  1. Oh, I forgot. I meant the tribes that interacted or co-existed with the roman empire.
  2. I must admit, I'm a little more interested in the history of the various barbarian tribes than roman history, and the poll about what roman city you liked best inspired me.. What (germanic) tribe do you like more? I've used Tacitus' "Germania". A poll about kelt tribes may follow.
  3. The roman military system was the most advanced at the time, they conquerored much of their known world, and put their marks on all of it. But was the roman cohorts really invincible? Through history, they where defeated several times, but why? What was their weakness? After all, they where human.
  4. I think I read that in duels (holmgang) the combatants from each tribe used the "tribal weapon", the Heruskoz propably used swords in such duels.
  5. Just found out, and thought the least thing I could do was to share the info with you. Cherusci (or rather Heruskoz) means "sword-people", and Heru was the sword god of the Heruskoz. He wielded a magical sword smithed by dwarves, who could destroy an unworthy wielder.
  6. Sorry, maybe I should've been more clear. I meant the meaning of the NAME Cherusci. Maybe some sort of animal?
  7. Please, I need help from you guys. Can anybody answer me about the meaning of "Cherusci"? I would owe you one.
  8. Similarities do exist. The political system, the way they wage war (i do think that). But i don't think that USA can be compared to The Roman Empire. And neither of them are "evil empires".. Still, i look on USA as an Empire. They are the only superpower in the world. I said earlier that i think the way of waging war is quite similar, but starting a war is a very different prosess. Roman wars was just a result from ambitions, ambitions and yet ambitions. The wars of the USA is a result from almost endless patriotism, and incrisingly larger paranoia. (Acutally, i do think the Americans have good reason for it too..) EDIT: Oh, i'm sorry. If you think this has little to do with the Roman Empire i shouldn't post. I'm not as good reading posts before i post myself as i should have been..
  9. >Hello i am Anthonius. This "welcome threads" are really hard.. I'm 13 years old and interested in history, i live in Norway.
