Yes, I think the figure was 10% of gladiators actually died. The rest lived. Of course, there were many who died who weren't real specialized gladiators, they were pretty much thrown in the arena to die...execution fights...at least that is what I've read correct me if I'm wrong.

Availability Of Arms And Armor

Actually I believe stilletoes were developed in order to get through chain mail. What we have, ladies and gentlemen, is the first appearance of the Pen Knife! -
Bomb Threats, Early Dismissals, And Searches...
Lost_Warrior posted a blog entry in Lost_Warrior's Blog
Yesterday we got out of school...well...about 5 minutes early. They made an announcement that all after school activities were cancelled, and that all students were to exit the building on the bell. They then rang the bell five minutes early. We all knew something was wrong, but we were like, "what the heck, we ain't complainin'". I find out later that there was writing found in the bathroom saying something that the teachers found remotely threatening. Apparently, they were the only ones to find it threatening because I also heard that it had been there for close to two weeks before it was noticed. (I also heard another story, that a note was found along with several people's initials. ) I don't know exactly what happened, because they were reluctant to give any real information. I do know that they spent at least $1000 to fly in the K9 unit. This morning we get to school, and there is a huge line at the door. They were searching everyone's backpacks and purses before they let them in the school (mind you, they didn't look terribly hard.) They seemed more concerned about cell phones than bombs (look out for that Verizon TNT. It's a new model I kid.) Basically, it was a big aggravation, (and a bit of a joke to the very annoyed students) but I really doubt they'll find anything. That's the way these things go... I seriously hope this doesn't happen again. I'm not afraid, and as far as I know none of the students were either. It's just a major annoyance. I can't imagine what kind of ^&%&^ it would take to do such a thing...surely they only wanted to cause a disruption (some of us really ARE trying to learn. Plus, that K9 unit will probably come out of taxpayers' pockets.) I AM going to start working on the research paper. (Unfortunately for me I tried to start it the week I had a whole slew of projects due and the like). If I don't report back with an update, smack me -

I love pumpkin seeds roasted with a little salt (DON'T buy them in the store, get them right out of the pumpkin and DON'T wash them first. That "goo" on them is where most of the good flavor is. Just spread them on a tray and pop them in the oven for a few mins untill they're golden brown...) Wasabi is great to clear out your sinuses, however it is an aquired taste and somewhat hard to find. ::munches wasabi coated peanuts::

Which Contate Domino did you sing? I'm aware that there are several. The one we sang goes "contate domino, cante cum no vum" Now we're singing some 50's music, which I'm really NOT fond of at all...

I have a similar problem with my vocabulary book...it tends to contain "practice sentences" that are ignorant and in some way offensive... example: "superstitious Roman emporers would consult necromancers or other dabblers in the black arts." that was actually in my vocab book. Maybe not exactly (as I'm trying to remember it now at home without said book) but basically with the same meaning. also this one: "all Americans abhor slavery in all it's forms." is a false statement and simply offensive to anyone who DOESN'T "abhor slavery in all it's forms" (provided they are american)

It seems to me they tried to convert America to metric but it just didn't work. You see it on some products, like bottles of soda for example are measured in litres (a two litre bottle of soda, or one litre. measurements are given in ounces also on the bottle). The reason they had trouble converting is that we are used to the system. We don't realize, how much we use it, but when something is 20 miles away we have a rough idea of where that is, how long it will take to get there, etc. If its 20 kilometers we have no clue. Switching systems would mean re-learning a thought pattern that has been ingrained in us since birth...and really most don't think it's worth it. Same with temp. scale. If its 70 degrees Fahrenheit we have a rough idea of what it's going to feel like outside, what sort of clothes to wear, etc. If its 70 degrees Centegrade, we have no idea...and so it becomes trial and error basically relearning all of those things.

Question For Australians

Where I'm at, at least in the summers at pow-wows, I see alot of tame wolves (generally not full wolves, though one was like...90% I think) they are very friendly towards humans, though they will have a go at other dogs, especially the hapless chihuahua lol. Where I live now there's mostly snow to deal with, but it's not usually disastrous merely a great big wet white inconvenience. Where I used to live there was problems with flooding in the developed areas, and occasionally a persistant tropical storm that actually managed to get to pennsylvania, but they weren't so bad. Earthquakes were rare and tiny...people usually slept through them. Tornados were another story, but pretty rare. I do know that when my parents moved in our neighbor lost his roof...twice...I think...before he ever moved in! First a hurricane then a tornado (or was it the other way 'round?). The winters were bad, but only because no one knew how to deal with them. I think the biggest problem in pennsylvania is the deer that like to jump into the sides of peoples cars. And the "tame" deer that are a serious danger to any lettuce in the open trunk of a car -

How did they tell what time it was? Sundials don't work very well at night....and you can only use the stars if it isn't cloudy.

"Family Guy" is great. so is "the War at Home" (ever seen it? I HIGHLY recommend it), Simpsons...well...anything that's on fox on sunday nights except for the football...

That does sound good...I doubt I'll ever have a chance to make it though.

ick...I didn't follow his old show lol. I heard it once or twice and found it to be thoroughly disgusting. Now the Y100 morning show is hilarious (bizzaro file anyone?)

Myrrh (Commiphora molmol and others).
Lost_Warrior commented on Pertinax's gallery image in Everything Else
Always look on the bright side of life I just watched "the Life of Brian" last night!! (seriously I was wondering what movie that song came from. Now I know ) You know, that's a strange looking plant. It almost appears to grow like one that is in my back yard. We thought it was a lilac at first, but it has thorns. Oh, and it grows bright pink flowers and appears to bloom "on old wood". (I don't think it's myrrh, it just grows similarly.) I always wondered what myrrh was actually used for, other than incense. (or maybe that's Frankincense. Didn't some people use myrrh for incense as well?) -
Cool What is this job may I ask?

Rodent Has Its Revenge

Well, certain types of curtains burn very easily. I'm guessing the curtains caught, as it said the mouse ran underneath the window. And mice run very fast...if you've ever tried to catch one...and if you were a mouse on fire you would probably run pretty fast too. -
