  1. Well it snowed. We got one heck of a snow storm in the middle of April. And the power was out all day, but now it's back on again. I hope it stays on. This week has been very stressful, but I'm extremely glad that it is over. I have tomorrow off too, and I'm really enjoying my time off. Due to the power outage I had nothing to do (other than shoveling 18 inches of snow) so I spent most of the day in meditation (when not trying to keep warm. I was huddled around an oil lamp for heat. It was pathetic.) I didn't get the ring I was bidding on, I got "sniped" at the last minute. Oh well, I'm sure another will come along. I'm going to let my mom on the comp soon, because she wants to check her Ebay auction.
  2. Greek Fire was definitely a hazard to both sides. I believe I've seen references to it causing as much disaster on the side using it as on the enemy.
  3. Teens Sue Cosmetics Company Over "Angel Dust" Two North Dakota teens are suing B&B Cosmetics over a glittery eyeshadow product called "Angel Dust". The teens were hospitalized last month after having inhaled the product in question and had to undergo intensive medical treatment. The two boys, aged 15 and 17 ordered the product online, apparently thinking that it was PCP. "We thought it was a clever way to buy and sell PCP without getting caught" they told their parents. They apparently failed to notice the glitter. After snorting the "Angel Dust" at a party, the pair had to be rushed to the emergency room, where they were immediately placed in intensive care. The glitter pieces imbedded themselves in the boys' nasal passages and lungs and have caused potentially irreperable scarring. "We're horrified," the boys' parents told BS News. "We can't believe a company would call this stuff Angel Dust when it's not the real PCP. Our children could have been killed." The boys and their parents are suing B&B Cosmetics, the makers of "Angel Dust". Their lawyers have declined comment. The names of the teens and parents are being withheld for privacy reasons. OK, your turn!
  4. Perhaps then I'm failing to look at it in context of what was available at the time. I do know that with modern reproductions of ancient weapons, chainmail is easily cut/slashed/stabbed through with a decent blade. However these are modern reproductions, what they had at the time was probably quite different.
  5. Chain mail is relatively easy to stab through. You can even make it through segmentata if you have the right angle (between the plates) and a sharp enough blade. The gladius was primarily a thrusting weapon, but it was occasionally used to slash at unprotected legs and arms.
  6. I think I remember seeing that username around too.
  7. The Roman attitude towards homosexuality seems to be that it really didn't matter *what* gender your partner was, as long as they were a lower social class/younger than you and you were the active participant. Romans desired to have sex with beautiful partners, of either gender.
  8. Well, Easter Week is over. I got my new ring from Israel and it is BEAUTIFUL. I also got my other new one today, a "color change" amethyst that really does change from a bluish purple to a raspberry red. Unfortunately, the seller lied about the size; it's a size 10 or 11, she said it was a size 7. It doesn't fit my biggest thumb. Yesterday I got to go to my grandmother's for lunch. I had to miss Easter dinner, because I got stuck working. But I got to help hide eggs and watch the kids try to find them before I left. My mom gave me her wedding rings yesterday, and overall it was a good day. My grandmother surprised me with an orchid and another African violet. I need to clean out my upstairs room to find a place for them. My grandad saw my tattoo for the first time, but I really think grandma must've told him about it before (judging by his lack of reaction. He only said "it comes off, right?" LOL) I'm watching a beautiful natural alexandrite on Ebay. It's from a company famous for selling their alexandrites and they usually go way out of my price range. But it would fit my right pinky finger (the only finger I don't have a ring on) and it isn't going sky high yet. With a little luck, I just might get it. If I can get it for under a 100 bucks I'm going to have to. Last night I spoke to a very close friend who I haven't spoken to very much in years. We did everything together in elementary school. I told her about my other friend who is having a very rough time, although I kind of feel bad about telling her because I had told my other friend I wouldn't tell anyone (keeping in mind though that my childhood friend doesn't know the other, and probably never will; I didn't mention her name). I just needed to talk to someone about it. I've been worried sick about my friend (literally) for weeks and I couldn't take it anymore. I miss my old school friend too. We've regrettably grown apart over the years, but I would very much like to get to know her again. She is probably the best friend I've ever had. Today I heard from my other friend and I am very happy to say she seems to be doing *much* better.
  9. Centurions have longer Vitae (latin people...help?) Sorry, couldn't resist.
  10. I didn't know that about shin splints either. I think I had them once, from walking uphill at a very fast pace, for a long distance (don't try walking 3-5 miles in new clogs either...I think I wound up with a stress fracture from that one). I didn't do anything about them, except not walk for a few days and they seemed to heal nicely, but I'm not completely unused to difficult training (though out of practice) and I am fairly active. What exactly are shin splints and why would olive oil help them?
