  1. Indeed, I only believe in restoration to keep it from collapsing not to restore it to its original form
  2. Reg: "All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?" Brought peace? Reg: Oh, peace - shut up! There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all. Uh well one Reg: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.
  3. The choice essentially is either fix it up or watch it fall down. We should use as much 'original' material as possible, but I'd rather see these monuments continue on for future generations, than lose them completely.
  4. 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius is widely available in many translations
  5. Just the legionary count alone is difficult enough to determine, and this is with known legionary numbers. Whether it was 28 or 30 active legions, the full compliment of men would've equalled some 150,000 men. Of course legions were rarely if ever at full strength, but all we can really go on is the theoretic number. Of course some of those numbers are officers and cavalry which all have different pay scales. Here's some info to get started though...
  6. Not just the fashion of the time, but much depended on cost and availability as well. There is the misconception that Segmentata was the only armor used in the imperial period, or that there was complete uniformity throughout the legions. In the east, Mail and Scale were still widely used. Auxilia, of course, could be equipped according to their cultural identity, and also by time period. Roman armament was much less uniform than is generally depicted.
  7. I've seen her book advertised quite a bit, and have thought about doing a review for it. I've just been hesitant due to the 'time-travel' aspect and (knowing myself) assume that I won't like it. I know that's closed minded, but I can't help myself.
  8. Thanks, TMP, but no thanks. Feel free to start a new thread on the Chinese forum, and some of the people here may join you there, but its played itself out here.
  9. Alright, alright... I guess it's run its course... besides its getting hard to figure out whom is quoting whom.
  10. No, its still a dream. My wife and I are just waiting for the kids to get a bit older before we do a whirlwind tour of Europe.
  11. Unfortunately, the Romans didn't make a great deal of progess into the Great Lakes
  12. Yeah we just sort of put all media in the same general area... if it gets busier... we'll do another reorganization I think.
  13. Well HBO doesnt let PBS air its other shows, so I doubt it (at least I dont think they do). Best bet is probably to get it on DVD after the first season?
  14. He was a traitor. According the Caiphas and the Jewish religious authority he claimed to be King of the Jews. A wise strategy pursued by these men to force Pilate's hand. By using this claim, Jesus was definately in direct conflict with Roman imperial authority, and by law, he was a traitor.
  15. No worries mate... it is an interesting discussion, just dont want it to get so far out of hand that it loses that.
  16. We discussed it a bit back here, but feel free to contuinue.
  17. They are basically the standard press release stuff available anywhere, but once the show is out I will do some more detailed reviews of actual episodes... if they are worth watching that is.
  18. Greaves were also added thanks to those nasty Dacians.
  19. Language filter Lets not make this so personal. I'm not sure I understand arguing about unscientific possibilities over who was better? As neither side can 'prove' its superiority, I find the whole topic a bit moot, but if people like to speculate thats fine. If it continues on this path, however, the thread will be locked.
  20. Welcome Jasper, A naval expert is a welcome addition around here. Your name sounds familiar from RAT?
  21. The Romans used steel. One famous variety was Noric Steel
  22. Actually thinking back.. most of the game is fictional, lol.
  23. Indeed, but the nazis were not the victors... so by my methodology they shouldn't keep the 'spoils'. So all is right in that case.
