  1. I really do have to find time to get to see these places
  2. How did I miss all of these gorgeous images? Somehow I missed this one too...
  3. I can't believe I'm only just seeing this now! It's beautiful!

Oh, bamboo is nasty ::grins:: it's also used for some staves. It's light weight (compared to most woods) and extremely durable. (My staff is hardwood of some variety, and very heavy.) The broken knuckles usually happen in TKD because of punching improperly (you punch someone's hogu (body armor) the wrong way and you can break your hand). The bruises still happen, especially since for some reason someone's pointy elbow always manages to find its way to your foot tendons (that really hurts). I haven't had any particularly nasty injuries myself, only bruises and bruised tendons or muscles. I did break a guy's jaw though.

I don't think I could stand that, I can't handle having my face covered by something like that. The simple chin-strap on my TKD helmet drove me nuts, I gagged a couple times because of it.

I would think the cheekbones wouldn't be as much of a problem as the nose and chin
  7. That's me

It looks uncomfortable. TKD helmets were just thick foam, with holes in them. Most of them left the face open.

Luke...I am your father...ahem...sorry Was the helmet full metal, or was the back fabric or something? TKD sparring gear has a habit of making you look like an overstuffed turtle.
  10. Of course. But you didn't become a Centurion by hiding you got that post through display of valor, among other things.
  11. I know, aren't they awesome? They were made to look like that for a few reasons. First off, they wanted to appear intimidating both in battle and to their own troops, as it helped them to gain the respect, or fear, of their men. Secondly, it made them appear authoritative. And third, the large (red? or other colors depending on the depiction you see) crest made it easy to find your Centurion on the battlefield.
  12. lol thanks, I'm really enjoying this job actually. Not enjoying getting up at 4:30 AM but my coworkers are really nice and we have a lot of fun.

Great shot Pertinax! He's pretty scary alright. But he doesn't look as mean as This guy.
  14. ah, I was looking at the nearby thing. Maybe those are the pillars of a pier or something. In black and white its actually hard to tell the difference between grass and water
  15. You're probably right, I didn't think of that.
  16. I see. I had read of helmets and armor going through family lines (wearing your dad's helmet for instance) but I didn't know where exactly the line was drawn. What about shields? Thanks for the info btw
  17. It looks like ruins of something.
  18. I see. I seem to remember seeing other reinactors with similar decorations, however I did not always see them and had not read or heard anything about the wristlets
  19. (no comment) hehehe Pertinax is that bracelet he's wearing also a symbol of his rank?
  20. Capricorn. Of course. lol I sort of guessed that after reading your comment on the legion's capricorn standard. I had figured that might be an auxiliary, were there any restrictions about the armor a soldier could wear? I mean, I know there was often alot of variation, some prefered hamata to segmentata or what have you, but what were the limits?
  21. 1. Thanks, I grew tired of the old one. This one is a fractal. 2. Was that Tacitus? I don't recall where I heard it. I think it was on this site somewhere. I noticed the unusual markings on the Centurion's shield, but I have no clue what they mean?
  22. What is this a photograph of, really?
  23. What are those animals on his sheild, do you know? I presume they are some sort of mythical beast, but from here they look like shrimp (and why would he have shrimp on his sheild? ) What rank is the man beside him with the lavishly decorated oval sheild? His armor itself does not suggest anything other than a "regular" legionary, however the sheild decoration does.
  24. Wasn't there a centurion nicknamed "fetch another" because he kept breaking his vine staff over soldiers' backs? Did he actually demonstrate this particular method of discipline? (Logically I would think "no" but then reenactors do some weird things sometimes in the name of authenticity )
