Rodent Has Its Revenge

I suppose, but that's some poetic justice!! This was on the local news last night. Fire officials have decided that the mouse is not to be held responsible. -

Lost_Warrior replied to Moonlapse's topic in Renuntiatio et Consilium Comitiorum
I just now found this thread honestly. I love my map (btw guys it looks very good in a simple gold poster frame ) I'm having fun trying to figure out what countries and places the latin-named places are (geography is NOT my strong suit lol) -

Mark Twain! WhOOt! lol I love that book. Honestly I don't think he should be dismissed as crazy, but I'm wondering why he would attempt such action. I have no problem with the point he's trying to make, I just wonder if there isn't a more effective (and less expensive) way? -
Architecture & Technology Forum?
Lost_Warrior replied to Sextus Roscius's topic in Renuntiatio et Consilium Comitiorum
If not we should have a place where they DO fit as they are thoroughly interesting -
Glad to see you back! I wasn't so much worried (I knew the forums would be back up in practically no time), as annoyed as I knew I had a PM that I could not get to...lol. An upgrade would be good, but you seem to have a good setup here (It's a million times better than the free hosts I got stuck using)

My vote is for good old Julius Caesar. I agree that Augustus did more of the Empire building, however without J.C. there would be no Augustus

I didn't know there WAS a spellcheck on this forum actually (although I wouldn't use it anyway. I use Firefox lol) Spellcheck is a useful feature, but spellchecks seem to be problematic for me (especially in a forum where people are apt to say things in Latin)

Thanks

Lol it's a miracle I have a laptop at ALL lol. Not that it will get much use. I much prefer my PC actually. It does almost everything its supposed to (except for shutting down in a timely manner. but eh, its a quirk I guess.) Cato, what did you do to the page?? That ad is a little big...

Oh, I just figured out what you meant by "Yafu" doi I'm so stupid sometimes... lol cool, what exactly does this upgrade do?

Wow...that IS absurd. Why do people REALLY find it necessary to do this sort of thing? -
Windows spell check isn't all that great. It keeps telling me I spelled my name wrong

My mom had that statue for a while (a small reproduction of it)

Ok, so I went to see my dad's side of the family over christmas break. It was pretty hectic sometimes, but I'm really glad I went. I got to see Chronicles of Narnia, its a great movie, I highly recommend it. We got to the theatre late, but that only meant we missed the boring part where they set up the plot, and got there just as Mr. Tomnas entered the picture SO I get home. Now, all of my teachers assigned work over vacation (well...many of them did.) It's the "you're going on vacation so you'll have plenty of time to do three projects and twelve pages of problems" syndrome. Unfortunately, I was going away lol. And when I got back I was too distracted by my new colored pencils to get any work done So I'm working on my lab report. My dad gave me a new laptop (well..."new". The thing runs on Windows 95 and thinks its 1988 ). I thought I'd do my lab report on it, and hook it up to the printer (you know, so I can do my homework in bed. big mistake). The thing refused to print. WELL it printed SOMETHING, but it wasn't my lab report. You see, the thing must have thought it was simply hilarious to spit out about twelve pages with one line of nonsensical jibberish at the bottom Ok, I think, so I'll just put a cd in the drive, save it to cd and print it on my computer. Yea. OK. The cd drive happens to be broken. Great. I find ONE floppy disk in my closet, the only one left in the house. I save it to the floppy though my pc doesn't have a floppy drive. I'll have to print it at school. When I get it to school, and try to print it, the disk is broken. It causes the computer to freeze up SO I take another disk home, and manage to get it on that disk. I finally get it to print YAY Of course, I get it to print the day after it's due Now I'm finally done with the OTHER two projects, one a seven page chemistry report and one a simple english paper. And if I ever mention using that laptop again, somebody please smack me Thank Gods it's friday. At some point I am thinking of writing an actual paper on Roman paganism (different then the things that have already been posted...well if I get around to actually writing it you'll see) that is if I can tear myself away from my colored pencils

Spurius, I am so incredibly sorry to hear this news. I know I can't understand how it feels, but you have my deepest sympathies. I will be praying for little Marrian Elizabeth and your family.

