Oh, my manager bought me this little thing, it's one of those "lottery calanders" (from the American Legion, which she's a member of) where if your number comes out on a certain day, you win a certain amount. It's for the whole month of December.

Well, I've finally, FINALLY gotten through that book I was reading (I spent several hours just reading on saturday). Now, finally, I get to start on the two Eagle books I have!! I don't expect them to take as long as the other one did. I found out last week that I won 50$ just by...doing nothing!! And I am getting a silver and lab-grown alexandrite ring for about 10$ (thanks Ebay!). I found my mom an awesome amethyst ring, and I know she will love it. Last night I wanted to get started reading but ended up watching my coworker's kid (which included kicking the other babysitter out...the other babysitter was happy enough to leave and I know she didn't know me, which pretty much explains why my coworker did not trust her). That was a pain, but I was happy to do it for a friend. Someone spoke to me yesterday, and recognized my septagram, and gave me her email. I gave her mine, too, and I'm hoping that she will contact me, because I lost her email addy somehow! I think I know where she lives and am thinking of leaving a (non-specific, incase its the wrong house!) note on her door if we don't come in contact again.

The fabled oak wreath!

What sort of artificial? I don't recall there being decorative "silk" flowers in ancient Rome? Perhaps they were made of real silk -
The fabled oak wreath!

The oak leaf crown (corona civica I believe) was awarded to a soldier who saved the life of another in battle. I believe it was given by one of the commanding officers. Anyone who recieved the corona civica recieved a great honor. They were required to wear the crown when appearing in public, or at public events. (which makes me wonder how they kept the crown fresh, still. Perhaps it gave them privilage to wear *a* oak leaf crown, and they kept making or were provided with fresh ones.) -
The absolute best angle of trajectory for any thrown or launched object (be it pillum, modern day javalin, slingshot, etc.) is 45 degrees. I have never thrown a pillum myself so I do not know at which angle it's actually being thrown or how it is done, however if it were thrown at a 60 degree angle it would shorten the distance that it can be thrown by quite a bit.

I've read mention of rings worn by Centurions as a symbol of office (most often they have an eagle design). A quick google search brings up several images of rings designed after what these officers' rings are supposed to look like. I've even seen a few which were supposed to be actual rings from the Roman Legions. My question is, did these things really exist? (I have alot of doubts about finding the "real deal" for sale on ebay, lol.) Is there any historical mention of rings being worn as symbols of office in the Legions?

A legionary's gladius. A centurion's ring (if in fact they wore one. I have read mention of it but I do not know if it is fact or fancy. Hm...interesting idea for a seperate thread actually)

Sulla is a fascinating character, but not one I particularly like. I'm unsure what I think of "who was the better of two bad apples" but I don't particularly care for either group. I can't really decide who would be more tolerable.

I actually think that was J LO in her now normal "I spent too much time in the tanning bed" state. Haha Britney lipsynched everything.

I'm glad to hear that she went peacefully. It has to happen sometime, and after all she has been through, I'm sure she is getting some well deserved rest in Elysium/Heaven. ::hugs::

Smoking ban in England
Lost_Warrior replied to Gaius Paulinus Maximus's topic in Hora Postilla Thermae
I'm convinced that second-hand smoke has affected me adversely because I grew up in a house with a LOT of cigarrette smoke. I mean, there was a perpetual blue cloud in the living room of my house. I could not get away from it. Now I can't stand to be around cigarrette smoke, because it burns my throat and nose. I have no problem with pipe smoke or cigars, so I think it's just all the junk that they put in cigs. I think that they ought to get rid of the nasty extras in cigs first of all. (besides, then everyone would smell better.) OMG I'm SO glad I am not the only one who didn't understand/hated that commercial. LOL The "this is your brain; this is your brain on drugs" one with the frying pan was kind of cool. I still think that the best antidrug slogan ever would be "Don't Poke Smot. It'll Brain Your Damage." -
Wishing there were more movies like A Knight's Tale, with rock music Gladiator Rock [fixed the link]

Smoking ban in England

I favor non-smoking *sections* of bars and resturaunts, however I don't think that banning smoking everywhere, in all public places, is a good idea. One thing that really bugs me is my mom still smoking in the house, even though she knows the smoke burns my throat and she had promised before never to smoke in the new house. I am at my dad's now, and when I put on my clothes last night, and today, I noticed that I indeed do smell like an ashtray. Apparently the smoke has permeated all of the laundry. -
12 bodyguards with you at all times? Wouldn't that get...you know, annoying after a while? I guess Roman aristocrats didn't care much about the practicality of their status symbols. This seems to contrast strongly with the classical Roman attitudes of practicality and logic. (One or two bodyguards, I can see. But 12??) Were there any cases of the Lictors becoming corrupted and actually "doing in" their master?

HAHA I did not catch that last line. It was a little blurry on the screen and I don't know latin.

This is the COOLEST Pepsi commerical I have yet seen. I wish it had made it to TV here. Maybe just because it combines my two loves, Queen's "We Will Rock You" with Ancient Rome (no, I did not mention Britney LOL)!!! I always thought of that song being an awesome backdrop to a gladiator clip, and here it is. I did not envision Britney spears and Pepsi, but what the hey, it works! Pepsi Commercial

Yep. I'm at my dad's again. He has DSL. This is kind of funny, and not too poorly done.

Well I kind of am...when I get mad at people, instead of hurting them like I want to, I hurt myself LOL. Yea, you probably didn't need to know that. But at the same time, you see I don't exactly handle stress well... I'm wondering now why I didn't apply at a place like JMB supply, or a hardware store, or something like that. Even being a security guard. My coworker used to be a security guard, and all he did was walk back and forth up and down the halls looking tough. Of course, that's easy for him. He's a typical "barbarian" (six + feet tall, long reddish hair and a frizzy red beard. And muscles out the ears LOL. And covered in tattoos. He's actually a really cool guy, but you'd think twice before messing with him.)

To be honest, I only ended up in the job I'm in because I was desperate. I was given till August to get a job, it was the last week of September, and no one had even given me an interview. It was the last place I wanted to work, and the last place I applied to. I found out (when I went to talk to the current assistant manager) that the other people there had been offered the position before. The woman who trained me responded with "Oh honey no, you don't want to do that!" and my other coworker told me that they had offered her the job as well and she basically told them to stick it. There's a reason why no one wants that job; and it isn't night shift. Mainly, it's getting paid for fifty hours of work but being required to do at least sixty, maybe a hundred hours...and double shifts (with no breaks), and getting called in in the middle of the night...for only about 50 cents more an hour than what I had been making as a shop girl, and I was only temporary summer help there. And to be honest I don't think it would have been healthy for me, as much as I like my job usually I'm finding myself increasingly on the verge of a nervous breakdown sometime in the middle of my shift. Since the current assistant's hair is falling out from stress, I think I'd really lose it.

I know too that I need to not be in retail, when I got this job I was desperate. Still, I enjoy it mostly, and I'm glad I have taken this job because I have met some good friends and made some connections while at work. I miss the job I used to have, at the shop. It was awesome, I basically just did my own thing, lol I worked on whatever menial task I was given and I was not disturbed. I started it and I finished it. I had lots of time to think as well. At the time I didn't have much to think about, but now I wish I had that time to think and mull things over again. When I was working there was when I did alot of my writing, and I had time to do things when I got home as well, and had weekends off. Looking back on it, it was perfect. Instead of crying at the thought of working, I cried on my last day because I did not want to leave.

That sounds yummy! The name is funny, but I'll bet it tastes better than it sounds.
