  1. Yes, it is. Although I believe the local buses get you closer to the villas (I took one from Torre A. iirc), but I might be mistaken. Either way, it's still a long healthy uphill walk
  2. I remember when being publicly drunk in Italy was really socially unacceptable, and it wasn't that long ago. Things seem to have changed, almost imperceptably so. And now, with bar patrons and waiters going along with it and even encouraging it, it's becoming a bit sad.
  3. Methinks a hint would be appropriate at this point
  4. I hope they know what they're getting themselves into. Villa San Marco and Villa Adriana are both absolutely stunning, and the best part is that there aren't any tourists around. None. So if you happen to be in the neighbourhood, now would be a good time to visit.
  5. Still too difficult, is it?
  6. thanks, but not quite back yet. just leeching off an unprotected wireless network at Kiev airport with my mobile phone. needless to say i won't try to upload a picture this way. i'll be back soon though...
  7. Is it Lucca? If it is, someone else can take over, I won't be online until Sunday.
  8. Just dropping by to see you're doing a good job with my thread. Keep it up until I get back from Ukraine in about four weeks.
  9. I think a clue is in order here.
  10. Only if the first didn't confirm to the rules
  11. I'm usually not inclined to answer general questions in this thread, but it's kind of hard to argue with the minaret anyway . So yes, it's the Eastern empire.
  12. That's actually quite interesting. Would they have been judged by posterity in the same way as the Greeks themselves were, when they united to fight the Persians? They were both fighting for their independence against the huge armies of an eastern monarchy. Somehow I doubt it.
  13. I won't be able to for the next 4 hours or so. If anyone is aching to get a shot, and you know you are, this is your chance.
  14. Caldrail, claim your victory
  15. July 8, 2008-- give or take a day. It's a long way off. Yes it is. I probably won't make it that early in July, so I'll just wish you a good trip!
  16. It's a Monty Python sketch, where four middle-aged men try to outdo each other in the "We had it tough, back in the day"-department.
  17. My apologies if you were offended, it was unintentional. My post was typed in a hurry, and perhaps poorly worded. I will admit that the idea of resurrecting a dead religion mystifies me, but I would certainly not judge people who decide to do so. I was genuinely wondering how serious people were when they selected that particular option. I guess the same applies to the other choices: someone selecting Christian may be practising it, or merely belong to it by baptism and otherwise living a non-religious life, etcetera. So, to rephrase, I wonder how many of those votes were made by people who were perhaps a bit carried away by their enthusiasm for all things Roman, and do not seriously consider themselves to practice traditional Roman religion, and how many are serious about it. If the latter, I'd love to know some details of their religious pratice. edit: spelling