I don't know, americans who want to seem high class usually use British accents There is one accent, the southern accent which is in some parts of america considered definitely low class (in fact I knew someone who moved up north and intentionally disguised her voice so as not to be a laughing stock) There are also some dialects, like the "gangsta" dialect often found in the cities and among rappers (you know what I'm talking about) but i'm not really sure what class that would belong to. I don't really associate it with any class. Actually, I don't really associate accents with class at all, though I know many do. It never really crossed my mind. I can't honestly figure out why they don't just use Italian accents. If they want to differentiate between say, Italians and those in the non-Italian provinces they could use say...a German accent for the provinces. Or Irish or Scottish (Celtic)...use a Greek accent for Greeks, etc.

Two Very Interesting Things

True, true. But I'm thinking about the amount of time, and money and resources required to do this, and in my mind it just isn't worth it. But then, I was never a math person anyway. And the guy probably got paid a rediculous amount for his discovery. Although, now I gotta wonder: how in the heck did they figure that it was the largest prime number? How do they know? -

mmhmm....well, still, it seems to me that with all of the problems in the world, that wouldn't be the top of my list. If I had a choice of working on a cure for AIDS, or finding the Largest Prime Number in the Universe, I'd be working on the AIDS. -
Yes, that would probably strengthen the Senate. I was simply using the wages as a hypothetical example. What I meant was, find out what it is that is making the men unhappy with the State, and change it. lol maybe. It seems to me, though, that the Republic *could* have been saved, but it would basically involve going back to the way things had been in the past, when the Republic was strong. That wouldn't be a good idea on so many levels (for one thing, the Roman "empire" would not be able to become as large or as strong, and would probably have gotten it's butt kicked long ago. Not to mention undoing many of the reforms, limiting the Tribune's power, etc would be NOT good for the people, IMO). It could have been saved, but Rome would not have become what it was had the Republic continued.

Whales speak in dialects? I'm not surprised, but this raises the question: how do migrating whales communicate with each other? Are there some.."words" that are universal? I a pod from the north meets a pod from the south, for instance, how do they "speak" to each other? I don't understand why there could not be an infinite amount of prime numbers if there is an infinite amount of numbers, though I suppose when the numbers eventually get large enough they are bound to be divisible by *something*. What surprises me is that they actually bothered to find it. Seriously, what is the importance of discovering the largest prime number? And I wonder how much money they spent in order to gather this information? -
My solution seems simple enough, although I will admit that I have no experience in government and in practice it may be very difficult: Limit the power of those in control of the senate. No, not abolish, however limiting the power and therefore the influence of those who are "making puppets of" the senate will restore the senate's power. Rotating legions would not be a good idea, simply because a legion "gets used to" a certain general and would likely resent such treatment. Loyalty to a general is not a problem if the legions are still loyal to Rome as well. The problem came when the legions became loyal only to the general. I would say, find a way to increase the legions' loyalty to the state as well. This could be done in a number of ways. Stricter control over the entire military system by the senate (well, in this case, what's left of it) is necessary, but does little to actually increase loyalty. Instead, it handles the problem of the wayward generals. In order to increase the loyalty to Rome it would first have to be discerned what exactly is making the men disloyal to the state. Those problems could then have been addressed. It could be something as simple as better rations, on increased wages, which would boost morale. As for the triumphs, wasn't it at one point more restricted? I know that at first, at least, not every general was even allowed to have a triumph. Later, however, any general who had "earned" it, could get one. Though it seems to me that these generals did things that they should NOT have been rewarded for. Maybe that is the problem. Generals being given the greatest honor for doing things that they most likely should have been punished for.
