  1. So what was left of the legions was basically germans and other tribes trained in a Roman manner? Then what discouraged the Romans from joining the military?
  2. I found this on the University of Washington's website: "Historian Arther Ferrill notes that even towards the end, some of the old infantry formations were still in use. Such grouping was increasingly ineffective however, without the severe close order discipline, drill and organization of olden times. At the Battle of Chalons (circa 451 AD) Attila the Hun rallied his troops by mocking the once vaunted Roman infantry, alleging that they merely huddled under a screen of protective shields in close formation. He ordered his troops to ignore them and to attack the powerful Alans and Visigoths instead. It was a sad commentary on the force that had once dominated Europe, the Mediterrean and much of the Middle East. It is true that at Chalons, the Roman infantry contributed to the victory by seizing part of the battlefield's high ground. Nevertheless its day had already passed in favor of the mass levies of the barbarian foderates." Does that prove that there were still some poorly organized Romans on the field or was it foederati trained in Roman manner?
  3. Does anyone know anything about the Kingdom of Soissons ruled by Syagrius, last Roman enclave in Gaul?
  4. Roman cavalry mostly did flanking and scouting when they were used.
  5. Flavius Aetius was far by the greatest. He's my favorite.
  6. Saint Martin of Tours joined the Army at 15. What about this example?
  7. I've seen so many sources that give a minimum aqge for the army. Some say it was 17 and others say it was 21. Does anyone know?
  8. I wonder what the standard carriers like the Signifers, Aquilifers, and the Vexillarius looked like in the 5th century legion. Does anyone have any pictures?
  9. We all know of the famous late Roman General Flavius Aetius. I can't seem to find much on his father Flavius Gaudentius. All I know is that he was of Scythian birth and fought under Theodosius the Great against the usurper Eugenius. Does anyone know anymore on him?
  10. So I'm guessing if there were any Roman legions left there wern't many. Right?
  11. What was the 5th century Roman navy like? I know the east had a preetty powerful navy, but what about the west?
  12. What was the capital city of the Roman Empire at the fall? I's confused because of this. A book called the Last Legion said it was Rome and a book called the Sword of Attila said it was Ravenna. Does anyone know?
  13. I always thought the Gladius was used for slashing?
  14. What would happen if Alexander the Great recovered from his illness and marched west and attacked the early Roman Republic? Would the early legions (maniples) be able to stand up against the Phalanx.
  15. What about the Eastern Empire? Did they have any legions left?
  16. According to the Bay of Kiel article, it says that according to Admiral Pliny that there were Romans in Denmark? Here is the section of the article that says so. I'm confused, I don't really think that the Romans went that far North at all. Kiel and Pliny There is a tantalizing piece of possible evidence of the use of the name in antiquity. Pliny (Book IV.97) is describing the Kattegat and the large number of islands in it, the most famous being Scandinavia. Then,
  17. So when did the Roman legions fall then? Did they cease to exist in the 440s, 430s, 420s or earlier?

    Police

Of course Rome had a police force. The Urban Cohrots served as police and fireman.
  19. At the Battle of Chalons in 451, did Aetius have any Roman Legions with or were the soldiers all Foederati and Germanic mercenaries? I know that there were no legions left in 476 when the Empire fell but were there any in 451?
  20. I always get confused when I think of the Roman Army at the fall. I know that the Barbarization contributed to the fall. In 476, were there any legions left or was it all Barbarian soldiers?
