  1. So, yesterday was my eighteenth birthday. Officially an adult. Wow...kind of a smack in the face lol. I got my drivers license yesterday, on my eighteenth birthday and hid the fact that I was taking my test from my mom, so I could surprise my entire family with the news. I was going to wait 'till we were at the restaurant to tell them, but they took their jolly good time in us leaving and so I told them all while we were still at my house. Probably a good thing, because the way they reacted (screaming and jumping up and down and laughing) would probably have caused quite a scene I almost didn't pass the test actually, because I almost hit the curb on the way out of the parking space (and on practice driving before that I completely missed a "lane ends" sign...oh, what nerves will do to me ). But I did pass, with a little help from the Gods and all is well...I made offering of crackers with honey and milk as soon as I got home and my family departed (we don't have any wine in the house or I'd have given that, but crackers with honey seemed fitting). My dad had flowers delivered (which was a huge surprise for me) and my mom gave me more art supplies. My grandma made me a blanket and the gift that means the most to me is a diamond ring given me by my grandma. My grandfather had given her the ring and I had been obsessed with it when I was a little girl. I had always stared at it, turning it on her hand to see the way the light sparkled off of the stones and she told me "it'll be yours someday". She pulled the box out of her purse and gave it to me, she told me "this isn't a birthday gift it's just something I wanted you to have" with tears in her eyes...it was the beautiful diamond ring I'd been obsessed with for so long. I had always admired it even to this day though I was no longer nearly so obsessed as I once was, but she never forgot her promise to that little girl... The other night my neighbor surprised me with a job offering, he wants me to tutor his daughter for somewhere around $50 a week (not bad, eh?) I'm happy about having the job, but I'm not happy that it's necessary...because his daughter (my friend) is doing very badly in school which is why I now have the job
  2. Actually, I adore cabbage and I see nothing really funny about that. I don't know how well it works, however maybe i'll let you know on my 21st birthday.
  3. Palm reading is done more with the lines on the hands, although you're right, environment does have an effect. Most palm readers that you see in little shops and such are in it for money anyway, if they were really psychic they probably wouldn't be in that line of work lol. Numerology seems to be more reliable, just for "kicks and giggles" I did my numerology, and I was really surprised with the (shockingly accurate) outcome.

    Roman Keys

Wow! Those are quite funny looking! I'm guessing they fit into the slots in the lock? Though, the angle seems quite awkward. How was the lock mounted so that the one trying to open the door would be able to get the key in there?
  5. Ah, I can't really tell how the keys work, but it seems to me that it wouldn't take much to stick one's fingers in and move the slats without a key, that is the major weakness I see (but never having been face to face with a lock such as this I haven't ever tried it, there may be some trick that makes such an effort impossible). I suppose also the originals were a bit better made than that reproduction, the wood piece on the front would be a bit thicker and less easily broken/ripped off. [edit] I just noticed (well had pointed out to me) the small piece that would keep the wood in place, even if the front piece were ripped off. Sly Romans!
  6. That makes sense, but wouldn't it be very easy to break/pick?
  7. Oh, I see. Thanks for the info to get this a bit back to topic (after I so convieniently got it off topic) was there any sort of ceremony for getting paid in the Roman army? Or was it simply "get your cash, then go do whatever the....you want with it"

    roman lock

Do you know how it worked?
  9. It's a Vermillion Flycatcher (at the time of posting the image I had forgotten what it was lol)
  10. Oh, oops...my (Latin is) bad...I'd better work on that Latin! Soldat is also the German word for soldier. Can you explain the "'Touche la solde'" to me? Besides the translation, was it simply used as a figure of speech or did it imply some sort of ceremony?
  11. Oh I did not know that was there. Thank you! I see no mention of the sesterces I guess they are a product of the authors imagination?
  12. I've read and heard about different Roman monetary units (denarii, as, recently sesterces) however I was never able to figure out how the system was set up, IE how many sesterces in a denari (or denari in a sesterce) etc. Also, did each province have it's own currency or were they all somehow standardized? Was currency from other nations also useable in Rome, or was there an exchange of some sort?
  13. These are two different kinds of hummingbirds, I forget which kinds however they are not the kinds native to where I live (unfortunately )
  14. I love this guy
  15. I finished this one a long time ago, however the photo I got of it was so bad that I couldn't post it and it's been this long before I got a good photo.
  16. Is that related to other forms of Geranium? Or is Geranium simply a word meaning "Herb"?
  17. I use Google. I hate yahoo their services are bad anymore. My mom lost a very important email this morning (that took her 2 hours to write) because of a "confirmation code" (those pics that you have to read but cant?) that is now required to send an email with yahoo.
  18. OK lmao I finally got it worked out. Get this... I thought I would like to have a chat for Ancient History, so after trying a hundred times to find a server (none of which Trillian would connect to) I stumbled upon BrokenIRC and thought it would be funny if "BrokenIRC" was the only one that wasn't "broken" so I tried it. What do you know, it works. Isn't irony grand? So I join the help channel, get some great help from an admin there in setting up my channel step by step. I had some problems with figuring out the different commands on Trillian, but I got the hang of it. I get offline to get some lunch, get back online, and I can't get my Ops (I have no control over my own channel in other words) I DL mIRC but it turns out its only free for 30 days, no good. So I try IceChat which won't connect to my server. I try Visual IRC which keeps freezing and after two restarts I finally get connected-with the same problem as Trillian. I reconnect and try identifying with nickserv THEN joining the channel and voila! I am operator again! Then I think hey, wait a minute! I go back to Trillian and try the same thing and what do you know, I just wasted an hour trying to fix something that wasn't broke! I feel so stupid... The channel is working well now. And it does indeed work with Trillian. My only regret is I couldn't get a Centurion bot (I have Guard bot instead) I posted the channel info on the forum but here it is again: Server: BrokenIRC irc.brokenirc.net Channel: #AncientHistory
  19. I figured out the problem with Trillian. Have to identify with NickServ FIRST, then join the channel. i figure this out after DLing 3 programs that dont work.
  20. Pretty much like any incense I suppose. If that's a tiny amount the stuff must not be very dense, or else the camara was very zoomed in lol. Does it at least have a good odor? My neighbors seem to like to burn odd things...various forms of trash...at odd times and it isn't very pleasant. I hope this is better
  21. Finally, after much searching, I have found a server that works with Trillian (ironically its BrokenIRC) server BrokenIRC irc.brokenirc.net Channel #AncientHistory Don't mind "Guard" he's just a bot to keep the channel open and running smoothly Enjoy!! (this is what I do when i'm bored lol)
  22. Oh, I see ::laughs:: well yes, it is a clumsy effort. Thanks for the info!
