Standard Training
Lost_Warrior replied to Dominus Rex's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
I really don't know. I remember reading somewhere about marching 20 miles (Roman miles, don't ask me for a conversion. I think it was close to 18 American miles) a day, which could be accomplished in 5 hours. They also took occasionaly 30 mile "pack marches" in which they carried at least 50 pounds of kit with them. As for fighting, they trained with wooden swords (attacking "dummies" (posts wrapped in...cloth or something) was one of the things they did) and also they trained with pila (usually wooden versions). I've read that they trained with weapons (wooden swords and wicker shields) which were twice the weight of the real ones, with the idea that if they could handle the heavy version they could definitely handle the lighter version easily. My personal opinion is that they would want as close a reproduction of the "real thing" as possible so that in battle they would be fighting with something that handled the same as their practice weapons. They also did formation drills and such. One source stated that they used a "two days on, one day off" schedule...something like this: the first day was training, and maybe the second day as well, then the third day was spent cleaning weapons and resting"...repeat...etc. That's all the knowledge on the subject I can scrounge out of my brain for the moment. Hope it helps. -
God: Jupiter Goddess: Athena/Minerva (I know the two are often equated...not sure if they are one in the same honestly I think Athena was strictly Greek and Minerva was Roman)

Well last night was prom, nothing really exceptional but I had a good time. And nothing disastrous happened either. The only disaster, was some of the food, something unidentifiable that I think was pork, and some green beans that smelled, seriously, like that really stinky kind of plastic and tasted similar. The strawberry shortcake was to die for though. I have the responsibility of watching the neighbors dogs for the weekend, and I went to their house yesterday morning to find the kitchen full of gas The pilot lights on thier stove had gone out. I had no clue what to do about it thank Gods "Uncle Frank" was home, he always knows what to do Watching the dogs is no big deal but it included staying at their house for the night as the really personable dogs (who didn't like when it got dark and they were alone, they left a "present" on the floor) don't like to sleep alone. I watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail again, and tried to crash on their couch. Except, have you ever tried to sleep with a Shi Tzu on your chest? yea. Suzy has a habit of walking all over you when you try to sleep. I woke up, with Little Bear at my feet and Suzy about 2 inches from my face, staring at me. I'm glad to be back in my own house. I was wishing I were in my own bed last night. My favorite TV shows are on tonight! I hope my neighbors get back by then so I don't have to stay over there (I'm not going to have to stay the night but I kinda want to be *here* this afternoon. No idea when they are getting back except that my friend will be back from...wherever she is...by nine)

Well I had my first AP exam today. English. It was an hour of multiple choice (55 questions and a whole hour to do it. I had 10 minutes to spare) and two hours in which to write three essays, preferrably 5 paragraphs each. GAH. It really wasn't THAT bad. Although after working for an entire year on a college level course (if I pass this exam, and then later go to college, I won't have to take the corresponding English course. It's a high school class for college credit) two girls decided to exchange papers. Now this exam is *locked down*. By even reavealing any of the multiple choice questions after taking it, even to our teacher, we may forfeit our scores. The exam has to be taken at the same time, by everyone in the country. If it is not given on a certain day, between the hours of 8 and 9 AM (or later in Alaska) the test is not valid (technically). So these girls, who may or may not have been trying to cheat (they said the writing they showed each other wasn't about the test but I don't know. I didn't see it) forfeited their scores after a year of work in this course. I cannot believe, they would do anything so stupid, but they did. and one of them was actually crying about it (of course, they deserved it if they were doing something so stupid. I certainly don't want anyone to cheat on this test and have an unfair advantage.) I have an AP chem exam next week. I have to actually get out of class to take practice tests. Which is a real bear because I need some of that time to do other things which need to be done before next Thursday, and it's not something I can work on at home either My brain, is fried. I seriously can't feel my head My prom is saturday night, i'll be sure to let you all know how that goes. I hope its not a complete disaster

I've heard it suggested (was it someone here who said it? I can't remember it's been too long) that Caligula tried to get his horse the position of consul because he was angry with the other Consuls, and was trying to make a point that his horse could do a better job then they, currently, were doing.

OOO That looks like what my family calls "sweet clover" except that "sweet clover" has little yellow flowers that are decidedly un clover like. I suspect "sweet clover" is not the correct name, as it is not sweet and about the only thing it has in common with a clover is that it has three leaves The leaves are identical to that. It's quite tasty, I've been known to just pluck it off of the ground and eat it. It tastes great if you are thirsty too I will try to get a pic of "sweet clover" if I can find any on my property, I doubt I'll find any blooming though we have lots of the stuff (usually blooms a bit later than this and stays blooming all summer pretty much.) -

Thumbless Soldiers
Lost_Warrior replied to Emperor Goblinus's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
You wouldnt be able to cut the thumb off *so* completely that there wasn't any little divit there. And again, wrist strap. A *normal* bow would be difficult, yes. But it would be possible to adapt it (even by strapping it to one's hand) very easily. It'd be much easier to adapt a bow to a thumbless man, than to adapt a sword. ALSO (and I didn't think of this before) a man looking to avoid military service would have likely cut off his right thumb (left thumbs aren't needed as much in the military as right ones, and would only cause a problem in holding a shield most likely). A bow is generally held in the left hand. Unless they cut off both thumbs, which I don't think they would have done, as it is even stupider than cutting off one or the other. (Besides being difficult to hold the hatchet without the one thumb that you already cut off ) -

OUCH!...I've been really lucky (not lucky, blessed) in that reguard that I've never actually had a muscle injury that caused *anything* but a few days stiffness (I pulled a...what is it...hamstring? a few days ago throwing a softball. Still stiff, but not particularly painful). I did have what I suspect was a stress fracture a while ago though, I didn't go to the doctor though. It took over a month to heal, it's fine now. I usually heal extremely fast (it's uncanny). Glad you're doing better though.

Good to have you back
