I do have 512 megs of RAM. Will changing those settings cause any further damage to it though? I have a 200 Gig hard drive. Lol my new beast will only have 80 Gigs but I'm currently only using 10 Gigs anyway.

Q: How many Centurions does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Two. One to beat the bulb into submission and one to find a new (not shattered) bulb. --------------------------------------------- Q: How many Imperators does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Six. One to rearrange the calender to include a Screwing in of the Light Bulb festival, one to collect taxes to pay for the Screwing in of the Light Bulb festival, one to commission the building of a new arena for the Light Bulb festival, one to requisition exotic animals and gladiators for the Light Bulb festival, one to advertise and send out invitations for the Light Bulb festival, and one to organize the Light Bulb parade. The Imperator's wife has to point out that it is now the day of the Light Bulb Festival and they have forgotten to acquire the light bulb. The festival is postponed for a month while the Imperator's top politicians work together to make up a story and deliver a speech as to why the festival had to be put off, and a light bulb is found, but by this point all of the resources originally collected have been spent so the process has to start all over. -------------------------------------- Ok, this one is Greek: Q: How many Olympians does it take to screw in a light bulb? A: Only one, but Eris had to go and start another meaningless competition among them to decide who was best suited to change the light bulb. She's started another war amongst mortals, but Paris of Troy decided to stay out of it this time. Last time I checked, they were still fighting and to put an end to it, Hermes just snuck in and changed the bulb while no one was looking.

Really looking forward to the new beast. This thing crashed again this morning, and ran dskchk on itself when restarting, saying there were errors. All sorts of things then it blue screened on me while running a virus scan.
-
I figure it hasn't completely croaked as long as it starts up. LOL I hope I can get my art programs to work with Vista. It's not likely, unfortunately. :'(

My new comp is on its way from Dell. I'm going to lie low until it gets here, because I don't want to be completely without a computer.
-
I did a dskchk on drive D and it didn't seem to find any errors. But right before that I got some "data write error" possibly caused by a hardware failure, or an internet connection problem followed by freezing and a "black screen of death" upon trying to restart. Every time this happens it seems like Firefox is trying to upgrade. Is it a possible/known Firefox problem? Or could it be our phone lines? Because the phone was being screwy too when I tried to call Dell.

I love Oedipus Rex. My favorite, though, has to be The Irish Ballad. It's traditional in my family. We were singing it at Christmas dinner.
-
OK, I did the C drive and I don't think there were any errors to fix (it took over an hour though, I wasn't staring at it the whole time.) I'm going to wait to do the D drive because I don't feel like being up for another three hours.

I really hope it's not the hard drive. I have a history of blowing them. I tried Gaim but it would not load MSN or YIM. I don't know why. I went back to Trillian. I'll print out the chkdisk thing and try that. I backed up everything already, but I don't know a thing about BIOS.
-
Update: for some reason Trillian has been corrupted again. That happened the last time this happened. A file was missing from it or something. Is there another "all in one" messenger someone can recommend? I did a spyware scan, disk cleanup and disk defrag.

Um...Moonlapse? Help? I was looking at a webpage and rendering a fractal (I mourn the loss of this beautiful fractal!) when I got freezing and the dreaded blue screen: "Kernal_Stack_Data_Error" or something like that. I unplugged it and restarted it, and it said something about having to restore a lost registry file, but then I got some other message that it was shutting down my system to prevent damage, that some files had been lost or something. I restarted again and it did the "had to restore a lost registry file" and said that the restoration was successful. It started up OK so I restored to an earlier time (about 2 weeks ago, before any of this started) and it restarted normally. I'm now trying to do an spyware scan but my internet connection is being painfully slow. I've blown all the dust out of my computer case. Pantagathus do you still think it's a power supply issue? or is there something I can do?

Well this week was very hectic. I got called in on my day off, and relapsed into my flu-like sickness because of it. Subway opened at our store on Wednesday, and it's been crazy busy ever since. I really hope that things settle down a bit because no one is getting their work done for doing Subway. On Monday my computer broke but it spontaneously fixed itself. I had a lot of loose ends tied up this week, I got my car fixed from that parking lot oopsie way-back when, and some other issues that have been worrying me were resolved. Overall it's been a productive week, and I am pleased. I am having this weekend off again, and I had this sinking feeling I would be called in. My manager asked me if I wanted to get some overtime, but I declined. I'm feeling like crap again (actually, I have called off sick today because of it) and I told her I think I really need the time off to recover from me ongoing (2+ week) illness. She said that if I changed my mind and was feeling better, to give her a call she could really use some help this weekend. I'll think about it. I got my new hand drum, and I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of a beautiful amethyst ring from Israel (made by the same guys who made my mozambique garnet one). I'm burning some "pinon pine" resin and it smells WONDERFUL. It's my favorite, along with Dragon's Blood. (I also have Myrrh, Frankincense, and Copal Resin. The Myrrh is impure and makes a very odd and bad smell after the resin part of it burns away.)

