  1. What were some of new weapons used by the late roman army? I know that the late heavy infantry was armed with a lancea and darts instead of the pilum, and a spatha replacing the gladius, correct me if i'm wrong, but what other weapons were used by light infantry?
  2. After Marcus Aurelius's son and successor Commodus died the Empire erupted into civil war, eventually won by Septimus Severus. These Wars of Succession, 193 AD - 197 AD, can be viewed as the last gasp of the segmentata. It was no longer standard issue to new recruits, and had already become a very rare sight. The period 180 to 235 AD was a transitional time. The old and the new would have intermixed a lot before the old segmentata fell into disuse completely.

  6. wow CenPrinCohILegVIVictPF! Thanks for the info!! The reason I brought this topic up, is because I am currently working on a video game project called Reign. Which is based on Roman wars during the rule of Marcus Aurelius, and I was wondering if you could make me a list of legionary's equipment during that time of period. By that I mean type of armour, weaponry, clothes...
  7. "The legionaries carried a dagger starting in the 2nd or 1st centuries BC. During the rein of Augustus the gladius was carried on one belt and the pugio hung on another. By the 2nd century AD daggers were no longer issued." Scource : http://www.redrampant.com/roma/weapons.html "Below a first - second century AD soldier`s belt, the cingulum, to carry the dagger (pugio). The short sword (gladius) was usually carried using a thin leather belt over the shoulder, the so-called balteus." source : http://www.romancoins.info/MilitaryEquipme...t-cingulum.html 69 AD

They carry javelins or, in their own language, framms, pointed with a piece of iron short and narrow, but so sharp and manageable, that with the same weapon they can fight at a distance or hand to hand, just as need requires." 18. War on the Danube: The Marcomannic Wars 166-180 AD 166 Gothic tribes attack the Danube limes in two different areas, but the Romans hold them off. 167 Evidence suggests that there is a movement of the Gothic tribes due to an increase in population and the army set forth to find a new abode. This movement of the Goths forced the movements of the Marcomanni in AD 167-175 and 178-180. 168 The Marcomannic Wars begin because the Goths displace the Marcomanni into the Roman Empire (AD 167-175). 169 The Marcomannic Wars continue. 170 The Marcomannic Wars continue. 171 The Marcomannic Wars continue. The Cimbri attack the frontier in Dacia and are repelled by the Roman army. 172 The Marcomannic Wars continue and there is an internal movement of the Germanic tribes. 173 The Marcomannic Wars continue and there is an internal movement of the Germanic tribes. 174 The Marcomannic Wars continue and there is an internal movement of the Germanic tribes. 175 The Marcomannic Wars continue. Germanic movement is documented as stopping during the period of Marcus Aurelius, the limes hold but movement occurs in the East along the limes that stop around AD 175. 178 The Second Marcomannic War starts in AD 178 and continue until 180. 179 The Marcomannic Wars continue. 180 The Marcomannic Wars concludes and the Marcomanni are forced to return to Germania. If you seen the movie Gladiator, the first war scene is supposedly the second marcomannic war.
