  1. Yes, no I actually mean Caligula, as a boy. The shows theory was that his syrian wetnurse was a master poisoner, and Caligula was already a devious little brat, so much so that he did away with his own father - crazy I know.
  2. The I CLAUDIUS series promoted the rumour that Caligula poisened Germanicus. I can't really see how Tiberius would have benefited from his death though, he relyed on the guy.
  3. Aquila - I've been looking at Legion lists, and Primigenia was the name of two legions formed by Caligula, not of any formed by Marius from what I can see. It sounds like you've read the totally misleading "Gates of Rome" series of fiction books, where this supposed legion figures heavily. The books are not historicaly accurate.
  4. And being a Caesarphile, it's a nice thought too
  5. I've heard this theory before (not the Alien one) Caesar is said to have been asked in the days leading up to the assasination what he thought was the best way to die - he replied "Suddenly" and is said to have hated the idea of a slow decline.
  6. Yeah, I've seen that documentary, disturbing stuff...collective denial.
  7. Jim, All good. It's heartening to know there are people who think the way you do. I hate to get negative though, but things I see happening in the world, the way I see people treated by large firms and governments, indeed, by fellow humans, does not lend credence to the idea that we are somehow "more enlightened". I'd like to think that we are, and when I was younger I did, but not anymore. Romans cared about wealth and social standing more than anything and for the vast majority of proffessional people I meet today, the same can be said.
  8. Was just thinking, Goodfellas is a historical film of sorts, and if I had to pick a fave, that would be it. Ray Liota giving a good pistol whipping was a moment I'll never forget.
  9. Ever played Grand Theft Auto Vice City Jimbow ? The only difference between that and a snuff film is that you are the one doing the killing, and it's simulated, but very realistic. I wonder if they were given the technology - would Romans have simulated their games ? I agree that a gameshow is nothing like gladatorial combat, but boxing certainly is, and it's way popular.
  10. Yeah, you probably rate Tom Hanks as an actual actor.
  11. Oh come now, you've seen the "Rome as Evil Empire" movies, the British Empire could hardly get off scott free now could it ? But on the topic of a lot of these movies, Troy, Alexander, Braveheart etc. I think people are just plain thick going to see them expecting to see historicly accurate pictures. They're not made for History buffs, they're made for the general population, who may (if you're lucky) know who Homer is, but probably wonder how he found the time to write all that stuff while working for Burns at the Power plant in Springfield.
  12. And I enjoyed "Wild at Heart" - the David Lynch film. Regarding King Arthur - there are bits that I like, mostly involving the guy who played Arthur. He's actually a top notch actor, If you don't believe me - see "The Croupier" he's great in it. I also just liked the scenery, and the Saxon king who was suitably nasty.
  13. There must have been Black Romans, whether they came from North Africa as freemen, or were freed after a period of slavery. I can't imagine the Romans banning free men from the legions based on skin color. I have also seen Septimus Severus refferred to as "The Black Emperor" Any truth in this you think ? Or is it just a reference to his African home ?
  14. I'll have to go with the Varus disaster. Although I don't kow a lot about Adrianople. It really depends on your definintion of disaster - lives lost ? Borders compromised ? Empire collapsed ? Emperor killed ? Standards taken ? I've decided to go with lives lost, and the psychological effect of that loss on Romans.
  15. All I know is that Mithadates killed all his relatives for the throne, and was kept in check by Marius, and then Sulla, until using the social wars of Rome as a disstraction and invading Greece. There is a great bust of him complete with lions pelt on his head in the louvre.
  16. I'd just settle for a few choice slaves........
  17. Very good point Ursus. It could kind of be two questions. Most important before Italia would have to be Italia, most important after would have to be Carthage. Spain was also important though wasn't it ? In terms of financing later wars ?
  18. Pay special attention to the numbers of Roman troops Vs the Brits, and the formation used to defeat them, it was a kick ass victory for Rome.
  19. PM, I would have thought you were an Optimate for dissapproving of Caesars march on Rome, because he had popular support, but anyway, I am a populare
  20. I have always been more interested in other times, as a matter of fact, in things outside my own exsistance in general. My parents played a role too, by encouraging my interests and taking me places I could indulge them when young. It just never stopped.
  21. The senate, the boni/optimate faction in particular. Also for what they did to the Gracchi, and their other violations of Tribunes.
  22. I think the notion that he would give up power is a matter of opinion, despite the honorific Dictator for life. But as I mentioned - not many would agree with me, I was expecting that kind of response.
