage committed by the Greeks is unjust. They also conquested others for Taxation and slavery.

The credits of great leadership belonging to Julius Caesar are long. But to sum those up.... " At Rome , official enthusianism burst forth anew at the tidings of these successes ( in Spain) . The Senate decreed fifty days of supplications , and recognized Caesar's right to extend the Pomoerium , since he had extended the limits of the Empire..... After Thapsus ( defeat of the Pompeians) in on 6 April 46, (uncorrected calendar) , he was more than a demi-god ; after Munda , he was a God altogether .. " Never , it is said, was the great conqueror brought so near defeat and destruction" ; But he won the day in the end , and only Sextus Pompeius survived among the leaders of his enemies. THe dead on the field were 30,000. A statue was raised to him in the temple of Quirinus with the inscription : " To the Invincible God" and a college of priest , the Julians , was consecrated to him.... On the 13th September the dictator appeared at the gates of Rome. It was expected that he would take revenge on his enemies in Rome but instead he pardoned many. It was latter those who he had shown clemency and mercy to whom murdered Caesar at the foot of the Statue of Pompey.

Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus (Episode 21)
Segestan replied to Julia C's topic in Rome Television Series
I'll second that... the series needs to move away from their version of the family trees liberties and persuites and focus on real Roman history. Although it is good to see an series on Rome exist still it would , to me at least, be more entertaining to have the series take events as they arose one at a time. Real-Time series making. -
The US could Not have prevented nor delayed WWII regardless of any timing of events. WWII can be directly traced to the The Fall of the Ottoman Empire , the genocides in Armenia , the Wars in the Balkans resulting in the destruction of Macedonia , the creation of the Greek Empire; these then resulting in WWI ....all these movements happening within the Marxist movement, and Socialist idealism. The World was at a cultural cross roads after the Stock Market Plunge of 29. The Third World was broke , Europe was broke and in social chaos , the East was under Imperialism. America was the Only Free voice in the world. Would Freedom retreat or fight for survival? The world has progressed by great leaps since the Victorious allied Forces. The World has enjoyed a time of peace and prosperity since the end of hostilities in Europe primarily because of the US and NATO. Those days are near an end.

RTW is the best real-time game. RTRealism is a great Mod but of all the great mods to date; Bare Bones- Mundas Magnus is THE best Mod. Best Units and Maps. Gland to see the RTW series still has a good following .... cause there just has never been fun with a PC like these games offer. Would be nice to see a Mod that has a starting date of 390 BC , that is the Invasions of the Gauls , the current RTW starts -after- the death of Alexander the Great in 280 BC. I think History itself prior to Alexander's Rise during Galatian invasions into Italy and the burning of Rome and destruction of Macedon by the barbarian hordes , was a greater historical fulcrum than Alexander's conquests and his successors the Diadochi.. RT Realism 7 is going to be a a great mod but a modification that does not change the historical time-line.

This site is still the Best of the Best. Good Job to the moderators and membership. I'm sure it must at times be difficult to judge the historical value of topics but at this site it has been at least to date , possible to have open unbiased debate, a very rare commodity indeed. Thanks to UNRV

The ideas of Democracy were far more Roman than Greek. Why would you suppose a wealthy tyrant like Pericles, who was a true demogod, give the public the ideas of importance in the affairs of state yet he was never elected. Their was no popular vote in the city states. The Roman Republic was founded on a long history of democratic principals and these were best evolved once the Greeks were force out of Southern Italy. The Craddle of Democracy is a Roman legacy Not Greek. The Greeks never could see that kind of unity of will until they were put under Roman occupation.

Julius Caesar was the founder on the worlds greatest empire. Many scholars of antiquity have attempted to reason the personality of this man. Lord Bacon thought Julius Caesar to be the most complete character of all antiquity. " Nature seems incapable of such extraordinary combinations as composed his versatile capacity which was the wonder even of the Romans themselves. The first General-- he fought 50 battles , in which 1,192,000 men fell-- the Only Triumphant politician --- inferior to none in eloquence--comparable to any in the attainments of wisdom, in an age made up of the greatest commanders , statemen, orators, and philosophers , that ever appeared in the world--an author who composed a perfect specimen of military annals in his travelling carriage--he wrote as he fought, said Quinctilian-- at one time in a controversy with Cato , at another writing a treatise on punning, and collecting a set of good sayings-- fighting and making love at the same moment, and willing to abandon both his empire and his mistress for a sight of the foundations of the Nile. Such did Julius Caesar appear to his contemporaries and to those of subsequent ages who were the most inclined to deplore and execrate his fatal genius" also on the topic of Caligula--- his condition of not having more than 3 hours sleep at any given time was the prime reason he lost his humanity. regards,

The claims of Pythagoras very much resemble those of Solomon. I do Not claim his story as given down to us, to be the facts in there entirety. However, I do think that this man had certain powers far beyond the common oracle of his day. Just were to many powerful followers of held him as a God for a mere magician. Many of his purported ideas on the condition of the soul in the afterlife , or the supposed recorded drama' in which those souls had lived , including his own, finding themselves in the mortal life is to a great degree factual. A topic beyond this thread. His ability to speak to animals is not as non-sensical as first might appear. This topic could venture into the trans-migration of souls therefore I will Not add on that. But he certainly was far more to those of his day than an mathematics wiz he was a philosopher who founded an Academy for the finest minds in all the known world.

Pythagoras was far more than a mathematics wizard. The author knows little or nothing of the power held within the being of Pythagoras' self-will.He did Not gain fame from deducting the mathematical designs of creation. Pythagoras believed in the trans-migration of souls. Says Pythagoras;" he remembered in what bodies he had been before he was Pythagoras. But he went no farther back than the siege of Troy. He had first been Ethalides, the supposed son of Mercury, and having had permission to ask whatever he pleased of that God , except immortality, he desired that he might remember all things even after death. Some time after he was Euphorbus, and received a mortal wound from Menelaus at the siege of Troy. His soul passed afterwards into Hermotimus, at which time he entered the temple of Apollo in the country of the Branchidae, where he saw his buckler , ---a shield--, eaten up with rust , which Menelaus on his return from Troy had consecrated to that god in token of his victory. He was afterwards a fisherman of Delos , named Pyrrhus ; and lastly, Pythagoras. He affirmed that in a voyage which he had made to Hell , he had seen the soul of the poet Hesiod fastened with chains to a pillar of brass, and suffering great torments. That as for that of Homer , he had seen it hanging on a tree, surrounded with serpents, upon account of the many falsehoods he had invented and ascribed to the gods; and that the souls of the husbands , who had lived amiss with their wives , were severely tormented in that region. Pythgoras was
