  1. Welcome Quintus Sertorius and don't worry expertise is not an essential qualification for membership here. We all probably have something new we can learn or simply discuss further at times.
  2. That just means western Russia, I had no intention of the Empire expanding all the way to Siberia, that's utterly ridiculous! I was more concerned about heading east from Rome and finding any frozen wastes apart from the Himalayas if you veer too far south or indeed Russia if you veered a long way north
  3. As the Lacius Curtis site makes clear in early Rome there were twelve laws created which limited the imperium (power) of the consuls: For this purpose I would suggest that 'Lex XII tabularum' equates to 'Twelve Tables'.
  4. Moderation: Off-Topic postings have been removed. Please remember that we are not in the business of comparing fictional historical battles on this site.
  5. The main Antonine Wall sites seem to all be free access so probably don't fit your criteria. Possibly this should be more prominently flagged on the page rather than on the discussion to it? With a quick search the only dedicated museum in Scotland I could find was this one related to the Roman military fort at Trimontium in southern Scotland although I believe it is a only open during summer months (April to the end of October ) and is in Melrose, the nearest town, which is about a mile from the actual site of the fort.
  6. I knew there was something about it I should have recognised It's a really nice museum to visit with good views over Verona as I remember.
  7. I take it you mean sites like the Corinium Museum in Cirencester and the Tullie House Museum in Carlisle with its extensive Roman Frontier gallery which are both currently missing. BTW I am not sure that I agree with excluding larger museums as several have very important Roman collections ie the BM but also the Museum of London and on that basis you could probably also include the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. I cannot check from this PC but I suspect that some of the Scottish Heritage managed Roman sites are staffed so have entry fees and may need to be included in your list.
  8. Correct and for those who don't know it Erice is one of the more spectacular ancient city sites on Sicily siting as it does several hundred feet above the port town of Trapani even if the visible Punic period remains may not be in the same league.
  9. To return to a topic previously discussed in the Baby deaths link to Roman 'brothel' in Buckinghamshire topic last year. The BBC is a carrying a new article linked to the upcoming 'Digging for Britain' TV series which raises the possibility that with burials occuring over a 50 year period due to religious symbols also found could rather than a "brothel" suggest links to a mother goddess cult.
  10. Heading back roughly (but still off line) in the right direction from Turkey.
  11. I suspect that when Parliament reconvenes to discuss the current problems that various members of the Tory 1922 Committee may well be yelling from the back benches for a return to the good old days of reading the Riot Act From Wikipedia: Mind you they probably would also have to re-introduce the local Yoemanry out of their foxhunting buddies so they had someone to issue with swords to be used while riding down the local yokels if they failed to disperse. Either that or the police will be 'encouraged' to use their armoured vehicles a bit more ruthlessly against the crowds.
  12. When David Cameron became Prime Minister promising that he would improve on Labour's record a large part of the country didn't think it would take him less than 18 months to have large scale strikes and rioting on the streets - they were wrong More seriously I think most of our regular posting UK members live well away from the trouble spots so should be OK so far. It really depends how much longer the mobs can keep up with their organised looting especially if the police pull their fingers out and round up the relatively small number of agitators who seem to be using facebook and other tweeting media to organise the riots as cover.
  13. This location along with its neighbours has had multiple influences in its development over the last few millenia. It is not Greece although the Greeks were one of those contending for it.
  14. I find myself in a bit of a quandry with this request since as far as I can can determine from the web the management of Hadrian's Wall appears to still ultimately be under the aegis of English Heritage as they were when I last checked an English Heritage members book. Now if this is no longer the case it may be beneficial for Hadrian
  15. With luck this is a link to an area close to the site. If you scroll down the map until you are just south of where the Borrow Beck joins with the Lune and switch to 'Bird's eye' view the fort lies just to the south of the minor road which crosses east/west over the motorway and then turns south. In the field between the farm buildings and the minor road if you zoom in close you should be able to make out the fort and notably the line of the ditch defences on its western side.
  16. You should not make the mistake of believing everything that is written in the media is a precise record of what was originally said in the archaeological press notice. Check out a more official report form the University of Exeter archaeologists here
  17. With this outline you are not totally stepping out into new territory as it seems to have some similarities to other alternative history fiction which spring from similar premises several of which are listed here IIRC; Agent of Byzantium by Harry Turtledove set in an alternate 14th century with no Islam and the Germanicus trilogy by Kirk Mitchell who has the Roman troops using 'pila' AKA single shot rifles fighting off enemy forces around 'Nova Roma' are probably closest related to elements of your outline. Not being the first however doesn't necessarily mean you will not be able to write a story which will generate its own interest and may even get me back into reading SF again. EDIT - BTW I do worry slightly about this extract:
  18. As you should eb able to see from this Map at Roman-Britain.org the main Roman interest in the area were mining related but there is some evidence for other activity including a villa at Illogan. Possibly most military interest arose from the initial 'conquest' of the area after which things remained fairly peaceful.
