  1. In regards to the dowry, wasn't it commonplace in that culture that only the first-born daughters to marry came along with one?
  2. I had read that recent research stated the the gardens were not really "hanging", persay, but instead were grown on rooftops. I do know that their name has been also mistranslated from Greek so that instead of the proper word - "overhanging", it was translated as "hanging". So, in a way - sure - I think that they really did exist. But insomuch as them literally "hanging", probably not so much as them hanging over.
  3. Definately the Scandinavian cultures - Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland in the Viking Age and before (back to 700 BC) - for example the Svear, Goths, Jutes, Danes, and Cimbri (contrary to popular belief, the Cimbri actually originally named Jutland (Cimbrica Chersonesus), where I live - before it became known as it is today.
  4. You are truly a saint among posters. Thank you very much! Consider yourself to be the recipient of a PM filled with address information.
  5. My thoughts exactly, Flavius. Of the millions of people who lived in that area during the time in question, one family of ten with common names, buried in their family tomb, is obviously the family of Jesus of Nazareth. I'm also suspicious about the number of women buried in the tomb. Generally, marriagable women were married off almost as soon as they were able to bear children.
  6. Far and away Firefox. Staying away from unrelated browser-war topics and all - I just want to say that there is simply no good reason not to use it.
  7. Put me in the majority of votes that chose "a little bit of everything". While the personalities and military aspects are what drew me in as a lad, it's turned into a great interest in the most banal aspects of Rome. I think some of the fine literature out there has made even the most mundane things about ancient Rome come alive for me.
  8. What would you say to someone who's not in the UK - but just across the pond in Denmark? Although the set has been released here, the tariff on media is just overwhelming to make it a reasonable buy at this time.
  9. A liberal website out of Jerusalem, Israel is reporting that a documentary film to be aired this week will prove the actual burial site for Jesus Christ and his family has been found. The filmmakers, including James Cameron of Titanic fame, claim they will display the coffins of Jesus and his mother Mary at a New York news conference on Monday. The implications are clear: According the filmmakers, Jesus did not rise from the grave. In response to the announced news conference, National Clergy Council president, the Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK) said: Now this should be interesting on all accounts. While I can't see Cameron doing something like this just for attention, I'm not hopeful that this will be anything that is actually confirmed.
  10. Just who the heck am I? Am I an itinerant pervert? A post-modern anti-hero? A random demographic sampling? It’s often easier to say what I’m not, but let’s have a go at the affirmative. Everyone was a lot younger in the ’80s. Especially me. More than just a collection of dates, the 1980s were a time of discovery, innovation, tragedy and creativity. It saw the end of the Cold War and the start of MTV, a rise in unemployment and the fall of the Berlin Wall; G.I. Joe and Reaganomics, political correctness, the Walkman, the Tiananmen Square massacre and ‘Live Aid’. There were turned up collars, poofed up hair and a band of breakdancers - then later skateboarders - in every neighborhood. Neon was all the rage and Coca Cola came in 2 different flavors. In this decade a young Bripus began his assention to power. Born in the early 1970s, a few hours after midnight on a cold winter’s evening under a waning moon, I grew up a child of pop culture - just barely remembering Vietnam, singing along to Travolta in the disco craze, changing jets into robots on Christmas morning, and swinging a plastic light-up sword at hoards of invisible Stormtroopers. Little has changed since that time. Anyway, I’m in my mid-thirties as of this writing, I’m above average in height, wear glasses, keep my head shaved and sport a goatee most of the year, I have six tattoos and several scars… a couple of which I gave purposely to myself (in the dumbness of youth). I live in Denmark, and work as a teacher in the public school system. I've always been interested in all things ancient Roman, however, my interest truly kicked off last summer, when Season 1 of HBO's Rome was finally shown here in northern Europe. Since then, I've been diving into as many books as I can read in the free time that I have - and on a whim yesterday, looked to see if there was an actual decent forum to talk about my newfound passion with like-minded people. And here I am...
