  1. Clove is actually a great pain reliever (my mom is a huge fan of clove oil for a toothache) however the results aren't very long lasting as far as I know, and something so bad as having a piece of hot lead jammed in your mouth probably would not get much lasting relief from clove.
  2. There is one HUGE difference between these two: Augustus had a little something called "common sense"
  3. If this is what I saw on TV earlier, I'm not sure the explosion was entirely the guys fault. I mean, it was clearly his fault but I don't know that he planned such a massive explosion. There seems to have been a gas leak in the building of which he could have been unaware... Still, there are much better ways to commit suicide than THAT. Or, if you must blow yourself up, have the common decency to do it outside away from people, or, failing that, an old abandoned warehouse which is going to be torn down anyway.
  4. Actually Favonius I agree with you completely Except for the elephant's ass part. Can't we be something cute? Like a squirrel burr on something cute like a deer?

    Area Denial

Awesome shot! I can see how a row of these could be very problematic for an enemy Much fun
  6. I don't know specifics on this but it seems to me morphine makes your brain make certain chemicals that act as pain relievers. Your brain thinks you are getting morphine, and makes the chemicals anyway. The "mophine blocking substance" probably blocks these chemicals that are made by the brain somehow. Or maybe not. Just speculating there.
  7. LOL I got into an argument with the guy I mentioned in the "gladius" thread over whether a shield was armor, or a weapon (his stance, the shield was armor. My stance, it is a "defensive weapon". Just look at how many people got cracked up alongside the head with a shield for proof ) Oh yea, he also thought it was impossible to cut through chainmail (unless using a stilletto or such). I'll have to find the picture in Musem Replicas of a broadsword being used to slash through chainmail I'm not knocking the SCA in any way. Just this particular guy
  8. And chain has the disadvantage of being heavy >.<

    Gladius position

Another awesome shot! Do you know the ranks of the men with the (front to back) crests? I would think Optio, but as far as I know there's only supposed to be one optio
  10. lol yea. I'm with you on that one Gaius. It is fun to argue about occasionally though

    Phalerae

Those are beautiful! Man I can't wait until I can collect all this stuff
  12. Lol I can believe it. It looks difficult to get your hand in the right position, but really I don't think it would be that hard to draw the weapon. Actually, an added benefit to having it positioned that high is that it doesn't get caught around your legs as easily (a sword getting caught around your legs, or when you are trying to sit down, or getting caught in the door, is a pain in the butt and would be terrible in battle) I actually got into an argument one time with a guy who thought you absolutely could not move in segmentata. It was so aweful it was never used outside of Rome. He would know, he's in the SCA.
  13. Oh, I can't imagine. I know how sensitive my teeth are sometimes to heat and cold.... Did they at least use some anesthesia or something?
  14. OH, lol I got'cha I think "no time" wouldn't be a major concern as I'd imagine any medicus would simply rip the pants up the leg. It would take about two seconds, they must've gotten good at it
  15. oh, ow....jeez...wouldn't that cause infection or something? >.<
  16. Not that it wouldn't hurt like a *&@#, but I'm glad to see the pliers have nice smooth, rounded points. They do considerably less damage going in than oh, say, needlenose
  17. That's really cool. I didn't know they did this sort of thing at reinactments to Do you know why they didn't remove the wounded man's pant leg before trying to get the bullet out? (and for that matter, why is the poor guy wearing sweatpants? )

    Scutum detail

wi-fi palm top? lol I've never heard of that. I guess it must be kinda like a palm pilot That's awesome. I'd love to be able to make it my lifes work to hang out at reinactments and take pictures
  19. Like this? (sig of "the founder" on a forum I'm on)
  20. Oh lol when I said that I was talking about the guy on the table But yes, I can imagine life as a combat surgeon would be rough, both physically and mentally. And also more than a little icky

    Scutum detail

That's very interesting, I thought they were larger than that. Dude are you at this reenactment now?? If so, how are you on the internet?
  22. It seems to me that it's a physical impossibility for everything to just end. Maybe there is no matter beyond the edges, but there is empty space, and empty space is *something*, it takes up space. Unless you define universe as neccesarily containing matter.
  23. Just thinking about the "fist grip" makes me get tired lol. But then, I've never trained with a scutum. I was under the empression that...scutums (scuta?)...had a recessed or "cut out" area behind the little bar thingy, where the boss stuck out several inches, which would allow for several different grips. (I really am more intelligient than that last sentence makes me seem. Honest. )

    Architectus

Oh, I did not even see the abacus lol it's so tiny in the pic it kind of resembles a dirty old circuit board! Of course a circuit board has no place in the office of a Roman Architectus, so I was truely confused.
