  1. It's a tougher period to speculate about since a lot of what we know about them depends on archaeology, which in the absence of written history leaves things open to individual interpretation.
  2. I seemed to have missed that one Primus. Another great board game is Republic of Rome, anyone play that one? http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1513
  3. Ironic isn't it? But then perhaps the worst exile could be on that island they call Britannia, and Lesvos a vacation in comparison... Just kidding Red Coats I love your country.
  4. Hm...Agrippina was exiled to the island of Pandateria and died of starvation there. Agrippa Postumus was sent to Planasia. Patmos and Lesvos were known isles of exile. I think Tiberius was big on the island exile thing.
  5. I think maybe Dio Cassius might have something to say about it?
  6. Depending on your psychology, being abandoned on a deserted isle to live out the rest of your days can be tough, particularly for the aristocratic women who always seemed to get this one.
  7. Huh? I don't remember Africans in Iberia until the Muslim invasions...
  8. Is this the Pompeius Magnus from before?
  9. Axis & Allies is indeed fun. Imperium Romanum does a great job at remaking the empire wide military decision making come alive, if you can bear to remember the million rules associated with the game. It is a good memory exercize in itself! These days Rome Total War has taken over, but Imperium Romanum still has the Roman civil war theme to itself.
  10. I'm sorry to say, but you must be living in a ulturnate reality to be able to say "what people do behind closed doors" It is no longer such in America, sexuality is massivly common place. I fear that our society will collapse because of it. We are breeding races of ignorant, arrogant, microteens... I'm not joking. My 6 year old sister goes around acting like she is 14, singing and listening to rap, and not to mention has already cursed. And it isn't just my sister, you can see it all the time. Its a horrible debasement to the United States. If you honestly think this, then I guess the Greek civilization was tantamount failure in your eyes. A difficult thing to say of course seeing as how most modern philosophy and science we owe in a massive way to the sexually free Greeks.
  11. You could take that viewpoint, but then you would have to also say that incredible administrators like Augustus, Vespasian, or Diocletian were also not politicians. To say such a thing for me would be a robbery of the qualities of these heroes!
  12. Hm, I better stamp out some coins while I still have the chance...at least I'll be remembered!
  13. 14. Posters of UNRV! Our beloved forum is in the hands of madmen! This is a dark day, and I stand at a fork in the road. I can abide the law and surrender my arms to the Moderators - and watch the forum fall to tyranny and chaos. Or, I can go home with my sword in hand and run those maniacs to the Tarpean Rock! I, Favonius Cornelius Pola, by ancient right of my noble family, by right of the posting prowess of my dedication to our most glorious UNRV empire here, declare myself MODERATOR in perpetuus! To every poster who flocks to my banner, I promise increased rank and a donoativum of $1! Follow my banner to VICTORY! ARE YOU WITH ME!?
  15. Sure you could stamp your way up the crusus honorium here, OR you can TAKE what is YOURS by RIGHT! http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2336
  16. Hey any people here ever play the table top game called Imperium Romanum? It's a military strategy game running from 100BC to Justinian. I've always loved it, played it before we had Rome Total War, but getting people to play it was always a near impossibility. Those old school war games had such complex rules. Funny thing was some of them insulted you with a 'Ages 12 and up' haha.
  17. Yup, includes both halves, Celts, Franks, Goths, Huns, Persians, Berbers....ah it's great! Actually I am looking forward to what the Total Reality group can come up with too. Rumor on the street has it they will mod it.
  18. Ah yes that is it! Can you profess to us about the Tartessians? I'd like to learn more.
  19. While I agree with the idea that Rome and America are frighteningly similar in historical evolution, I do not agree with the supposed sociological trends as indicative of a nation's abilities. While Muslim states may point to the obese as a sign of our own corruption, I would point at their blatant sexism and archaic justice systems, or the ample populations in ALL these nations that live in poverty. Bravery and strength can come from the ugliest hole. Woe be the day that America is really in trouble, then I am sure one would find quite a population of people ready to use a gun. Using Caesar's definition of the Britons, one can also say that it was these same people who kept Caesar largely out of Briton and later brought the vengeance of Budica. Pertinax, by the way did you ever play Imperium before?
  20. Not sure Onasander. I'd say though that Khazaria is ideally situated as a central hub for all religions. It's taking on a new one and accepting all was a wise move by it's rulers. Fleeing Jews were probably also a good new source of population and skill for his land. I am curious about Kiev. The Khazars seem to have founded this important city, and then somewhere along the line the people of Kiev became their own power and resisted the Khazars. I wonder what happened about that.
  21. I imagine they would have tried if it could have been possible, but aside from perhaps Armenia, I do not recall this method working with much success. Major obstacles to overcome: only well known people are often entrusted to high positions, and often people from the same loyal families. And anyway what would be in it for a Parthian to betray his own people to the Romans? As far as Trajan's conquests being too hard to hold, frankly I don't buy it. I think Hadrian didn't want to worry about battle and rather travel and fornicate, this being his whole reason for foolishly retracting the borders. Sure it would not be easy, and would take more war, but bottom line there were still enemies at the gates.
  22. Now don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of table top wargaming, but I am not sure it would be the best resource for the actual thing...
  23. What was the worst battle for the Xth? The battle with the most losses?
