  1. Sonic, I have pre ordered it from Chapters-Indigo!! looking forward to reading it.
  2. Hi Sonic Congratulations! your book is not avaible in Canada yet but will be in about 2 months.. I think it is preorder time. This is one Roman I have always been interested in but never seemed to actively look for information.
  3. this song led to others and now I am all nostoligic(cant spell either). CCR... http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=zZe9OtFNt_8&...feature=related
  4. Welcome Lady Jemina I am fairly new here too, but I find this community to be quite welcoming and enjoyable. Oh and quite helpful Two general history books on Rome I have found helpful are These Were The Romans by G.I.F. Tingay and J. Badcock A History of the Roman People 4th edition , by Allen M. Ward, Fritz M. Heichelheim and Cedric A. Yeo
  5. you win sesterces(??) that can be spent on the site. for me it more of challenge to see if can find the answers.
  6. Every year I do try to figure out the answers the questions in this quiz, which can be found here. http://www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Thread/861908 And I will try again this year.
  7. shoot, do you know how long my list of books to read is? lol I will add this one too. Always looking for referrals.
  8. ahhh but in the vast scheme of things does it really matter? Give me early Santana.
  9. I have just finished rereading Rosemany Sutcliff's The Nineth Legion and then went on to read the The Silver Branch and The Lantern Bearers. Were there and /or are there people or men like like the Centurion Marcus Flavius Aquila and his descendants? I hope so.
  10. Thanks gentleexit, I have bookmarked both sites.
  11. sometimes I think that in an earlier life I was Roman, not the Roman of Hollywood sword and sandal movies, but Roman. Unfortunately I have never been able to articulate just what a 'Roman' was.
  12. I love the whimsy of the opening paragraph in the article, as well as the rest of the article.
  13. Thanks Primus Pilus I will check out the link. This is precisely the information I am looking for. With regards to the spelling of Caesar, I am sorry about that. Caesar is one of those words I have given up trying to spell correctly. The 'ae', 'ie' combination defeats completely, even with all the little hints a person learns in school. I do have a legitimate excuse now. Age (an on going joke in my family). I should use spell check.
  14. I have been trying to find a good detailed source on Roman roads. When was each road built? Which road went closest to Clusium and how far was Clusium from Rome. The time period would be around the Ceasar's assassination. I have looked on line, I have some general books on Rome etc, but I cant seem to find the particular information I require. PS. yes it is for a story.
  15. Augusta, I have finished the Silver Pigs. I really enjoyed it, but the first person style did detract from it for me. you can order the Silver Pigs on line at Chapters/Indigo. A Canadian bookstore. They have actual stores and a site. chapters.indigo.ca I got my book in about 3 business days. It is way too easy to order on line........lol I also got Medicus. I read that book in one night.. (until 5 am).. I think I will have to get the sequel
  16. The right place .... I finally started reading the Falco series by Linday Davis. As usual I have to start with the first book. I am enjoying the Silver Pigs and would recommend it those few here who have not already read it . Usually I dont like first person fiction, I will make an exception here:)
  17. This book is part of a reading list by online Roman History group. They will be discussing the chapters 11 and on in January. They have already discussed chapters 1 through 10, so I have a lot of catch up to do. The first chapter is on the various sources used by Roman historians. So far so interesting.
  18. sounds like a good list of books... when oh when will I have the time to read them??
  19. thank you Docoflove,, I will definitely add these to my growing list of must have books one day.. some of them to be had sooner than later...
  20. ps I tried edit the above post for grammar etc but the edit button didnt work for me..
  21. I am looking for an extremely basic book on linguistics or linguistic terms used in the study of a language. Among my various and shallow interests is cuneiform. I tried to learn some cuneiform symbols via the Oriental Institute in Chicago (a correspondence course. Do you know how difficult it is to find something this about Ancient Assyrian or Sumerian????). It was very interesting but... there would use terms I didnt understand. Example, logographic, elements, logograms, also things d supra(I dont know to type this) dutu, ca sub(same thing here)1.
  22. Its too late, when that cat walked in the door, that was its statement of owenership of all within.
  23. Have you ever read a book and thought this author has read my mind? While reading The Roman Republic by Crawford, this happened a few times. This is not a long or big book, but filled with ideas. I love books that encourage thought.
  24. I did, but I thought that the fat cat would appear with my posts too. I didnt realize that on site, there are 2 different avatars with different functions. Thanks for the help. I wish could say : Computer do this. And it would be done. lol
