  1. I was never really into Caligula, I always preferred Claudius. But I was always interested in some of his quotes, such as "I don't care if they hate me, as long as they obey me" He also made his horse a senator, which I find disturbing
  2. I am just about to read that. So it is very different from Scarrow you say? well I might still read it all the same...
  3. I am going to visit Berlin at the end of this year! is it nice there?
  4. Centurion isn't the last one in the series, Macro. "The Gladiator" came out the other day, so more macro and cato for you. Cheers Russ There is another one?! thats great! thanks for telling me!
  5. I liked the series of the Eagle of the Ninth series. Hopefully the film will be good, and not tarnish the books name.
  6. Then pepper them with javelins and slingshot, then rip apart the formation.
  7. miatrn helmos Thats what I call a cool name!
  8. I think they are excellent books. Cato and Macro are such great characters, and the adventures they go on are awesome. They are the total opposites of each other, which is what makes them so great. The adventures they go on range from the conquest of Britain, to the Roman navy...and even to Syria. They are not extremely factual, but they are some of my favorite books. My absolute favorite would have to be the Eagle and the Wolves.
  9. I am a big fan of Simon Scarrow's books. I started off by reading the Eagles Prey, and that got me into the series. Right now I am reading Centurion, which is the last book in the series. I think these books are great, the characters are all good, and so are the plots.
  10. I think that taking out the Praetorians was a good thing. They were to powerful, and were more committed to killing the Emperor's than actually protecting them. I don't agree with his disbanding the Urban cohorts as well though, as they were needed at that time to prevent riots.
  11. I think that the Phalanx would lose. It would not have the mobility that the Roman formation would have, so the Romans would be able to encircle the Phalanx and attack from multiple sides. The Romans would be disadvantaged by the length of the Macedonian spears, but when they throw their Javelins then they could get into the formation and rip it apart. Once that happens the Romans would win easily.
  12. That's a lot of alcohol! Happy birthday anyway, even though I am a few days late in commenting...
  13. That is a good find. They actually found animal skin wrapped around the dagger as well? that is pretty cool. I wish their was a picture of the dagger though...
  14. I just finished the Ship of Rome book that you guys recommended to me. I thought it had an awesome story, with it following the Roman Navy and not solely on the legions like a lot of books. The characters were very deep and they all had great story's behind them, as well as a number of separate plots. I think that the way the book combines fighting and politics is great. The only thing I did not like much was the end, because it left quite a few things unexplained.
  15. Since when do we need superheros in comics? ~I think it looks quite good. I must bookmark it!
  16. I have not heard much about him at all, but I thought he was a Spartan or an Athenian. I would not be a Theban I would think, because Alexander destroyed Thebes for standing against him.
  17. I suppose iot makes sense. It fits in with the ditch being further away from the wall than it would have been with a normal wall. And the Romans did used to do wooden walls and barricades first before stone ones I think.
  18. Apparently you can use contemporary weapons for the age you play in. Whether this means we'll be able to engage Romans with the gladius and pilum I do not know. After having played the demo, which featured the US Civil War, I had to use muskets and six shooters for the majority of the game. Later on I was given a machine gun when the going got tough. Even then the game wasn't as easy, simply because of the large numbers of enemies on screen. Overall though the game isn't bad. It's made by an indpendent games developer and as a result it has some poor production values. Mostly it's let down by some graphical glitches here and there, poor voice acting, and some bad AI. I hope that some of these problems will be ironed out of the game soon. I still like the concept thoug. I think it would be cool to be able to use a gladius in the game, but it would look a bit odd in first person I would think...
  19. Very true. I suppose he wanted to put his patronage behind a 'royal' colour.
  20. Cool! I have always liked Museums, although the one in my city only has a little corner dedicated to the Ancient World so it is kind of a let down.
  21. The Byzantines usually used siphons mounted on ships to throw the Greek Fire at their opponents. Really? did it work well?
