The Worst Punishments in History???
Lost_Warrior replied to spittle's topic in Historia in Universum
It would seem that, although possible, this would be a very rare occasion indeed. The body's reflexes are designed to keep us from getting hurt, such as in the case of pulling one's hand *out* of a fire involuntarily. -
This was posted by Randall on Ecauldron: Here is the original thread: http://www.ecauldron.net/forum/index.php?topic=172.0 I do not know if this is true or not, and I hope to the Gods it isn't. It would probably mean the end to the site which I've spent hours of my time on, as even though the host company might be able to enforce this, many of my members are barely 18ers or under. It could also spell doom to my blog I have worked so hard on if it causes Wordpress to shut down, and depending on where UNRV is hosted, it could go down to.

The Worst Punishments in History???
Lost_Warrior replied to spittle's topic in Historia in Universum
This isn't really an execution, but I can't imagine you wouldn't die from it: The Roman trick of forcing a condemned criminal to hold his hand in a brazier until it is burned away in the coliseum. (I can't imagine anyone could actually do that without some "help" in the form of someone holding his arm, or some drug.) As for the giraffe raping thing: I can't imagine this is anything but a myth, because, how on earth would you get a giraffe to rape someone? o.O although, if there was a way, the Romans would have figured it out!! Son of Poseidon, you forgot the infamous "flogging through the fleet": practiced in the British Royal Navy (I believe as punishment for mutiny, but I'm not sure), a condemned criminal was tied to a mast or stake and rowed in a small boat to every ship in the fleet, where he was given a prescribed number of lashes. The British fleets were at times quite large, and even if it only entailed ten lashes per ship, the numbers quickly added up. Men were reported to have been whipped so badly that their flesh hung off in strips, giving the appearance of blackened steak, and their ribs were showing. And, if by some miracle they survived that, they then had seawater thrown over them. Men on board the Royal Navy ships were flogged by the bo'sun (boat swain) and some captains boasted a left handed bo'sun who would "cross" the lashes of the previous ship's bo'sun. -
It was helpful so long as it went in favor of what the Imperator wanted. A lot of an Imperator's funds went towards keeping the people pacified ("bread and circuses") so that they wouldn't object too much to whatever it was that he wanted to do. If the Imperator wanted to do something, and the people didn't want it, he did it anyway and made the people pay the price for their dissent with secret police and the like.

Me too. Of course, I stayed up way too late last night and now I'm up kind of late. I've been trying to NOT sleep till noon on days when I have to work.

I got so much done today. I've no sign of the flu left, and the depression I had been sinking into has completely lifted. I have written a rather lengthy essay for Love, Hope and Life and I have added a few things to the Resources section of Hidden Worlds. I have also found a very nice skin for my blog, which is just what I was looking for (two columns, customizable header without getting rid of the blog subtitle; and it comes in colors that I love, with no weird symbols anywhere!) I'm in heaven... I'm actually feeling ready to go back to work tomorrow, so perhaps I'm still ill after all! But a lot of the issues recently plaguing me have been resolved, and I feel like I am able to tackle life again.

GO, if I had to eat a leech, I would much prefer a dried one. Powdered as well, hopefully, and mixed inconspicuously into some strong tasting food I cannot resist, like chocolate brownies. Here is more from my other blog:

That's good. I personally think that intestinal things are the worst. Around here salmonella is going around because of a batch of bad peanut butter. I know several people who have become very ill with it. That drink you mentioned sounds disgusting tasting though lol maybe not.

I'm feeling much better now, and I am enjoying my two days off from work. I am thinking of getting together with a few friends later. This week was interesting, but now it's over, and I'm glad. The other day I woke up feeling like I'd been dragged through a sick cow backwards, but once I got to work my health seemed to improve drastically, and I felt great yesterday; the only thing I have left is a bit of a cough and that is fading rapidly. I got a very pleasant surprise the other night; I'm having a huge disagreement (the details of which I will not go into) with some people on a forum that I used to be a regular on. It's several of us against the two "owners" of the forums, who are flat out wrong if not flat out lying, and it's infuriating. Most of us just left, but I and one friend of mine stuck around to try to "make them see the light" (BTW this almost never works, so I don't know why I try.) But the thing is, the one girl who has always been a bitch to me and my friend, and who I could never stand (I eventually just didn't give her any thought) started standing up to the two "owners" of the forum alongside my friend and I. I couldn't believe it. And I asked for her messenger info, she gave it to me in a private message, along with an apology for her bad behavior in the past! I nearly fell off my chair and died. Though to be honest, I probably deserved a lot of the things she's said to me, but not all of them.

