  1. Remember the Romans and other anciet peoples didn't have the benefit of mechnised labor, so almost all textile and food preparation was done inhome as a cottage industry, unless you lived near a populous town that had manufaturing businesses which employed slaves. See women kept the home running.
  2. A state shouldn't get into torture for torture's sake, if you're wringing out an enemy for intelligence, well that is different.
  3. I kind of doubt that, the Celts if anything were practical, and a served head doesn't have good balistics, plus served heads were precious to them.
  4. The death penalty is not a warning measure but a state's self-defense. Think about it a killer is locked up, not really a big deal to him, 3 meals a day and cable at tax payer's expense, certainly you cannot release him into general populace. The death penalty is a sure measure to ridding a threat to other members of a society As to rape, rape is not about sex or horniness, it is about the execution of power over a weaker person (even 'date' rape to a limited degree), that is why gang members will hold gang rapes and why prisoners rape each other.
  5. Here are the basics: 21 year old college student in Classics (classical languages track), did Muay Thai, now does fencing, smokes too much, and drinks once a week.
  6. Also by keeping the head they thought they kept part of the person with them, like if a great warrior was felled they would keep the head because it was thought to contain their power, that is why some would set them up at a town's entrance.
  7. Makes sense given the nature of most mountain folk, fierce and independent. Probably do to a lifestyle filled with relative isolation, self relience, and close knit family ties as opposed to the relatively more relaxed living of plains and cities.
  8. Now I am not sure about how accurate my recolections are but here I go: 1) To sign with the Legion I think a citizen would go to the nearest post and see the commanding officer. 2) Initial training and evaluation would be about a year long called a probatio. The length varied depending on what sort of unit the man would be joining. 3) I think postings would be up to the CO depending on the man's performance. 4) In the empire, equiment was provided by and large to ensure uniformity. Before Marius however I think men payed for their arms. 5) They marched.
  9. I voted for Marius because his reforms made the Roman army a more professional force. Alot of people will just look at the combative side of a general, but they tend to forget being a general means being a good administrator and inovator.
  10. Dogs in combat have proved to be reliable, more so than a lot of soldiers, if trained properly and handled by one person. During Vietnam the VC were sacred more of the "devil dogs" of the army than the of the soldiers, recently Soldier of Fortune had an article on Marine combal dogs and the only proplem the leather necks have had with the dogs is they tend to get sick in the extreme heat. Think of it like this: if modern war dogs can handle the confusion of a modern battle field (with loud explosions that hurt their ears more than ours) a dog could handle the confusion of an ancient battle field.
  11. One of the major factors was the heat and lack of water, not to mention the surrounding vegitation was burned down making things worse.
  12. I don't think there were blacks in the Roman legian of any significant number, most of the areas conquered by Rome just didn't have any, except Egypt. How many legionares were pulled from Eygpt?
  13. I though he was from a prominent Catalonia family, and during his lifetime he was never refered to as anythng but Colombu. In fact contemporary sourses stated that he was not the first admiral in his family, and part of the idenity crisis was because he needed to hide because he had fought against the spainish. And also the fact that he had red hair fits in with catalonian physiology.
  14. Troy was nothing but a show piece for Pitt's abs. C'mon at the end there how the hell did Paris not know who Aeneas was, Aeneas was a prince of Troy! That movie was crap crap more suited to the gnere of the Scorpian King than an epic, crap they might as well have added Arnold as Zeus!
  15. For all intesive purposes, yes. Now take Bush and imagine him with Laural Wreath about his head, pretty convincing.
  16. I actually like the early Republic period.
  17. The Greeks and Romans for the most part looked askance at their gods (as far as being moral), their relationship was quid pro quo. Most people had their household gods who were seen as more personal and protective, and then the local gods as guardians. During the Empire the Caesar became for all practical purposes The god who was to be given homage all others became secondary. Later the developement of the Mystery cults provided many people with the promise of a personal relationship, and salvation.
  18. The Byzantine Empire was a continuing development of the eastern half of the Roman empire hence as time went on they developed differnetly from the western half which basically was taken by the Germanic tribesmen. The Eastern half still felt it had a clain to Italy and the West. If the West hadn't fallen who knows what direction it would have taken? The main rift between Byzantium and the Pope was the problem of Caesero-Papism, the Pope didn't want temporal rulers thinking they could tell the Church what to do. Whereas in the East the Emperor had the patriarchs working as his lacklies.
  19. The only problem with Romulus is his name, it means "little Roman." One theory is the story of Romulus and Remus was about to groups on the Tiber who fought, one of which was defeated, and finally assimilated. As far as the Aenied goes , what evidence is there to show proto-Roman or Latin settlement to the north indicating a migration from northern europe?
  20. Most professional armies take awhile to grind down an enemy, especially if the enemy is somewhat professional. The only time you will have lightning wins if the enemy is: a lower caliber, vastly out numbered, or poorly supplied.
  21. I like the military dress of the Republic as opposed to the latter empire. Especially around the time of the First and Second Punic Wars.
  22. The Helvetii were a Germanic tribe.
  23. So I am a Basqueman, and my ancestors served in the Roman Army! Plus a bow is no match for a balista, muhahaha! And we can class the Celts because they had a generally uniform culture, religion, and language.

    Herodotus

It is a good book covering the rise and fall of the Persian Empire as well as how all the cultures of the eastern Mediterranean interacted. It gives good insight into how the ancient Greeks viewed their world and the position it held. The book is kinda long winded (like on anecdote leading to another) but worth the time. I recomend the Walter Blanco translation, it's a Norton Critical Edition, don't bother with ordering it from amazon, just go to the local B&N and ask if they can get it (btw if your a club member you get 10% off everything!) BONA FORTUNA!
