  1. I noticed a "homepage quirk" at school but that may just be the school comps...seems it opened a "download" dialogue box every time I tried to view the page...I don't know about now though as I don't go to the homepage I go directly to the forum. It's much faster now which I'm quite glad to see P.S. I use firefox and I did not have that error that Pertinax spoke of, so it must be fixed by now.
  2. EEEE I WANNA GO THERE!! It's SO cold here....
  3. lol yea...you should have seen my first time driving! Thanks!
  4. Same here, I really don't think that was an effective measure. It was believed to be effective, but a misguided effort.
  5. According to Roman law, the testimony of a slave was not legal to be used in court UNLESS it had been obtained through torture.
  6. Ah, I see, so they *had* thought of that. I thought I was going crazy for a minute there, wondering how exactly that worked.
  7. ::pouts:: you're lucky. I could go for some good Roman wine XD
  8. If you have trillian, you can use that. My server does not have a web chatroom, so as far as I know you use a program. Some use mIRC however it is only free for 30 days then you have to pay $20 for it. If this is ok with you, it is supposed to be a very good program. There are several other programs you can use, however I'll tell you don't even bother with IceChat because it does not appear to be able to connect to my server. Visual IRC is supposed to be good, however it froze my computer a bunch of times. I'm sure someone else can recommend a good one, I just use Trillian it is free and effective (it also does AIM MSN YIM and ICQ though ICQ never stays connected for me.)
  9. I've read that the "oven men" gained their name by the extreme temperatures endured under all of that heavy armor... Ah so it was the enemies of Rome? Were they ever used by Rome herself as perhaps auxiliaries?
  10. I read in a book on the Roman military (I'd have to look up the book again now as it is not a part of my collection) about a section of Roman cavalry jokingy called "oven men" (possibly cataphracti) because of their heavy armor. They wore tall pointed helmets and heavy chainmail armor, causing them to resemble a giant chainmail starfish somewhat (at least in the picture offered in the book) and their horses were very heavily armored. I have not seen them in any other book however, and I was wondering if anyone here knew any more about them?
  11. Awesome! Let us know how it goes! Yarrow and foxglove grow wild around here, and comfrey can be found "escaped" (not wild, but getting there) in some places.
  12. Makes sense. What were they armored with? A type of chainmail? Or metal plates?
  13. I've never heard of that before, in some small way it seems logical though likely to be urban legend. I don't know if they really existed but it would be really cool if they did!
  14. I didn't think of that spitting in your hands thing...I honestly hadn't paid much attention to that old tradition...it's something I never did. I'm not surprised that mercury was once used for innoculations, I'm a bit surprised that in some places it is still done. I would think people would know better.
  15. That does make sense, in a way. In India when a baby is born the first thing they do is spit in it's mouth. Though there are DEFINITELY better ways of immunizing ::shudders:: then that.
  16. What I can't understand about the Roman siege tower, is how come the defending army let the thing get close enough to actually serve any purpose? I mean, think about it. It was built of wood, right? If I were standing up on a fortress wall watching this thing come at me the first thing I would do would be shoot some flaming arrows into it. Did the Romans have some sort of defense against this?
  17. Some work was done on the server and the new bot is called Cerberus. Don't let him scare you [edit] Guard is back and everything should be back to normal. Come on over guys, I'm in the channel whenever I'm online (and tell your Romanophile friends)
  18. I was born in 88 so I missed those laws. I don't remember how many hours I had to have I think it was 60 or something. I know I got way more than that though.
  19. EWWW that is so disgusting! How about using the sweat of gladiators as an aphrodisiac? The blood of gladiators was also used in various medicines.
  20. I'm a woman lol...I know, I use a rather non gender specific name (I couldn't think of a good latin name when I signed up and everyone knows me as this so why change now?) Yea, I can vote, lol and as my uncle said "if you get locked up now, it's for real" not that I plan on getting locked up LOL. I don't think it'll take five years to pass your drivers test. It took me 2 years to get around to TAKING my drivers test, but I passed it on the first try.
  21. I didn't get my picture taken yet. I took the test at the school, so I have to wait till I get the photo card in the mail, then I have to go to get my picture taken. I hope I don't look any more psychotic than I actually am
