  1. Added only book from this month's list to my wish list. The Greek and Roman Myths: A Guide to the Classical Stories
  2. Artorius Castus After reading all this, I googled Artorius Castus. He is an interesting person and enough information is around to make him a mystery. I think a good book can made out of his life - minus the Arthurian legend- okay you authors out there, write me book - in the vein of the Eagle in the Snow or Nineth Legion or the Lost Legion. Would that I could write..
  3. I finally searched for pogs. this one of the sites I found:) Bad fads
  4. I just got the last book in Fourth Realm Trilogy by John Twelve Hawks. I have reread The Traveler and am now rereading The Dark Road. It has been a few years since I read these books and they still are very thought provoking. The last book in the series is The Golden City... ----- Please please make it have at least some rays of light.
  5. I found this thread very enligthening. This is why I stay here. Centurion-Marco's comment: I have been reading John Twelve Hawks series of books about the 'Vast Machine'. This sounds so much like his idea of our history and modern times. What has changed? The techonology used to control society? (rampant paranoia on my part???)
  6. Carthage the things one finds on the net just by following links. 'wonders what will happen now?'
  7. ArchAtlas I spend a bit of time exploring. Oh to have more time.
  8. First Ladies of Rome After reading the review of this book, I think it is a good candidate for my wish list:). and this time the book does pertain to Rome.
  9. the things they are a changing in Turkey This is not the first article I have read about changes and attempted changes in politics, policies etc. in turkey
  10. What was the name of the book and who was the author? After looking at the site you posted a link for, I think I want to add it to my wish list.
  11. Congratulations... I knew you when...........

  15. What will I do with my new stola... Maybe celebrate another 50 to 100 years?
  16. The Tiger: A True Story Of Vengeance And Survival Just reading the blurb at Chapters about this book brought forth the same fear that thinking about meeting a grizzly in the wild. But I think I must read this book, I love big cats, I don't need to 'own' them. wonderfulness I would dearly like to visit visit this wild life park. This video is well worth watching. (Crispina, this is from the site of the Roman series of videos you recommended, again thank you!) But then I love little cats too. I have had 3 companion cats, each totally different in character, but all lovable and they did love back. I could go on and on about cats but I will stop there.
  17. Roman Projections/ This a very short but succinct article on this subject. Well thought out.
  18. Just added 2 more books to my wish list. History of the Roman Republic (Blackwell History of the Ancient World) Orosius: Seven Books of History against the Pagans thank you:)
  19. I started watching Order from Chaos. I think it is well worth watching. thanks for finding this.
  20. Listen to a bit today.. I liked listening to it. thanks for the link
  21. I haven't seen this show, but some of your comments reminded me of a the book Antonina written by Wilkie Collins. But Collins had an excuse for inaccuracies, his book was written about 1850.
  22. After reading your post Kosmos, Laeteguy's focus on the issue seems much narrower than yours, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Speaking the role of the military and government, the book Barca commented on in another postings appears to be related. I remember learning about difference's between France divesting itself of colonies and the way the British did. Unfortunately I don't remember many of them but what struck me was how it reflected the countries governments and their perception of the roles they played in world politics. If the war is a political tool but being used badly (which is possible by virtue of it being a tool- which can be considered neutral until used) why is it wrong for people who know how to use the tool effectively to do so? this discussion got me thinking of the role perceived by the military in Brazil around the 1900, There were ultruistic military officers that thought if the politicians couldn't help the country, it was their duty to do so.
  23. http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/theirs-do-and-die?nopager=1 I found this article at this site http://www.aldaily.com/ (I have such a difficulty posting links so they are clickable) I found this article very thought provoking. Especially the link (in my mind) of the French government after the battle and the American government and Iraq and Afghanistan, the inability to carry a war to completion. One can have battles but not war. I have often thought and my mother( she was an uneducated-unschooled first generation immigrant) before me thought that we create our soldiers, use them and then throw them away if they do not revert to civilians immediately. And now we not only throw them away, we revile them. This common thought was remarkable because we were so different philosophically and psychologically. I am considering trying to find copies of Jean Larteguy's books. The Centurions and Pretorians as titles appeal greatly, but is only because they remind of Rome.
  24. I didnt check out the details for authentisity(sp??), but I did look at the pictures of the actors playing leads - Marcus and Esca. They don't look like I pictured them, so therefore they are not Marcus and Esca. This is why I can't read a book then see the movie.