  11. It seems to me that it would be rough going at first, but with constant training they would be less susceptible to injuries. I mean, sure, bruises, scrapes, sprains and the like would be very common, especially after a battle of any sort. However we have to look at it in context of the time. People were a lot tougher back then. We're completely unused to any sort of training such as they faced; we've gone soft LOL. We would be suffering greatly but they probably didn't suffer much from shin splints and the like, because their bodies were used to it. It also seems that they had fairly decent medical care, especially for the time. They probably wouldn't be given much time to rest, but they must've had excellent liniaments and other such items to help with injuries. Clearly they were given some time, or medicine to help them recover, or both-because if they weren't, they would not be in very good shape for war. There's only so much you can do with an injured ankle, or leg, or foot, or back. And if you don't rest it, the injury is likely to get worse. Since the histories don't tend to mention a bunch of lame legionaries (and even if they just weren't mentioned, I have a hard time believing a leader would easily allow his men to go lame from lack of decent medical care) there has to have been *something* which would have helped their situation. My guess is, they knew very well how to handle these things. They must've happened quite often, but maybe not so much from overwork (since they tended to be stronger from training than we would likely be in a similar situation) but from injuries that just tend to happen in battle, or in other accident-prone conditions. If they didn't take care of such injuries, there wouldn't be much of a functional legion left after a few months.
  12. My new printer ROCKS. It makes my camera compatable with Vista, by way of giving me an "in the back door" by sticking my memory card into the printer and uploading the pictures from my camera through the printer. It's also a copier, and it makes flippin' awesome scans. I'm a bit upset because of the amount of money my dad spent on my new scanner, which I'll no longer use (unless I set up my old not quite dead comp upstairs for use with my art programs). It makes me feel bad. But I do have a spare scanner.
  13. Are you in love with leeches or something? LOL
  14. lol the only problem I'm having so far is a few complications with the internet connection, and I accidentally hit something on the keyboard when I was almost done DLing my messenger and it made the download disappear.
  15. My new computer arrived today. It was interesting getting it to connect to the internet, and using this new Windows Vista is a trip LOL. But so far I like it. It's tiny, and I have my monitor sitting on top of the PC (because the PC is rather "flat" with feet on the side of the case as well...so it's clearly designed to lie on it's side...besides that the disk drive is sideways.) It's a much smaller HD than I had before, but I think part of my problem may have been too much power and no idea how to use it/maintain it. So I'm going to try a much smaller system. The new IE isn't bad, I'm not trying Firefox until the bugs are worked out of it. I haven't used Internet Exploder in ages.... but it is very fast on this computer (when I can get the internet connection to work). It's a daunting prospect to try to teach my mom to use the computer all over again with the new Windows Vista...as my friend said "It's pretty"...the desktop background and screen savers are amazing...I can't say one way or the other about the rest of it. But compared to my old lemon this new system literally *purrs* I had a heck of a time getting it here, I actually ended up making arrangements with my neighbor to sign for it. I'm really glad that worked out though. I haven't tried the new printer yet, I'll save that for another day. Work was very interesting this week, I have to work tomorrow and then I got two days off. I'm feeling a bit burnt out, and my ears are clogged (leftovers from that horrid flu) so I can't really hear. But other than that, I'm feeling quite healthy. The new SubWay at work is causing a lot of heartache for us workers, but I really do think that it is an improvement. Things are looking up.
  16. Exactly. I also don't think that most lower class people are going to say if they actually *do* have a mystical experience-outside of their family or their religious group. An emperor is likely to say so because it gives him a reputation of power...but your average person has nothing to gain from the publicity, and more important things to worry about.
  17. It's you *normal* people who are crazy. Us crazy folks are just fine. You mean they don't? That is a very good point. I hadn't thought about that. We need to remember to think about these things in context...we've way to much time on our hands so we come up with all kinds of strange ideas and things to occupy ourselves.
  18. I use Firefox too! I've been having all sorts of problems with my computer, and the freezing and crashing almost always happens when Firefox is trying to update. My friend is also having problems with Firefox. I think my problems are hardware problems (because it has happened when I wasn't hooked up to the internet or using Firefox) but it started out only when I was on the internet with Firefox. I do wonder if Firefox could somehow be related.
  19. I disabled page file and ran a dskchk on drive D. It froze on the dskchk. I rebooted, it ran dskchk again normally this time, and restarted normally.
  20. Congrats Augusta!! Excellent essay! Congrats to everyone else as well. All worked very hard and I enjoyed reading the essays a great deal.
  21. I have four cute little guys from Lead Warrior. They are unpainted, but very high quality and absolutely adorable!
