LOL yea I'm imagining what someone with Alzheimers would think. I mean, it's really not funny, but then again, it really is!
-
WHY did they do that?? Seriously. It's not neccesary with modern latrines, why was it neccesary then?

When Ouija Boards Go Horribly Wrong

Wow this is really interesting. Lol it stands to reason that Romans would suspect anything political. Especially during the Empire (at some times more than others of course.) -

Legio Viii And Deva Victrix (part One) Intro
Lost_Warrior commented on Pertinax's blog entry in The Triclinium
Sounds like fun! I love that sort of thing. That and Ren faires. -
We figured something out...the Greek/Roman "peplos"...my mom is making me one (she's quite the seamstress and loves odd clothing). Maybe I'll put a picture up somewhere of some of the things she's made me. I'm wearing a silk "Roman style" tunic right now with neat gold stitching around it. quite comfortable! I find out that's actually what she meant when she said "toga" anyhow. Silly mother

I'm reading Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow (review coming soon!) and they made mention of "latrine duty" which basically entailed...standing in crap and scrubbing out the inside of the latrine...did they really do this? I mean, maybe as a really grotesque punishment or something, but regularly? How gross is that??

Oh wow. Thanks for the info guys! Where did they draw the line between "good priestly doings" (such as auspices and that) and "sorcery"? -

I thought Romans had nothing against magic or "sorcery"? Or was this at a later time (after the arrival of Christianity)? -
I've read that women got fed up with the restrictions of dress and started wearing bright colors, but other than that, I don't know of any "feminist movement".

Lol everyone in my family drives Ford though. Fat chance getting anything else. My grandad will only buy Ford, my mom drives a Ford (also likes Volkswagen, those are good cars) and my dad has several Fords. I wanted a Pontiac. I hear they are high maintanance though. Chevys aren't bad either, I've driven them and I like them, but my grandad won't hear of it. You know, its funny. There are two "gangs" in Sullivan County (where I live): Ford, and Chevy. If you express a preference for either one, there will be a fight. With the exception of my dad's pickup, though, and a Windstar one of our friends had, I've never heard of much problems with Ford. I rather like them. My mom's 91 Explorer (called an "exploder" by those who drive them) would climb a tree as long as there was snow on it.

Thanks, I'll pass that on to my grandad. He's decided that's what I will have lol... My mom yelled at me when I just told her what you said. "How can you believe that?? When somebody else is buying it and that's what they want to buy you..." I'm talking to my grandad right now and he says that everyone he knows who has them absolutely loves them and hasn't had problems. He also says theres alot of problems with 2001 because its the first year they were made.

OMG, I just got an email from my aunt, my cousin Jennifer Founds (my little Jenny!!) has just started singing professionally, and will be touring soon. Jenny is such an AMAZING singer, a good actress and I hear is getting good on a guitar to. I AM SO PROUD of my little Jenny (now not so little anymore). I LOVE HER SO MUCH!! I can't wait to see her!!! My mom and I just got back from shopping, we figured out what we are going to do for under my graduation gown, one of those dresses like the Roman women wore (or what they may have worn. As my mom says, "what the Vestal Virgins wear in all the movies". I think it's called a Pella?). My mom is an awesome maker of weird clothes, I have a knitted "legionary tunic" now (I'm serious. LOL it does actually look really awesome). She's going to make it. I also found this most amazing dress (almost in the same style but it's navy blue) at a thrift store, for $6. I just HAD TO HAVE IT it fits perfectly. We had another bomb scare at school on thursday (second one in two weeks) they made us go home without all of our stuff. Andy found a baby bird though, it couldn't open its eyes but otherwise it seems quite healthy and SO cute. Odessa took it home. She named it "Stick". They then locked all the bathrooms except for one (the bomb threats were written on the bathroom walls.) and students now have to go in one at a time, sign in to the bathroom, and the stalls are checked after you leave My grandad is actively seeking a Ford Escape for me

Or listen to ALL that the spirits have to tell you, not just half of it. LOL -
Is there any record of what specific signs the Augurs took to be auspicious, or inauspicious? I know much of it was at one point laid out in the Syballine books, however they were unfortunately destroyed. The only specific information I have is a scrap from a biography of Caesar: that as Caesar was leading his men into battle a black bird flew overhead and the men refused to fight.
-
It goes without saying that Shakespeare took a great deal of liberties with Caesar's funeral oration, but I was wondering, did Brutus actually ever give an oration at Caesar's funeral?

Ok, I got a piece of fabric long enough, but how does your description not leave the whole left side open? lol I need pictures! (I'll google it I love google) It can't be nearly as impractical as trying to drive in an Irish walking cape.
-
lol WOW I had no clue how huge they actually were. I'm not sure how they managed to even keep the thing on/move lol. I'll try that though. Thanks for the info! I promise, I will NOT wear plaid, and tie it in a big knot a'la Animal House or my tenth grade english class I'm not entirely sure what it will look like either, to be honest, part of my reasoning is to annoy the school officials who decided that girls were to wear a dress or skirt (well as long as it isn't pants. They'll throw a fit about pants) and the boys were to wear a suit and tie. Everyone (in my English class at least) is a bit peeved, and we've actually got one guy planning to wear his Scottish garb (this means a kilt). (A good number of us decided that if the girls had to wear dresses, the boys should have to also).
-
Ok, so I need to wear a skirt or dress for graduation, unfortunately our gowns are white, my skirts are black, and white skirts are hard to find. So my mom came up with the brilliant (teehee) idea to wear a toga under the gown. But how do I make one? And how do I "tie" it? (i know it isn't actually tied)

I wouldn't doubt that she had relations with a LOT of men, that seems to have been the fashion of many aristocratic Roman women. I think the number 80,000 is most certainly an exhaggeration. As for the exile, I'm not sure whether that actually happened or not. It might have.

Great job Ursus!! What are the differences between Minerva and Athena? Were the differnt names of Minerva, Minerva Medica for example, considered different dieties from other "Minervas"?
-
I know the Romans didn't have "corn" as we know it, but I'm sure they had something comparable. Does anyone know of a recipe that can be adapted to regular old grits? My mom bought some and we're not sure of an interesting way to cook it.
