  2. Hi there Kosmo! Good to see you here! It's been a long long time - for me too, mind you. I've only recently made my comeback as well after being "offline" for about 2 years. Indeed, as Viggen suggested, a Hun-related thread would be a welcome change.
  3. For a moment, I thought the article was referring to the Germanic tribe (Vandals) rather than just modern-day jackasses. It doesn't make it any less sad though.
  4. Mel Gibson starring as "Mad Maximus" hehe. Not the highlight of his career, I guess.

    Bang!

According to Wikipedia, "UK advertisements are presented by "Barry Scott", an effusive character played by Neil Burgess, who claims that Cillit Bang can remove limescale, rust and ground-in dirt, and places a copper-plated One Penny coin in Cillit Bang to demonstrate the product's cleaning ability. In another version of the advert, Barry is joined by a stereotypical housewife character, Jill, who remarks of his penny-cleaning demonstration, "You love that one, Barry!". (The back of the container originally listed copper as a substance on which one should not use Cillit Bang; however, it has since been amended.) Haha!
  6. Given recent headlines, this disclaimer should be a lot longer.
  7. Always interesting to hear an alternative point of view, whether it's accurate or not. Let us know what you think once you've watched it, Caldrail.
  8. Oh my, this thread is old - it was started almost 10 years ago so it's funny to read what people were watching back in 2005. I'm currently watching Game of Thrones and Hannibal (a bit gruesome but superbly done!).
  9. Actually no, according to the Newcastle University website, the course starts on 22 September and registration started yesterday (2 June): http://www.ncl.ac.uk/press.office/press.release/item/newcastle-university-launches-a-free-online-course-about-hadrian-s-wall-with-futurelearn So there is still time! :-)
  10. It is a sad fact that rape has been used as a weapon of war for thousands of years. I agree with the OP that a rapist should NEVER be regarded as a hero, irrespective of any acts of bravery. Condoning rape during times of war is implicitly saying that it's ok under certain circumstances. It should never be ok, whether in times of war or peace. It is mildly comforting to know that there are international resolutions and statutes in place that condemn rape and other atrocities and quite clearly label them as crimes against humanity. I say "mildly" because sadly, more often than not, international law is simply ignored.
  11. Love Eddy Izzard, he's got the most brilliant sketches on languages (Latin, French, German, etc). By the way, he's brilliant in Hannibal (the tv series).
  12. @Viggen: It wasn't just the ladies who had outrageous hairdos. Guys could be pretty creative too. @Ghost: Hadn't heard of Scarlet Fantastic but they sound (or sounded) quite all right. By the way, I just love the British pop/new wave/rock bands from the 80s - they were pretty prolific at the time!
  13. I was feeling a bit nostalgic today and having a little 80s revival at home when I came across this "gem" of a video clip. It couldn't be more eighties and even includes a part played by Cleopatra and Mark Anthony (or is it Julius Caesar??). Enjoy! :-)
  14. Wow, breathtaking! Could this be in Turkey?
  15. Well, I suspected it would go fast but not that fast! Note to self: in future do not pick any Italian locations unless it's somewhere really really remote... Over to you Bryaxis.
  16. Too far east? Hmm, in that case I'd go to Sicily which has a strong Greek heritage. Could this be the San Giovanni church in Erice?
  17. Rucanor Aluminium Baseball Bat customer review on Amazon UK: What the...??
  18. OMG, I didn't know it was Falco who sang that (unlike "Rock me Amadeo")!! It's funny, this song was popular in Brazil as well back in the 80s. I remember that I didn't understand a word of it, and just assumed he was singing in English (which I didn't speak at all at the time).
  19. FYI, I started a similar thread back in 2009. Guess it's good to refresh these topics from time to time.
  20. Cheers to you, Mr. Ghost! Hope you have a swinging day.
