  1. I havent read Brian Fagan's 'The Little Ice Age" but I did read his 'The Long Summer: How Climate Changed Civilizations', at least a fair portion of it.. after reading the posts here, I will want to go back and read the book completely. This book starts about 18000 BC and goes right up the present (that being 2004, when the book was published ).
  2. Klingon, I quite enjoy pictures.. I like the option to just enjoy one for a while or flip through many,
  3. UVic, a nice Canadian university:)
  4. I got 8 right, surprised even myself.!
  5. Wasnt sure where else to put this.. http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2009/apr/...-history?page=2
  6. I sure hope this link stays active for while.. This is hilarious. http://news.scotsman.com/opinion/Robert-Mc...k-of.5187620.jp
  7. I tend to read a couple of non fiction books in tandem. right now I am still reading Cottrell's book on Rome and a book on Ukrainian history. The book on Ukrainian history is very good. I just got 'Working IX to V' by Vicki Leon. Very much in tone and style as 'Uppity Women of Ancient Times' One day (I always promise myself this), I will finish non fiction books as fast as I do fiction ones. Not drag it over months like I usually do. For fiction, I am reading Susanna Gregory's 3rd book in the Thomas Chaloner adventure series in Restoration London. S. Gregory has 2 series that I know of. The first one is the matthew Bartholomew series (about 1200's?? ). I enjoy her books, the history is very accurate and the murder mysteries quite intriguing.
  8. the Flames... really which team has the most Neanderthals??
  9. Except for the Macarena, I didnt think music(????) like that existed..... lol the Ketchup Song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFzyYYZsxGc...feature=related One thing, both the Macarena and the Ketchup Song are excellent exercise.
  10. Rome's Greatest Defeat: Massacre in the Teutoburg Forest Question: as there is not much difference in price between the paperback and hardcover of this book at Chapters-Indigo, is it worthy of a hardcover. For some illogical reason, I prefer my history books in hardcover if I can afford it.
  11. Most of these offer classical studies rather than just Roman studies. University of Waterloo, Waterloo http://www.classics.uwaterloo.ca/index.htm (offers distance education too) UBC, Vancouver http://cnrs.arts.ubc.ca/index.php?id=3476 University of Calgary, Calgary http://grst.ucalgary.ca/home/degree-programs University of Victoria, Victoria http://web.uvic.ca/grs/web_pages/index.php

  15. I'm not saying that a student who only shows interest in building an engine (for example) shouldn't also be taught to read as a matter of course, but not caring about the tyrannical regimes in Africa is not necessarily a sign of laziness. Is it tryannical regimes or humanity? At work, people dont seem to realize that there is a huge world out there and because of improved transportation, communication etc, what is happening in Darfur, Iran, Iraq, India, Sri Lanka, the Balkans is not that far removed from us in reality.
  16. the reaction by the Sudanese government is appalling but totally within character and expectations
  17. nasty things have been and are going on in Darfur.. wish things would be better in the world.
  18. I, too, have finally read the 'The Silver Pigs'. I agree wholeheartedly with you Augusta even though I have an aversion to books written in first person, but I think I will make an exception for this serious. I will spread them over months. I am now reading 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield, another first person novel.
  19. Here is an interesting take on the 'real reason' Julius Caesar was assassinated. (found this article on another site) http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/35...caesar_was.html
  20. (as per Compact Oxford English Dictionary 2005 Edition) chrisma: Noun: 1 attractiveness or charm that can inspire admiration or enthusiasm in other people 2 a special gift given by God charismatic: adjective: 1 haveing a charm that can inspire admiration in other people 2 relating to a Christian movement that empasizes special gifts from God, such a healing of the sick Reading these definitions was an eye opener. When referring to a leader's chrisma or charismatic attributes in this modern world, the second definition in each case seems lacking. Therefore we are left with 'charm'. from the same dictionary Charm: noun: 1 The power or quality of delighting or fascination others. 2. a small ornament worn on a nceklaceor bracelet 3. an object, act, or saying believed to have magical power. verb: 1 delight greatly 2. use one's charm in order to influence someone Does a leader elected/appointed (whatever) because of his charisma have feet of clay.
  21. Ursus I very much enjoyed reading your article. I think I would like to learn more about Isis and Mithras. Jasminia I have book marked your thesis to read at a later time. Ursus and Jasminia is there one book you each would recommend about Isis and the Roman journey with Isis? (this site is wreaking havoc with a minuscle book budget!!!!!!)
  22. Eagle in the Snow by Wallace Breem I wonder how much of Breem is in this book. It is a good read but I find it difficult to read. The mood, colour, tone are all in shades of grey, a dull grey. Any red of the empire has been streaked with grey. The death of an idea, an age.
  23. It was Sertorius. Next time I promise look and read before posting here. (In The Name of Rome - Adrian Goldsworthy)
  24. Who was that general in Spain? I can almost see his name. Marcellus????? Help! The above quote seems to apply to him. He was 'good' but politics etc did him in.
