How Long before the USA Republic falls into Monarchy?
Lost_Warrior replied to spittle's topic in Hora Postilla Thermae
The government is slowly eating away at the ideals of the Constitution. The "beauty" of the Constitution is that it is so mutable. A double edged sword. And if the government decides to, they can simply through it out. It won't be popular, but if they all agree, or some use force, it can happen. The actual Constitution cannot fight back; only if it is upheld does it actually have power. How many of us follow the Twelve Tables today? -
So the other night my assistant manager dropped a bomshell on me: she wanted me to be the other assistant manager. After having come there with absolutely no experience in the field, and working for four months. To be honest, I'd have no idea what I was doing, even though I would get training. I'd be making (weekly) more than twice what I make now. At first, I agreed to do it. But the night before that, I was lying in bed thinking how miserable I might be. I decided that the pros outweighed the cons and agreed, and the district manager said he thought it was a good idea too. However, the next night, I lay awake again thinking about how miserable I will be. You see, every other week as assistant manager is night shift (and I've never done overnight). It's like, major swingshift. I don't handle going between afternoon and morning shift well, let alone that. I also barely have time for the things that are important to me now, let alone if I am working 50+ hours a week (on salary pay, and that's where they get to screw you). Today I broke down in tears thinking about the huge promotion which should have been a good thing. Though today was my day off, I went down to talk to the assistant manager about it. I decided not to take the job. If it's that much stress, even just thinking about doing the job, then it's totally not worth it. Deciding not to take it feels like a huge weight off of my chest. On a more positive note, I've managed to land three days off in a row next weekend, so I'm going to see the other half of my family who live four hours away. It'll be a rushed trip, but it's better than nothing, and so I'm glad. We'll have to get my aunt to rig the pollyanna, because I already got Jenny's gift and no one told me they were doing a pollyanna. Oh well, Patty is good at that . She'll probably rig it so she gets me, too.

That's stupid, lol. But then, if I were the librarian, I'd have bought the book myself -

I believe that is a big part of what the aquaducts were used for. I know they did it, but I'm not entirely sure how.

Perhaps? -
That would probably depend on the time period. I believe that the baths did not cost much, however, that is relative to how much you have. Chances are, the very poor did not go to the baths perhaps except on special occasions, or when it was free. Oftentimes, though, Imperators would make the baths free for everyone. As a sign of his magnamity (did I spell that right?) he would agree to "pick up the tab" for everyone who wished to visit the baths.

Gah, darnit, I thought I was going to actually beat someone to the happy birthday post. Then I saw this one. Very happy birthday to Pertinax. Try not to get into too much trouble

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your comments! I will make an effort to update the blog at least once a week, probably more, sometimes less. (I do not want to "force it" when I am uninspired, but there are a million essays that I could write lol) [edit to add] I don't focus on the historical and academic side, so some of my beliefs will probably seem a little "off" from that point of view. To me, it's all personal, and usually very deeply emotional.

Um...I doubt it. That sounds like your standard rumor that gets thrown around about emporers after (or before) their deaths. Nero was a very "contraversial" emporer, so the stories about him are even more greatly exhadgerated.

Thank you

Roman treatment of migraine headaches

Pertinax, does that mean that peach-pit jelly is poisonous? -
::glances around this poor, neglected catagory:: Just yesterday I have started a blog for various religious essays. This will not be for "everyday stuff", but only for things about my personal path. I had started out with the intention of "starting a religion" but I realized that by believing as I do, and practicing as I do, I am effectively creating the path simply by walking it. I was inspired by someone else's religious essays, and decided to write my own. I figure it will help me to learn more about myself, which is my intention. And it may prove entertaining or helpful to others, which is an added bonus My blog is here: Love, Hope and Life I was inspired by this blog: Flamekeeping

In the military they probably slept in their clothes (well, tunics). My completely uneducated guess would be that poorer individuals would sleep either in their clothes or in some sort of sleep-tunic for the reason Germanicus mentioned. The more well off who had better bedding may have slept in the nude (Romans definitely didn't have a huge problem with nudity!) or perhaps they just had better sleepwear. It would also depend alot on climate. I'm willing to bet that in the mountains, or in the colder regions, or in the winter, they were not sleeping nekkid. However, in the summer, in sweltering heat, with no air conditioning and very little wind, it's a very big possibility.

I've seen that hand shake, but I never thought there was anything specifically "Roman" about it.

Actually those little crescent moons are the symbol of the publisher, Lewellyn, a company rather notorious for the questionable content of its books. There are a few good witchcraft books out there that seem to have a good grasp on history, but as usual, they are no where to be found

Not sure why, but I like this guy. He's different. I think there ought to be more outside murals in cities. Heck, alot of those graffiti artist show astounding talent with those spraycans. I think we should put them to work beautifying the city, since they obviously love painting so much, instead of punishing them. It gives them something to do, and saves taxpayer money. The elephant one reminds me of Sandy Skoglund. Disturbing but cool. Radioactive Cats anyone?

I thought so. As my mom put it, Constantine fully converted only to "cover all his bases" for the afterlife

OO awesome site! I want to go!

I found this snippet in a book about witchcraft (NOT known for being great sources of historical truth, those books are). It stood out to me as being "something not right" although I don't actually know the correct course of events. (Besides that, the author has already made blatant factual mistakes elsewhere in the book.) From Advanced Witchcraft by Edain McCoy: My thoughts are, that the church was not split at this point. I had no idea that, at the time of the "first Christian emporer" there was ever even a Pope in Rome. I had been under the assumption that when Constantine converted to Christianity, all he did was encourage (or not) Christianity in Rome and end most of the persecution against Christians. [edited to add] I had thought that this should be in the Empire folder because it is about Constantine but on second glance, maybe it would be better in the Religion folder. If so, would someone kindly move it? Thanks
