  1. I got caught by that a few times too when I lost tract of the site. The trick is to say ROMAN INTERNET FORUMS And URNV pops up.
  2. He he, look at all the people joining the comp I would like to be entered please.
  3. I never heard of the Germans doing that. That is odd. Why do we not hear about these things? This is far more interesting than the Egyptian ones.
  4. That was clearly a goal for England, even I would admit that.
  5. That was in the Stalag Luft III POW camp. They are showing a Concentration camp, like Auschwitz.
  6. Why would anyone want to play in a Concentration Camp though?
  7. Italia, maybe? But you are correct. Roman Britain is done to death by English scholars...
  8. I wish I could read a book in German. I have tried many times and failed ~I am having to read some World War 2 books for my English research. Yet again my Roman books must be pushed aside for homework...
  9. I would disagree with that. After the depression, the Nazi party were the German heroes, and millions became party members. Hitler managed to do what he wanted for years - The Rhineland, Sudatenland, army, navy, air force, Panzer Korps...all built up by Hitler, and the allies did nothing. You could say the Allies were weak, but in my opinion, Hitler was smart, and knew that Germany wanted. Germany did not want the 1919 treaty, and so he basically spat on it and did what he needed to do. German soldiers were welcomed into the Rhineland, as well as the Sudatenland. The Germans believed him to be hero, and to be honest, all the research I have done, no one minded that he disliked the Jews, as he was just such a good leader to them (until war of course). ~But back to topic, Caesar was indeed very political, and he did want more. I just wish he could have had a crack at the Parthians before being killed. It would be interesting to see how he would have fared.
  10. How expensive are their goods? And are they stocking good stuff?
  11. Ah I see. But was not the Optio and Standard Bearer to take command if a centurion was killed? I understand that the order in battle could be nasty, and centurions needed to be in the front, but I always assumed that the legate would be watching the battle and sending out orders with cavalry runners. It would not be that great, but people well into the 18th century conducted battles with that tactic. So with a smaller number of centuries, order could be kept easier? I agree with that, but I always believed that every cohort acted as its own regimental type unit, and that there would always be spare men for battle. So if you make the legion smaller, you will be decreasing available reserves, yes? ~Also, do you know of the First Spear centurions and centurions of higher rank fought in the front?
  12. We were so close, but they are heroes over here anyway. ~Italy came last in the group
  13. I have never been one for fiction like that, but I will give it a read if I have time. ~I am currently reading 'Kelly's Heroes'. It is a brilliant book.
  14. Ah, I see what you are getting at here. But even with a big legion, there would be centuries would there not? And chances are the whole legion would not be employed in one battle, so would it not have been better to keep in a bigger group of legionaries instead of a smaller lot? I have probably forgot some vital factor here, but I will ask these questions anyway.
  15. New Zealand faces Paraguay in less than 12 hours. I hope we win! ~Also, good job to USA.
  16. Was it very effective in the later years? Because I was thinking, with the larger amount of barbarians attacking the Romans and all that, and the shrinking and changing of the Roman legion, was the larger formations any less effective? For example, how would a 1000 man legion be able to stop a horde of barbarians, even in tight formation?
  17. That is very interesting. I never really payed attention to the Romans in the South West of England.
  18. Antoine wall...nice. I can imagine how dark it will be. ~What is The Road about?
  19. So that would definitely be a dark time to be in Roman Britain then. ~Where is the main character based?
  20. Personally I believe it was for maneuverability. I may be completely wrong here, but I always believed the Auxiliary's has oval shields because they had to be more maneuverable in battle, as they often fought in terrain which disrupted the legionary formations. Now, when the legions were split up into smaller 1,040 man mobile legions, it is only natural they would become more maneuverable, and they would not fight in tight formation as they once did. As they focused more on cavalry and lighter infantry, why not use the lighter infantry shields? it makes perfect sense to me. I may be wrong, but that is how I always thought it.
  21. I believe the first of the Irish came over before the land bridge was broken, but other than that I think they were just migrating Celts.
  22. I remember hearing about that case where the barber slit his clients throat because of a ball that was kicked at him. That always used to make me laugh when I was a kid (I was a very weird kid...). ~Caesar is very smart to bring games in to keep up fitness of troops instead of training routines over and over. I could just imagine everyone gang bashing the centurions in those games
  23. Thanks for reminding me, I have to read that book... ~Were is the story set? Is it still Roman Britain?