Happy Birthday, L Quintus Sertorius!

Happy birthday! -
I am feeling much better today. I hope I can make it through my shift tonight though. My nose is itching, that's the worst thing.

My birthday dinner...sucked. We got to the restaurant to find a note on the door "As of Feb. 26 we will be closed on Mondays." Just my luck. It's nearly a forty minute drive to the next nearest eating spot, and I am carsick. Have been nauseous since an hour before leaving. Come home from dinner and am very dizzy, can't even sit up let along stand. I flip out at my mom for smoking in the house again, as it makes me sick and causes my throat to burn. She blames blood sugars. I blame the flu that's going around. I only worked three hours today, and that was because there was no one to cover for me until 5:30. I woke up this morning at 8:30 and couldn't stand to be in bed anymore...it seems to have gone directly into my chest. When I got to work I was feeling much better, but it got worse from there. By the end of my three hours I was about ready to drop; I was more than a little thankful for it to be over. I have to work tomorrow, and Saturday and Sunday too. I'm going to bed, hoping that I am well enough tomorrow to pull of a Friday shift without issue. Mom has taken to smoking in the basement but I can still smell the smoke; it's making my nose itch unbelievably. I do not understand how *anyone* can even consider liking those awful commercial cigs. My schedule doesn't suck so much this week. Three more days and I get two days off in a row. YAY! I'm hoping I will be well by then; the only thing worse than having to work when you're sick, is suffering through your days off with the flu. I'm feeling :stretcher:. I would like to be :drunk:.

You don't sound the least bit strange to me. Congratulations. Welcome Home.

Legionaire Questions
Lost_Warrior replied to Septimus Flavius Galarius's topic in Gloria Exercitus - 'Glory of the Army'
I can't imagine the general thought would be "he messed up and deserved to die". If you think about it, comrades in war are like family, in fact their mates in the legion were sometimes the only family they had left. I can't imagine anyone saying of their "brother" "Oh, he deserved to die." I don't know what the general populace thought exactly, although I imagine they honored their fallen soldiers just like most other cultures. I seem to remember reading somewhere that "it was an honor to die on Mars' field". -
If they tied me down and blindfolded me....

Roman Sceptre I wonder why more of these weren't found? I'd like to see a Roman Aquila standard. AFAIK none of those have been found either.

EWWW the infamous "maggot treatment". >.< Of course it makes perfect sense. I could never bring myself to do it. EW EW EW EW EWWWWW!!!

I would go with over the shoulder. Simply because I would be far more likely to trust an ancient source on ancient ways than a 19th century historian. Also, there is pictoral evidence to support the stripe going over the shoulder. Is there any evidence to support the stripe going down the center from an ancient source?
-
I actually didn't notice that part, because I was too busy looking at the pic. LOL
-
I would LOVE to have horses and ride them. I can't afford either though, sadly.
-
LOL!!! BTW GO I love your new sig!
-
A horsey type? What do you mean by that? Lol Antiochus, I don't drink. I'll very, rarely, have glass of wine with dinner. Today didn't suck, but I'm glad to be home from work lol.

So far, so good. Of course, I have to go to work later, but that hopefully won't suck. The one thing that pissed me off yesterday was my coworker bitching at me for not filling the coffee cup lids. Now, last night, we really WERE busy, plus I couldn't find the lids. Not only that, it's not my job. And though I usually do it, she says that I *never* do it. Despite the fact that I do it, despite it actually being deli responsibility (and has been for some months). So she's bitching at me for NOT doing something that I DO, even though I'm not supposed to. She gripes so much anymore, I don't know what her problem is. I told her to leave me the hell alone as I walked out the door. I got a wonderful little surprise in my drawer yesterday, a *Greek* coin! The woman tried to give it to me thinking it was a fifty cent piece. I told her I couldn't accept it, but on closer inspection I went "holy crap! It's Greek!" She let me buy it off of her for a quarter, which I did and tucked it in my pocket. My mom gifted me with a stunning mozambique garnet ring. It was hand made in Isreal. I love Ebay. These garnets are very oddly cut, I've never seen a stone cut like this but it's amazing, and the color is just glorious!

Thanks guys!! I'm of course working tomorrow (Saturday AND my birthday. Boo. Hiss.) but I'll try to have fun anyway.
