  1. You should be careful. I've heard that lateral vents can be catastrophic.
  2. That's terrible! LOL, the pun wasn't intended. Must have been subliminally influenced... Just sparked off, did it? Anyway, gotta lava good volcano picture.
  3. Archaeology is a primary source, too. It yields information that must be interpreted, just like the historical sources. In good scientific tradition, these interpretations change over time as new data is gathered and new theoretical frameworks are constructed. Mommsen simply did not have access to the past century of research. But with those limitations in mind, his work can still be useful.
  4. Actually, they've been moving away from that with the new engine. Both EU3 and EU:Rome don't have anything resembling the complexity of, say, Victoria. Too bad imo, and Rome will be the first Paradox game I'm not buying.
  5. Constantinople was founded on 4 November 326, so that part makes sense. The other bits (florii or Avithusa) don't ring any bells I'm afraid.
  6. I've never seen a comprehensive list or anything of the sort. Most of the spolia cannot be securely attributed anyway, so that would make it hard to compile one. Still I suppose an attempt do so so would have value. There's a book called Spolia by Lucilla de Lachenal which is quite good. It's more focused on the pratice of spoliation itself but includes lots of examples. You'll need to learn Italian, though.
  7. Thanks all. I would not dare to intrude upon the great PP's birthday. I'm content to be one day ahead
  8. It seems a bit odd, but maybe there's nothing more to it. On the other hand I was told yesterday that it fascist connotations, but that could be just a story.
  9. Perhaps due to the 1994 de-institutionalization of patients from psychiatric hospitals? But seriously, it's not even his tomb. And there are no flowers at Augustus' or Hadrian's mausoleum.
  10. One thing that always strikes me is that people keep laying flowers on the altar, and not just around this time of the year. Does anyone know if there's a particular reason for it?
  11. I can imagine why Swedish neutrality is respected so much. Who knows what would happen if they get excited about things.
  12. I thought the free entrance to the forum was one of the last things sacred in Rome... Like you, I used to go there all the time as well, and was planning to do so again when I return to Rome in a few weeks.
  13. I thought he died at Misenum. Judging by the bits I've seen, there's nothing at all in the way of historical accuracy in this movie. Not necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but since it didn't seem to offer anything else in return, I couldn't be bothered to watch more of it.
  14. Note that as a student you can apply for a bit of cash to help you cover travel expenses.
  15. www.trac2008.nl I'll get back to you on the other thing later.
  16. Don't miss the big Roman archaeology congress in Amsterdam in April, one of the sections is specifically devoted to water. Also, I might be able get you in touch with people doing water-related research in Ostia and Pompeii. PM me if you're interested.
