  1. Interesting. If it were imperial legions of the Pax Romana period, it would probably have been be 300 legionaries with supporting auxiliaries. baysically an understrength cohortI think they would not get caught off guard with that pathway like the Spartans did, but ultimately I think the Romans would have held their ground, as they would have no where to run, and would be run down by the Persians after they retreated. They would have put up a good fight, but I am unsure if the Roman short swords would have been as effective to kill Persians with than the Greek spears, which kept the Persians away at distance. But it would all come down to the commander I suppose. If it were an experienced Centurion with experienced men, they would have held, but with green troops they would have failed. Well trained imperial legions could have done the job. But late imperial legions? They were not very good. The allies would probably be numeri or other untrained barbarian mercenaries. I doubt if they would have put up half a fight the earlier legions would have, and would have most likely retreated after heavy losses from waves of Persians. I do not believe late imperial soldiers could have stopped them, but early imperial soldiers might have been able to.
  2. That is a good enough reason for me. History does show us the way into the future, and without we would be blind.
  3. Maybe, but I think they focused more on holding their formation together, and presenting a steady line of spears at the enemy. It would have been tactless in my opinion for them to run, as it would disrupt the formation and possibly allow the enemy to get among them.
  4. Welcome back! I was not here back then, and yes I think everything is going well here
  5. Welcome to the forum. If you need any help then just ask, but the site is pretty straightforward and I think you will be fine.
  6. Understandable. However I find the Spartans annoy me. But I can see why you enjoy it.
  7. It has only affected me once, and I don't mind. It is all for the best.
  8. It looks like a good idea, but how do you play?
  9. Ha ha, same! Only I am user Optiow, not Centurion-Macro.
  10. I actually have no idea. I know that the Romans followed Greek traditions and copied their Gods etc, so they probably did have a mountain as their home, although probably under a different name.
  11. Welcome to the site. You might find us an odd bunch at first, but we are really very nice Which site do you normally hang out on? chances are if it is a history site I am a member there. ~I have never been strong on the Greeks myself, as I find them second to Rome. I am very interested in all of history, but Rome, World War 2 and Communism are my favorite bits. What bits of Greece do you focus on the most?
  12. I know what you mean. That is why I had a hard time finding late imperial legions, as I do not know many myself.
  13. I think that future books will need a time where the friends hate each other for a while. I would hate that they would be fighting, but it would be great if they had a disagreement and stopped talking. It would make a good change. I do think there is another book in the works, but I am not 100% sure. ~You thought that? I knew something would have to go wrong, but I actually thought they were both going to jump into the ravine
  14. Thank for telling me what I have done wrong. I am making another quiz and I shall try for harder questions. ~Also, I have no idea. You got me, I honestly don't know that question's answer
  15. This is a quiz I made about the Roman Legions. I wanted to see how you guys like it and what scores you get. To participate you really do have to know a lot about the different legions and where they were stationed etc. I have proofread it, but knowing me there might be a mistake or two, so if you spot any mistakes I am sorry about that. http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?quiz=320819
  16. True, however I (and many others probably) would not like the books if they became all about Cato. With the books set in Britain they were both doing the same amount of work together, and now it seems they are going their different ways. We can already see that Cato will probably become an equestrian and marry Julia, but what will become of Macro? He has no political sense and he is only a soldier. So while Cato advances through the ranks, it is obvious that Macro will stay where he is, and possibly go down a promotion from Prefect if he rejoins the legions after staying with the auxiliaries for so long. For example, Gladiator was placed solely on Cato. They had Cato to get the reinforcements, and Cato to rescue the grain ships while Macro was a prisoner. I know they did that to show that Cato is independent, I think that future books will be like this, where Macro gets a second place to Cato. And although Macro is happy with it, I would rather that didn't happen. Macro and Cato need to be on equal footing, and not one towering over the other.
  17. To be honest I didn't like how the two of them split up during the story, and how Cato got the command at the end. I can see why they did it, but Macro is definitely my favorite of the two and I think that he is slowly being taken out of the mainlight and Cato is sort of 'hogging' all the important parts while Macro does the dirty work.
  18. I don't have a Facebook. I don't really like speaking to people online who might be half a world away at that particular moment. I find it creepy. ~I do like the idea of Roman history spreading though. I think it is good to put history places on sites like that where many do not know about such things.
  19. Just adding to the topic, and you might not be interested in this, but Rome got most of its grain from Sicily (after it became Roman) until they conquered Egypt, and then the Emperors were able to give out free rations of grain for public support.
  20. Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your time here! ~I don't collect coins, as I focus more on the political and military history of Rome.
  21. I would definitely go and see it. I don't like to miss Roman films, even if they suck.
  22. Yes there would have been Centurions, but with the army reform they probably commanded a different number of soldiers and not 80. They would have looked more like this, and not like they used to in the Early empire.
  23. I agree. Scarrow has a way of making things funny, even in serious situations. The books set in Britain are the best, and I love it in 'When the Eagle Hunts' how Macro and Cato get guides that they had a...history with, and how Cato has to dress up as a celt etc.