My computer froze again, but it's running fine now. I wish I knew if it was going to give it up before two months is over, so I have a chance of getting the right kind of compy (which I probably won't when I *really* need it, though I don't have spare cash just lying around for a comp that I don't need)

The Worst Punishments in History???
Lost_Warrior replied to spittle's topic in Historia in Universum
Oh, that is very strange! I don't know which would be worse, the pain, or the strangeness factor. -
I just wish that there was something available now besides Vista. It's incompatible with practically *everything* out there, including my blog.
-
I'll take the case apart at some point and look for dust. I think I have some "canned air" upstairs. My house isn't that dusty, and my computer isn't in an enclosed space, but the computer *is* right near the front door, so it probably gets more dust than most things. I really was pretty desperate when I tried to do a full restore, and the fact that it didn't *work* well...yea...that's a little odd.

LOL I have computer problems, my mom uses my comp too and she's one of those who can't wear watches...even the wind-up kind. I'm not quite as bad as her, but I did manage to freeze three Macs in 10 minutes...a pretty impressive record if you ask me. Laptops overheat when I use them and are frightfully slow. I really don't use mine for much either. (It's 94% free space.) Internet, mostly, and artwork. That's pretty much it. I occasionally burn CD's, and use the word processor. For some reason, I keep blowing hard drives.
-
I didn't buy this lemon LOL my dad did. I'd rather not have to shell out bucks for a new comp

Actually the one noise is a fan I didn't know I had...I've got more than one or it's got more than one setting, because it's very loud when it's "running". It started up and is running beautifully. I still don't know what happened. Someone else suggested something might have overheated, I don't know it didn't have that "computer fart" smell that it occasionally gets when something starts getting hot (this happens rarely...about once every three months or so...for a few minutes.)
-
It's not the fans, I know what sound they make lol. All HD's make noises, just usually not a lot of noises.
-
Macs are out of my price range, and I remember freezing three of them within 10 minutes at school one time. My computer is doing wonderfully now. But before, when trying to read an "in browser" PDF file, it froze. CTRL+ALT+DEL would not work, nor would the off button, so I switched off the surge protector, and switched it back on. I restarted it, and I went back to try to read the file. It started to freeze, then went "internal page kernel data error" (or those words in a different order) then restarted. I tried restoring to an earlier time and it did the same kernel error thing. I tried doing "restore" from the black startup screen (F11) and it did "unmountable boot volume". I tried using the restore CD and it would not do it, I got some error again and then it said "unreadable boot disk" or something. After much switching off and on and retrying, I gave up. Basically, it did everything that it did before when the HDD and motherboard died. To a T. So I gave up on the thing and went to the neighbors to use their comp and post these messages. I come home and think "oh just for kicks and giggles I'll try it again". I turn it on, it's running beautifully. It says that the system restore I attempted (to an earlier time) was unsuccessful because it was interrupted by an improper shut down. The first thing I did was back up my art and such that was on my hard drive. Then I undid the partial restore like it recommended. It restarted, as it was supposed to, beautifully. I then did a virus scan which turned up nothing, and I defragmented the disk just to be safe. I noticed my messenger wasn't responding when I clicked the icons to start it, so I just deleted it, and uninstalled it, and reloaded it from the website, thinking it would be safer than trying to get the possibly corrupted file to work. The computer, is running fine now. It's not slow, or anything. My friend asked if the HD is making a high pitched whine (meaning it's about to blow) and it's not. It's making a quiet "mid frequency" hum, which I assume is perfectly normal, at least it does not seem out of the ordinary. This thing always was louder than most, when my mom turned it on the first time she thought she'd broke it! It's still making all the normal (for this computer, anyway) noises and nothing unusual. I'm hoping that when I shut it down tonight and we try to turn it on in the morning, it will work OK. Mom has been using it all night and she says it has performed without a glitch.

Oh really?! That's a relief! The computer is new, a little over a year old, however I've had numerous problems with it. My house was built in 1910, and I'm using a cheapo surge protector. My neighbor's computer was having problems about the same time mine was. We live in "the boonies" and there was a snowstorm recently. Old lines+snow...I wonder...
-
Yea, I don't know. I did have to mess with the surge protector to get it to unfreeze. But it did *exactly* what it did the last time. I do hope you're right, although it looked pretty grim when I got "kernel errors" and "unmountable boot volume". I've never known a hard drive to fail, and then work perfectly again so suddenly?? well whatever the case, I hope that it remains working as well as it is now. The first thing I did when I got it up and running again was to backup all my artwork that I had on my comp and didn't want to lose. I consider it a wonderful bit of fortune that I was able to do that even if it does go down again. My instant messenger seems to be gone though. No big deal. That may have been the problem, I'll just reload it.
-
Sorry guys, my lemon...erm...I mean, my computer...is broken again. I tried everything I could, but the restore disks won't even work. I guess I should order that Dell I've been wanting after all. I am so sick of sudden hard drive failures. This week sucks. And damnit, I knew I should have gotten it way back when! All I can get now is Windows Vista, which is known for it's problems (like being able to read my blog).

That actually does make sense then. I do have a rather close relationship with a Celtic solar deity...
