  1. Ok, it was believed that it was honorable to die for one's country...similar beliefs are held almost all over the world even now. (that's what I've been trying to say all along I guess I didn't quite make it lol)

    squirrel

AWWWW LMAO another fuzzy eared squirrel! And you can actually tell that it's long hairs in this picture. So cute! And goofy looking!
  3. I like the moon in this one too, though I love the "behind waterfall" I don't like what's supposed to be rocks around it, it looks strange somehow Thanks!!
  4. I don't think there were any honors awarded, it was just a belief. They didn't hand out medals to the dead or anything.
  5. It's more believable on the actual painting. This photo of the original kind of botched the colors. (The top of the sky is actually a deep blue fading to a red color)
  6. I'm really proud of this one. Took me about an hour. Second attempt at waterfall
  7. My first attempt at painting waterfalls. My mom loved it...there's alot of things I would change about it though. Forgive the quality of the picture lol I've yet to learn how to get a good image.

I've never tried oil tempra. I've never even heard of it lol i'll have to look into it. I want to try oil now, but its messy, expensive, and takes forever to dry...i dont reallly have the setup for oil in my house...i dont have a studio i have an easel in my living room.
  9. Just remember that "Wicca" does not encourage depression, in it's true form it is a true religion which has greatly improved the lives of many of it's practitioners. Of course there are many who practice something they call Wicca but which really, is not and gives a bad name to all Wiccans.
  10. I would assume not, lol Rome would hardly give her enemies honors However considering it a great honor to die in battle for Rome serves several purposes: it increases moral (by *lessening* though not eliminating the fear of death in battle by making such death an honor) and by hailing those who died in battle as heros as well as those who lived, it paints a picture of "Roman army=hero" any way you look at it. So it becomes a rather practical viewpoint to be held, though how tightly it was held was up to the individual and the time period.
  11. That is similar to the modern "cure" (not seriously used as this one was, although quite often referred to)~ "hit your thumb with a hammer to make a headache stop"
  12. I thought she was Brutus' daughter?...oh, wait, she was Brutus' wife. Thats right...lol Hm...I read that somewhere...Perhaps though, the great "honor" was a matter of convenience. It was of practical importance to rescue any that could be rescued, however if one happened to die, despite everyone's best efforts, it was still a great honor to that person.
  13. The old "cure" for stomachache: wash your feet and then drink the water (that you used to wash your feet) imagine the diseases you could get by that!!!
  14. I believe it was considered the greatest honor to die on Mars' field (battle field) As for the childbirth thing I have no idea.
  15. I see... This also makes sense, though it seems to me a little over the top. I'm guessing Plutarch took liberties with the story
  16. Makes sense. As Pertinax mentioned before this is seen in alot of "older" traditions. Was it only with the rise of Christianity that this practice was discontinued? Also makes perfect sense. Ouch! Had to make it as horrid as possible for himself didn't he?
  17. LOLOL!! I think I want to watch that movie again now!
  18. I picked this topic up from "Pretorian Guard" as it seemed interesting How did Romans view suicide? I know it was not seen as "taboo" as it is today, but rather a way to preserve honor, however were there social restrictions on it? I remember reading in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (not a historical reference lol but it got me thinking) that Portia commited suicide by eating hot coals. I thought this was rediculous, but then I thought "would they really do it that way?" I mean, was it considered a greater honor to end one's own life painfully rather than to quietly bleed to death?
  19. Quite possible. I described something of this nature (or tried to) but I had no clue what it was called really. I've seen them before somewhere, just not quite as viscious looking as this
  20. I've noticed it's slower than other sites, but considering I have dialup and everything is slow, I didn't pay too much attention.
  21. Do you want actual, proper "ancient" pronounciation or modern pronounciation? In most cases, the two are very different (for instance modern Julius Caesar=ancient "yoo-lee-oos kah-hee-zah")
  22. I also don't find it odd...nor do I think you should have to be in the navy to have one. You just have to be weighted down very well so that you don't wash up on a beach somewhere...because that would be icky...
