  1. But isn't it just the short sight on the part of the senate? those soldiers had no where to go after their service ended and if the senate had propose to be their benefactor they could turn them into a conservative force who supported the goverment (just like Augustus did) and neutralize the political power of their commanders. But instead they prefered the narrow intrests of the aristocrasy, even Brutus when he try to bought the loyalty of the soldiers after his assassination of Caesar, while Brutus promise them the grants of lands that they deserved he refuse to give it to them if that would hurt the current wealthy holders of the land.
  2. Hint: He defeated "Antigona"
  3. Agrippa II, his mother was named Cyprus and his sister named Drusilla and his full roman name was Marcus Julius Agrippa.
  4. Hmm...That was fast. Your turn Asclepiades.
  5. This lady is infamous for her deadly dancing skills
  6. There seem to be an inconcistence here since Vorenus claim in the second episode that his ancestors fought in battles of Zama and Magnesia. Not an inconsistency in the show, though. If I were to finish the Vorenus quote, it would be "...I'm as solid a Roman as anyone! I've fought for Rome. My father fought for Rome, as did his father and his father before him. My wife was born here on the Aventine ..." That's from memory, but I'll bet I'm pretty close. Rome occupied Cisalpine Gaul in 203 BC, the battles of Zama and Magnesia took place in 202 BC and 190 BC. I having a hard time to believe that his Gaulish ancestors held a roman citizenship at that time so they could be part of the roman army and fought in Zama, thought it's possibly about Magnesia.

  8. Bravo ASCLEPIADES your turn.
  9. Wrong, but you are right about the era in which the coin was minted.
  10. Caesarea Maritima, since I would like to live in a cosmopolitan city but stay close to home.
  11. Gaius Octavius, father of Augustus.
  12. "Now all at kings after the third Ptolemy, being corrupted by luxurious living, have administered the affairs of government badly, but worst of all the fourth, seventh, and the last, Auletes, who, apart from his general licentiousness, practised the accompaniment of choruses with the flute, and upon this he prided himself so much that he would not hesitate to celebrate contests in the royal palace, and at these contests would come forward to vie with the opposing contestants." (Strabo, Geography, XVII, 11)
  13. As I understand it their equal status as emperors were only official but in practise it's was the more popular and experience Aurelius who control the emprie while Verus was his subordinate. For example see this passage from Cassius Dio: "Marcus Antoninus, the philosopher, upon obtaining the throne at the death of Antoninus, his adoptive father, had immediately taken to share his power Lucius Verus, the son of Lucius Commodus. 2 For he was frail in body himself and devoted the greater part of his time to letters. Indeed it is reported that even when he was emperor he showed no shame or hesitation about resorting to a teacher, but became a pupil of Sextus, the Boeotian philosopher, and did not hesitate to attend the lectures of Hermogenes on rhetoric; 3 but he was most inclined to the doctrines of the Stoic school. Lucius, on the other hand, was a vigorous man of younger years and better suited for military enterprises. Therefore Marcus made him his son-in‑law by marrying him to his daughter Lucilla and sent him to conduct the war against the Parthians." (Cassius Dio, LXXI, 1)
  14. Yes, infact Nicolaus was familiar with the Augustan party and was in good relationship with them as Herod send him as his diplomat to represent him infront of Agrippa in 14 BC and in 4 BC he represent Archelaus case to Augustus when it's was disputed which one of Herod's sons should be given the majorty of his kingdom. It's likely that him biography of Augustus was meant as a propoganda to the eastern greeks poplation. Btw it's intresting to note that before he moved to Herod court in Judean Nicolaus was the teacher of Cleoptara and Marcus Antonius children.
  15. I agree with PP, Octavius as Caesar closest male relative could have expected to br named in his will.
  16. Rolled eyes from me too, I'm afraid. We are now descending into the madness of the 'Rome' producers. Well, his mother was the lover of Caesar after all and according to Plutarch Caesar thought that Brutus was his son.
