It's not unusual for Roman coins to be in circulation for a long time, even a century or two. Five might be stretching it though. I think a merchant would recognize it as Republican (or ancient), if only because they generally contain more silver than current coins.

As I was always taught it would be "pee-loose pre-moose". -
I don't care for the politics or accessbility, objects derive part of their value from the place they came from and should be kept in their historical context as much as possible. The Elgin marbles should be in the Acropolis Museum, Agamemnon's mask should leave Athens for Mycenae. The horses of St. Mark's can stay in Venice, because they are part of Venetian identity much more than they (likely) were in Constantinople. It's not perfect by any means, but the political sensitivities of today (either way) don't make much sense to me either.

Are those places (Garda, Peschiera) interesting to visit, or is it more about the scenery? I wouldn't mind a bit of sailing to end the day, but two more places to explore might be overdoing it.

Yes, yes it is. I'm heavily in doubt between my Lombardy trip plans and returning to Sicily and finish up the north shore. Thanks for the map, a ferry trip or two looks quite appealing.

Did you visit Desenzano and Sirmione on the same day? I'm planning a trip and thinking it might be doable (using public transport from Milan, takes about 1.5 hrs to get to the train station at Desenzano). Any suggestions? I'm thinking the villa and duomo in Desenzano and the castle, villa and the two main churches in Sirmione should cover the basics.

Panta Rhei. Everyone knows nothing lasts forever, but they usually don't imagine they'll live to see the end, and act accordingly. Much like we do, actually. I don't really believe any society ever learned anything from history, not consciously at least. -

Well maybe just in archaeological circles then. The Belgian archaeologists I've met were always complaining about Sagalassos getting all the limelight. Except for the achaeologists working at Sagalassos of course. Anyway, here's the next picture, shouldn't be too hard.

You being Belgian, to be honest. I don't know much about the site, apart from it being a kind of Belgian national treasure, and the terrain looked about right. I'll need a few hours to come up with a decent one, it's been a while.
